While yesterday's farce was obviously about far more than one decision that free kick payed by Stevic to Cameron against Batch before the ball was bounced at the start of the 2nd quarter was one of the most disgraceful decisions I've ever seen in 25 years of watching footy.

I found it disturbing on so many levels. While it was an insane decision and only a complete idiot would say otherwise myself and some mates were discussing it after the game and the more you analyse it the scarier it is. What could he have possibly payed it for? It wasn't in the back, it wasn't high contact, it wasn't front on contact, it wasn't chopping the arms and he wasn't holding him. Quite apart from the fact that it was ridiculously soft and a joke there's actually no rule in Australian football that could possibly justify making such a decision.

I'm assuming Stevic asked Batch to stop it once or twice before he actually payed the free kick which is very concerning in the first place as he has absolutely no right to. Then when Batch ignores him (as he should) he pays a free against him. Basically we're talking about a guy with absolutely no regard for the rules of footy saying "Do what I'd like you to do and play exactly the way I'd like you to play in a perfect world because I'm the guy with the whistle and if you don't I'll penalise you even if you're not breaking any rules." If that's not a worry I don't know what is.

Matthew Stevic should seriously be suspended for that. I was at the game yesterday and if I saw him in a bar afterwards or at the airport on the way back to Melbourne I'd have absolutely no hesitation in walking up to him point blank and telling him he's a *smile*ing idiot. Not sure when that will change...if ever.

great post

Pretty tough gig being an umpire, especially with all the rule changes.Soon they're be no umpires left, why would you bother umpiring with all the crap they have to put up with?

Was amazed watching the game when Newy got a free kick for a push in the back as he was kicking the ball. I think that's the first time I've seen it paid all year to any team. I thought that I must have missed a rule change.

I would have to listen to the replay audio again Westie but the umpire actually stated what the free kick was for when he paid it. I will get the IQ going later and check it out.
Couldn't quite make out the first word he said but the Umpire said it was either prohibited or Prohibitive Contact.

Have to agree. Will end up with the captains deciding on who should get a free kick. Now thats got a retro feel about it.

Six-figure salary for part time work which bestows dominion over blokes who'd normally kick sand in your face...would be appealing to certain personality types.

As expected Giesch defends his boys.

Couldnt be bothered reading that claptrap from that idiot.

Did he come out with this classic from the Richmond days to defend his maggots:

"Oh look it wasnt a great performance by our boys but they managed to salvage something from the wreak" ::)

Read the article and as expected didn't address the issue thats caused the problem with the Carlton players. What the Afl puppet (to whom I have no respect for in that position) does imo, is that he talks in a deflective manner to avoid the matter at hand. Pats the ump on the back and has a get over attitude it towards people/media as the umps are doing a fantastic job with just a couple of errors.

Agree shocking. I note they didn't show the Luke Power non decision.

your longest post ever? :p

but i have 2 obvious solutions to help the umpires:
1. make them fully professional.
2. take brownlow medal voting off them.

3. De-mike them
4. Get rid of all the showmanship and posturing that they're trained to do so they can concentrate on the footy
5. Stop giving them the 'rule of the week'.

9. Ditch using player nicknames.

Agree. During rugby union internationals refs call players by their numbers, or "captains" when he wants a word to a captain.

Works well.
