TV for Overseas PREers

Probably best people begin looking for alternatives to Australia Network if they are keen on watching the finals. Footy will officially be banished from the schedule as of August 31 and will not return when the rights are eventually settled. The reasons according to the government relate to football (and sport in general) not fitting into their notion of appropriate content for their target market, those bidding for the licence have also been advised of the new mandate. I'm aware of some people who have written directly to Kevin Rudd but it would appear the decision is set in stone, the AFL is yet to clarify what will happen with future overseas broadcasts.

that doesn't sound good , going back to the US in August and was hoping to see some footy on some cable station while im there

Spoke to a bloke in the industry today. He's fairly certain Setanta will pick it up if Rudd insists the Australia Network shouldn't carry sport.

May not have as many live but should have a fair bit.

My understanding is that it's Kevin Rudd's decision. In true form he's micro managing everything in his department.

Was in Vietnam recently and on the occasions I viewed AN it was all nature docs and b-grade news panel programs. I was delighted when Tigers v Dons came on and the footy marathon next day. Presumably change in remit allows further opportunities to watch Kangaroos lolling about or Stan Grant rejects pontificating on Australia’s latest anti-nuclear proliferation initiative with fellow global heavyweights the Switzerland and Slovenia. How could the Asian market not want more of that.

Hope you have access to a computer there Pete ............ 3 games a week on ESPN 3 (all FREE) is about all you'll find over here mate.

ESPN 2 does show a game a week LIVE, starting with the Dreamtime at the G game, then whatever are the games of the week I guess for the following 3 weeks, then they just disappear till the Grand Final rolls around at season's end.....very weird setup these days as to why they do what they do, not even ESPN programmers know as I've spoke to them on a few occasions as to why they just show it over 4 weeks and not the entire season ....they have no idea themselves.

There are "other" alternatives ofcourse, but most of those are usually a "pay to view" (and some very late nights or early mornings depending on your whereabouts) which after reading some of the posts above may change too as they are all fed from that Australia Network that Im aware.......

But hey....... you always have the good 'ol AFL website and radio broadcasts if all else fails !!! :hihi

As I posted elsewhere on this thread, nothing is set in stone. They did this about 8 or 9 years ago when I was living in Bangkok and it changed from ABC Asia Pacific to the Australia Network. They substantially reduced football and all sports quoting the Governments Mantra about promoting Australia to a Foreign audience etc, and how it was not there for Expat Australian living abroad.

Well that Mantra last for about a year, until they all realised that without the Expat Audience the station would go under as no one watched it. I forget the official figures, which a mate of mine at DFAT was privvy to, but the drop was huge.

Guess what sport and football came back bigger than ever.

I also understand that they copped a lot of flack via email etc from Expats living abroad, me included, surprisingly.

So I suggest everyone start emailing them now. Just to give them a taste of the backlash, they will change again, but the sooner we start bombarding them the sooner they will realise their mistakes.

It just goes to prove one thing, Governments never learn from their mistakes.

I heard Rudd himself decreed that the Australian Network shouldn't show sports. I can believe that.
I also heard he gets the weekly tv schedule on his desk every week to review it. That I'm not too sure about.

Odd though, they want the audience to be foreigners who would enjoy watching shows about Australia. Why then do they have International News and Foreign Correspondent on ?

I just emailed them requesting re-runs of Home & Away 24/7. :hihi

Packed to the Rafters is the headline show this year.

Yeah, we definitely need some more Home & Away, followed by some more reality TV involving random individuals desperate to show how important they are to life on earth.

Good call Gus, do you have the email address by any chance?

Has anyone tried AFLLIVE.TV? Mac compatible, and I have to travel o/s for a month.

BF reviews are OK.

NYT - I use lineafl.tv (on a Mac) for the Tigers games that aren't on ESPN in the UK. Its pretty good and seems to be an upgrade on Omnisport which I used last year. Some weeks the quality seems better than others, but that is probably to do the quality of my connection (I'm not a tech head so please excuse the simplicity of that statement :help).

Overall its better than not seeing the game at all.

Enjoy your trip.

After delivering at the start of the season they are now reverting back to form. Replay on AFL TV has not been up for days. Sydney replay is still not working properly?

It's been ok for the live action though.
