Haven't been to Derby Day since Stylish Century won in 1989. It was so crowded that people were hanging out of the carriages, literally. Think the crowd was only 50K.
Shows how long our trains have been 3rd world style. People stuck in carriages all locked up like sardines with some vomiting and passing out.

In my experience, we're getting worse and worse in this city and this new tunnel (due for, uhmm....probably 2045) won't fix anything.

Crowd was 85k, almost as many as our home games average for next year! In fairness to VRC they are limited with the new stand being built so have reduced space available. Was really crowded in most Members areas.

Public Transport - now that is a different discussion. I was lucky we left not long after the last and had a decent run but friends who left a little later took ages. How hard can it be?

Ah, I meant the crowd in '89.

Went to Oaks Day several times in the 90's and 00's. Difficult to move around and get a bet on, even in the lesser-known areas of the track. Was in the members' for the Cup in 2012, 100K... not as bad. I guess that's one of the things they pay for.

I was stuck on that train. Mrs BH almost fainted. After 20 minutes on the platform we took off only to stop a few hundred metres up the track outside the Nursery. At least on the platform we could have the doors open. They shouldn't have left the platform given the situation. It took two hours to reach Flinders St from the time we boarded.

Hard to split this Cup but my top 4 are Marmelo, Wall of Fire, Johannes Vermeer and Almandin (on trust). Rekindling is the X factor. Tiberian the well credentialled longshot (beat the Breeders Turf champ twice at the start of its last prep.)

Along with so many other issues, I just can't work out what logic these idiots use.

My Big 5 for the Cup: Red Cardinal, Max Dynamite, Big Duke, Tiberian and Wall of Fire. My X-factor is Cismontaine. Marmelo's a red herring.... ;D

Ive switched onto Red Cardinal too TF, so its safe to back Marmelo now. ;D

I get the impression they haven't been happy with Red Cardinal at Werribee. Trainer would have liked to have given it a race but didn't. well beaten by Marmelo last start.

Told you Marmelo's a hoax. ;D

Well done on Rekindling TBH. (Michael Gudinski will be happy)

Herald Sun Curse Strikes Again.

The horse that is featured with the model on the front of the Herald Sun on Cup Day rarely if ever wins.

Marmelo on the cover today and as a result no soup for Marmelo.

Spewin was too lazy to go to the tab and was gonna put a pineapple or two down on Rekindling just because it was Lloyd Williams horse.

Annnnnd it wins FML :yellowno

I wonder if Lloyd sends the handicapper a little hamper on the first wednesday in November?

Good to see a battler win the cup

Yeh, hard to get enthusiastic about a guy that loses millions of dollars to sate his ego. I suppose he provides jobs for a number of people and he loves the history of the cup. You could argue anyone with the funds could do what he does so he obviously is very astute in both selection of the horse and mapping out its preparation.

Big day for Roycey. Chris Symons came through very nicely twice. Couple of other winners and nice trifecta to start the day. Only got second in the cup or it would have been a near record... Odds of returning it all back next week. 100-1 on.

If it ain't Lloyd it'll be someone else. 18/23 northern hemisphere-breds in the field, with the five locals (AUS/NZ) all finishing in the back half.

Opening the race up to the internationals hasn't been all positive.

I don't begrudge Lloyd. It's his passion, he targets just the one race and trains his horses throughout the year with just the one race in mind. Would have been handy on the Tigers board all those years ago.

I don't begrudge him spending his cash anyway he likes. How he made his millions is another matter.

At least with Rekindling, unlike his past two winners, he bought it as a yearling.

He is the best in the business at the caper. Go ask OTI racing. Donuts after nearly 20 years of trying.
