A horse? You may not value the life of an animal, and may not be fussed that horses have died for people's entertainment but to dismiss those that do as the loony left is pretty stupid.

The footage posted on ABC was distressing for anyone with a shred of humanity. Unfortunately the extremely tough sport of racing is occasionally visited by tragedy.

My issue with the naysayers is that the large majority pay scant attention to the sport for 364 days of the year, but would gladly tear down a mighty industry on a whim. Fortunately, though they may be humoured for a little while in the current loony climate, they will go away and forget about it until next year.

Loons.

If the death of a horse is a tragedy what the deaths of the hundreds of horses killed every year due to the racing industry? Collateral damage?

The reason there are few protests thru the year about racing is because for the majority of the year very few people actually care about it. As you say the.majority will go away and forget about it.

Once again dismissing.people with a conscience as loons is just stupid.
Allowing horses to die so people can have a bet can surely be considered as immoral by someone who is not a loon?

Fair enough. Their concerns are mostly ill-informed, then.

I enjoy the spectacle of a day at the races but at times I think it's a silly sport built on the back of an insidious gambling industry.

Throw in the occasional jockey / horse death and it seems less attractive.

A public holiday for a horse race makes no sense. None. But it's part of what has made this country what it is.

Everyone's obviously welcome to their own perspectives and to withdraw their custom and go to work or do whatever while the Cup is on. But please, don't interfere with the livelihoods/dreams/enjoyment of others.

My laughter is how they (Kennett?) gets rid of the traditional Show Day in September but keeps a horse race day as public holiday when even most in the financial services industry have to work!

I don't the all the ramifications but IMO the race should be on the Monday, I don't know if data is kept but it's my guess absenteeism from the workplace is MASSIVE on the Monday and getting bigger. Seems more and more schools are using the day as a shutdown too to create the long long weekend.

Yep. My sisters had to take the day off on Monday as their kids were given a day off.
(We never got this back in our day!! :hihi)

Good call. My sons school had a 'Curriculum Day' which means a parent needs to take the Monday off to cover them. Effectively 2 days off because of the 'Tuesday' tradition.
Crazy stuff.

That's been going on since I was at school.

With the local schools here parents were told that teachers would be in attendance on Monday but no formal classes would be held due to traditionally low attendance.

Are you suggesting Araldo died because of a lack of care? Will wait for the autopsy results to be completed on AR.

no i am not suggesting the horse died because of a lack of care.
some horses die from horse racing. that is a fact.
many many more horses are killed because they dont make it as a racing horse. that is another fact.
