Horse racing Is there a more boring sport on the planet?

Rather eat my own poo.

Prawn sandwich sport.

SEN will make my brain melt with all the horse racing poo.
Love the animal,hate the sport.

Counting the milliseconds for Richmonds season.Miss it already. :'(

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Don't get how horse racing can be so reverred?
Up there with snail racing and croquet.

I love the animal though.

Magnificent beasts.

But the sport is all about the moolah.

I can smell the prawns in here. :hihi

P.S I did play in a cover band at a Melbourne Cup after party gig on the main lawn.A Sth African "blind as" bird who lost one of her shoes wanted to take me home.Still regret that day LMAO. ;D I said no.And I was single at the time. And she was hot.Poopoos.

this isn't necessarily a pro-racing thread. there's been plenty of negative discussion too.. jumping races and the use of whips are a couple of topics that come to mind.

Most race horse people deny it, but it's pretty hard to be sincerely pro horse welfare and pro racing. Just ask the people who have to cope with the behavioural (stereotypies) and physical problems (ulcers) re-training race horses to be riding hacks.

:peep

fair enough. But plenty of pet dogs would be pretty peckish without slow racehorses.

A lot of people confuse ethics and welfare. Killing horses for pet food is an ethical issue. The poor treatment of racehorses when alive is a welfare issue.

true. Ive got no problem with eating a slow horse, but dont want to see any animal mistreated. Glen Boss seriously mistreated some of my $ the other day.

Backed Fawkner in the Turnbull. Run didn't exactly scream "be on me next time over more ground", yet everything coming from the stable pointed to it being a stone cold certainty. A mug's game, indeed.

There was a big anomaly in that race, L2. And a very good reason for it. Nick Hall went miles too soon. Nick Hall doesn't go to early - he has ice in his veins. The horse was given a very hard run because that's what he was there for. It was around the time of the Turnbull that the money came for Fawkner in the CC. Stable money. 80/1 to 12/1.

FWIW Fawkner reminded me, going into the CC, of two other horses - Silver Bounty and Cole Diesel. Milers perfectly suited in the CC. As Bart said, so many years ago "You need a good miler to win the Caulfield Cup". A lot of the winners couldn't run a mile and a half with a head start.

Now to Veandercross. Shane Dye slaughtered Veandercross because that jockey is field shy and often panicked when racing back in a field. Shane Dye sleeps with the lights on. There is no need for any other explanation of the carnage that day. Matter closed IMO.

Damien Oliver is a genius in a field. Yet his ride on Jetaway was comparable to Dye's. No way Oliver was paid off to butcher the horse. He did it for free. But even Hayes must have entertained the idea that it was NQR. He said something like "I've never seen a horse asked to do so much in a race like the Caulfield Cup". I have to go to Veandercross to find one. And Oliver's ride is still a mystery to me.

Jetaway is a very interesting MC runner. Like so many others. A cracken Cup comin up.

In the name if fairness, horses being allowed to whip jockeys after a bad ride gets my vote.

The bloke who started this thread (bear) still works at a stable, L2. If he backs a horse and it gets done he hits the jockey with his own shillelagh. Not as often as we'd like because jockeys are fast runners.
