I'm waiting for the Cox plate, I'm on Fiorente at $18.

I didn't get the chocolates but I what a huge run. He started from the outside barrier and went forward, he was 4 wide for a while, and then 3 wide and then went up and sat outside the leader. To finish third less than 1/2 a length from the winner is a fantastic effort.
I have no doubt if he drew a good barrier he wins.
Apart from getting $18 on fixed odds, I also had Toydini all up Fiorente, damn!!!!
I'll be on him again in the Cup.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

When he wins you can join Gai Living the Dream with your winnings !!! :)

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

For anyone trying to find video of the overseas runners in the Cup, there's a few around on youtube (even better if you understand French and German racecallers), but for video of all English races go to racinguk.com. You may need to register but it's free and searchable by date and meeting.

It helped me get the trifecta 2 years ago.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

When will the VRC realise that the world doesn't give two hoots about the Melbourne Cup? Cap the internationals for ef-sake. If rich Australians want to go and buy quality horses from Europe and bring them here, all good. At least there is some local connection. But as soon as next year, the Cup won't have a locally-bred runner.

The Melbourne Cup is all about good local stories - Subzero, Rogan Josh, the Diva. Who gives a stuff about horses like Dunaden, Delta Blues and Americain? The winners just run off with their loot. At least the likes Lloyd, OTI and Moroney give something back to the local industry.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

It's increasingly a global sport Scotty. The Europeans travel to Dubai and Kentucky and increasingly here. Side Glance won the Mackinon after racing in the US, and Dandino has come via the US too.

And if you don't think they give two hoots, there's 30 minute English preview of the Cup on youtube that aired in September. That's right: more than a month before the race they're dedicating a whole show to both the European and Australian chances.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

For anyone that gives a hoot, I have followed my 3 rules again for the cup and narrowed the field down to 11 runners. With the field narrowed down to 11 (it's usually less than that), the board is set at approx. 60% return and once again it's normally lower than that but ill still have a go. I have narrowed the field down to 4,5,10,12,13,14,16,17,18,21 & 23.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

I only know a few names in it at the moment. Won't even bother studying the form guide.

Will go for Ibicenco cos had a good win with him and Brad in the Geelong Cup. Also Dear Demi for my mare tip. And Fawkner for the Aussie factor.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Dandino for me. Can stay, can sprint, can play smash-up-derbys if required. Not terribly confident though.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

I can't go past Fiorente. Second in this last year, slashing finishes in the lead up races this year, then caught wide for the first half of the Cox Plate, pushed forward, the 3yo with no weight kicked away yet he got to within a length again - well ahead of the other Cup runners and beating home Side Glance who then won the Mackinnon.

Dandino and Voleuse de Couers the main dangers with plenty of others to consider for the box trifecta.

Fiorente breaks my number one rule TBH that you have to win the Cup at your first crack otherwise you can't win it, if you win at you first crack you can back up and win it again, but if you don't win it, best not to try again. Only 3 horses in the last 50 odd years have done it, see if you can name them. All 3 horses got thrown in on weights the following year as well, big mistakes by the handicapper.
