Do you have a bit of a pro-Singo bias? I couldn't care less about the outcome really. I liked the drunk retort though and don't see it as the least bit two faced. It was given as a possible explanation for Singo's out of line public attack and accusations. It was a virtual character assassination that publicly questioned Gai's integrity as a person and a trainer. Sounds reasonable to me for her to question such erratic behaviour and doesn't necessarily reflect on their previous relationship. Singo's alleged sources aren't exactly providing support for his claims by their refusal to appear.

I don't know the law about reporting treatments. Gai should get a big rap over the knuckles if she didn't follow proper procedure. The horse was passed fit by vets though, including Singo's own vet. Seems to be a communication breakdown. How would Tom know the horse couldn't win if the owners vet examined the horse and didn't even see a problem? He's a bookmaker who supposedly backed the horse himself...albeit a bookmaker with a dazzling smile.

Probably a bit. But I'm a fan of Gai's also. Is obvioulsy a fantastic trainer and a very good representative for the racing industry. She promotes it in a great way and is always humble in defeat. I did lose a litle respect for her when she drew 11 for More Joyous in the Cox plate and tried to justify it and am surprised at the personal vitriol in this inquiry. very un'Gai like but probably shows she's got some real mongrel behind that smiling facade. Given how I wanted newman to show some mongrel i should be on her side I spose!

We will probably never get to the truth of what was actually said but it has severed a long and successful relationship.

She didn't follow proper reporting procedure and I'm sure she will get a big rap over the knuckles. Treatment of horses is obviously a massive issue.

Gotta love Gai saying Singo was probably drunk and that he had a reputation for drinking too much. The girl has spirit and a touch of derring do.

also asked if he is on medication. Playing pretty dirty. I dont really like either ones style. an anecdote FWIW ......

I was in sydney last year and decided to go to Randwick for trackwork predawn with my 11 year old horsey daughter. We are standing on the rails, when a bloke comes up to us, friendly as hell and chats and tells us all about the horses and stuff. I show a bit of knowledge and alot of interest and he tells us to come up the tower for a look. when we go in, theres me, my daughter, the bloke and gai waterhouse. Gai was SUPER busy, SUPER in control, SUPER DUPER no-nonsense hard in her instructions to track workers via her foreman (friendly bloke) and very generous with her conversation to me and my girl.

I left with the impression that she was not a lady I would want to mess with. :hihi

It an interesting bout this one.

Seems airbrushed. I wouldnt trust young tommy as far as i could kick him. Whats your thoughts on his self-styled ambassadorial role in gambling, sport and australian culture at present Rosy?

Haha going by your Newmo thread maybe you think Gai should have just punched Singo in the snotter. :hihi

More power to ladies not to be messed with.

Photos can be airbrushed but Tom's smile is the same on the news clips etc. What reason would their be for so many to go to the trouble? Who cares anyway?

I don't have any real thoughts on Tom. I suspect a bit of tall poppy syndrome applies. He's obviously very successful at what he does and how he markets himself and his business. It probably annoys me a bit but good on him. He's created a market that will probably live or die on support and demand. People aren't forced to bet with him. I don't see him as having any less integrity than any other betting agencies..he's just publicly in your face more. I appreciate the fact he hasn't contacted me offering $50 bets to open an account like some others have. He also hasn't tried to sign PRE to an advertising contract, and hassled me further when I've said I don't consider that appropriate for a family forum, like some others have.

I've missed his ambassadorial role for Australian culture so can't comment on that.

Actually, I think Singo would have been more justified in vomiting on Gai's shoes, scratching the horse and walking it out the front gate. Of course, being a mild mannered fella, i would never condone such behaviour.

Yeah shes a strong tough lady no doubt and I respect strong tough ladies.

Your not disappointed she blamed your boy Nash for a bad ride at the inquiry?

good on you.

what i meant by culture was I reckon he is a bit of a symbol of a very worrying ill in Australian society. As a culture weve always bet on two flies walking up a window, but the saturation advertising before kids have their jammies on friday and satdy night is disturbing. The imagery associates kids superheros with punting. Now you know i am a punter, but i can see it for what it is. Essentially a tax on the poor that will lead to misery to varying degrees more often than not. Thats not the kind of thing we should be selling to little kids.

Yep. And it's all framed as good fun.

Funnily enough, the minute you start consistently winning with these betting agencies they suspend your account and cease you betting with them.

yeah, betting online is far more insidious than walking into a TAB. You are using your credit card to punt, its a whole lot easy to deposit than withdraw, and theres a million weird novelty bets (1st behind scored in the 3rd quarter ::)) that are essentially putting a poker machine in everyones pocket.

In regard to the vomiting on Gai I don't know the details of the situation but I think Singo's public reaction was out of line. I don't know if Gai did anything wrong and/or the horse wasn't fit to run despite the vets declaring she was.

I didn't see the race so have no opinion about whether Nash had a good ride or not. I'd hope everyone would be honest at an official enquiry.

P.S. Since Nash has gone to Sydney Brad is more my money tree.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Gai calls jockey robbo 'a trumped up little fellow" and robbo fires back "shes a snob and a failed actress" :rofl

get your popcorn, this is going to be funny.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Is the hearing still going gollywog? Last i heard, on ABC radio throughout the night, 3 witnesses refused to attend and the hearing had been suspended indefinitely.

If Gai says that about the jockey I wonder what she'll say about the brothel owner.

Got all the makings of a good mini series.

I think the jockey fired his salvo through the media :hihi. I think Racing and the AFL have similar conflict resolution/crisis management styles. "Look over there" :theyareontome

Its already a mini series. TJ's girl the snobby failed actress, the brothel owner, the troubled league star, the trumped up little jockey and the abrasive ad man. David Williamson cant write stuff like this.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Singo went about it the wrong way, it made for good theatre, but he should have questioned her in private.
I don't blame him for being outraged though, after giving Gai her first horse to train and the continuous best of the best bloodstock year in and year out, he should have been told that there was a problem with More Joyous, he deserves better than that.

Edit I just read that Singo's vet and racing manager knew on the Thursday that the mare was having issues but never told him.
I think that Gai might be in a bit of strife for not advising the stewards that More Joyous was having treatment for a problem. Stewards and the punters need to know.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Its brought up a heap of issues. A mum big horse trainer and a son big bookie stinks. Singo (I'm not a fan at all, a Sydney spiv charlatan who puts on the ocker man-of-the-people routine, any friend of Alan Jones and all that), was right when he said 'does anyone believe they don't talk about horses?'

No doubt they'd talk horses but who knows if that affects the bookmaking. I'm sure other bookies know trainers well enough to discuss horses with as well. Are people suggesting relatives of trainers shouldn't be able to be bookmakers? Interesting thought. Friends talk too.

Sounds like Singo is having second thoughts about firing off publicly the way he did without checking sources and has mentioned he might owe the Waterhouse family an apology.

"If I find out that Andrew Johns, who I have a high regard for, has rung up and told me a whole lot of nonsense, and it's damaged not only Gai and myself but Tom and Robbie, I'd apologise to anyone who was hurt by it," Singleton said.

"At this stage, I think Andrew owes me an apology. He needs to front up, he needs to man up, because I've always trusted Andrew. I've known him since he was 14 years old and helped with his career on and off the field.

"If he embellished it or made up all, or some, or most of this, then he owes me an apology and I owe them (Waterhouses) an apology." Link

The funniest part of the article

"I still respect her; in fact I respect her more," Singleton said. "She proved how much love and respect she has for her son as well as Robbie. And I always knew it, but today it was on public display.

"Gai did call me a 'sham', a 'disgrace', a 'drunk' and - worst of all - three times 'old', like the horse.

"But the 'old' I can't forgive her for.

I understand it virtually impossible to regulate, but it still stinks. Its just another example of crooked dealings that can't be eradicated. The phone call from a realestate agent to a mate when he gets handed a deceased estate bargain property, a state premier who happens to be at the same bbq as the head of a corporation tendering for a casino license, super wealthy people whose stockbrokers get priority access to new company listings that look so good they are oversubscribed, etc etc.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

My take on it is

- Johns was just being a dumb genius
- Singo was pissed
- Gai was stupid
- Robbie was crooked
- Tom was conceived
- The rider was stiff
- The jockey was funny

Its a cracker of a story. A bit like the cook, the theif, the wife and his lover.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

:hihi

Look, there's no doubt More Joyous wasnt right, couldnt win, shouldnt have ran & the whispers were bang on the money. It is also likely Tom knew about this. Its mother & son after all.

This however will never be proven & the whole saga is really just lovely media fodder.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

More Joyous couldn't beat All Too Hard, fit or not. Only a mug would have backed her.
