Agree Streak but it's interesting to see Dennis Napthine emphasising that an Investigation will held into how Banna Strand was able to get to that fence "protecting" the spectators.
That incident has given him the chance to divert attention from the other 5 horses and jockeys which didnt complete the course.

I think Napthine is the local member for Warrnambool too. I wonder if he'd put more value on the local economy or the horses welfare.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

The jumps debate is a very intriguing one

on one hand we have the welfare of the horses, which is very important

on the other is the welfare of the people who derive an income from the sport

the problem is that unlike other countries where jumpers are bred here jumpers are flat track hacks who would otherwise be snet to the knackery so they are are a lot finer in the bone and don't stand up to the pressure of jumping as well (like equestrian and o/s jumpers)

it's a pity that the media sensationalise things to the nth degree these days so that discussion of the topic could be a lot more constructive and the campaigners against the sport (who I have heard talking blatant untruths) are given such a loud voice.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

I am off to the Swans v Doggies match today at Manuka ACT. Have to leave at 11.15am so as to meet friends driving over from Wagga for the game.

Bringbakflemmo can you get your tip(s) in early before 11am so I can get them on before I go to the footy.

Thanks Streak - don't see Belmont a problem - especially if Insurgency wins!

Cheers RT

Interesting post BigN. I watch a lot of the English jumping races and there are plenty of horses falling all the time and you often see the screen come out. NOt sure what the anti jumps lobby is like over there but I guess the industry is much more powerful.

Is there an argument to suggest it is more humane to keep the horses jumping or else they would be sent to the knackery at a much younger age?

Thanks Remote.

Reckon the Tigers are over the odds to give the Dockers a touch up today, so wouldn't have minded that bet either.

I think that's right, JB. These RSPC vegan types think that there's a glorious paddock waiting for all these slow horses post racing. But sadly, for most of them, there isn't.

Interesting. So the logical conclusion (assuming you have any interest at all in animal welfare) is to cancel racing altogether.

A quick, clean slaughter at a knackery is more humane than a horse writhing in agony on the track with a broken neck waiting for a screen to come out.

A few people have experessed a concern about jumps races on this thread Gypsy. Are they the ones you describe as vegans? :headscratch

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

A pretty large number of horses bred for racing never get beyond a barrier trial and end up in the knackery. So in essence they're bred entirely for no purpose other than to entertain humans with a greater than average chance of being killed without doing so. Humane?

Is that any different from other animals - chickens, cows, pigs etc?

The other side of the argument is that those who do race be it flat or jumper are treated like kings.
My father-in-law owns trotters and they have the best of everything.
All the other horse owners I have known are the same.
So an arm of the argument may be is it worth risking a fall over a jump if you live the good life or go straight to the knackery?

That's how I see it.

Good call JB.

A core of vegans are what are called abolitionists, who are against what they call the enslavement of animals against their will. They want no consumption of meat or animal byproducts, and they want to end animal enslavement, which means no more circuses, zoos, horse racing or beasts of burden.

Make no mistake, they are not just against jumps racing, but horse racing in general. My money of on them succeeding in their bid to ban jumps, and then moving to ban flats on the basis that the breeding and slaughter program that sustains the industry is inhumane. Don't think they will succeed, but this could get very messy for the horse racing industry.

As a preference, can I back

Belmont Race 5 No.3 Insurgency $10 win

If you prefer me to steer clear of race meetings not nominated in the rules, then can I have

$10 Richmond to beat Fremantle by more than 40 points

Thanks RT

I suspect vegans would be a massive minority when it comes to wanting jumps racing banned or made safer. If jumps are banned I wouldn't mark it down to vegans being successful in their bid.
