The RIP thread

IMO, for a show made 40+ years ago of only 12 episodes in 2 split seasons that still leaves me literally ROFLOL-ing... :)hihi), it still is the best ever.

I suppose a lot of polls show different ones in different positions, especially the biased American polls which are nearly always 98% Yank shows (just like music.....no other country in the world exists....)

Please don't tell me Seinfield or Cheers was literally 'funnier' than Fawlty Towers....surely not!

Clearly there's a cultural thing, but it's also very subjective. I could name probably ten comedies that I think were the equal or better of FT. And most of these are from the US :)

But it's not really a fair comparison - for its day FT was well-written and well-acted - and tight. It had its own rhythm.

Yep, very subjective. Just like music. All have different tastes. I just wish they made a few more than 12, but maybe that's what made it a classic. No jumping the shark from Basil here... ;D

I mentioned it, but I think I got away with it. Only 12 episodes, but so many quotes and memorable moments.

Yep. My favourite was Communication Problems especially the Dragonfly scenes.

Basil Fawlty: Could you verify that, Major?
Major Gowen: What? Well, what, old boy?
Basil Fawlty: The-the-the... the money I gave you last night? Oh, you know, "for my wife's present." You remember, I gave it to you just before you went to the theater.
Major Gowen: The theater?
Basil Fawlty: Well, yes... You-you-you-you remember! Hm? Hm?
Basil Fawlty: [sotto] The money I won on the horse.
Major Gowen: A horse?
Mrs. Richards: What are you whispering? What are you saying?
Major Gowen: He says he won it on a horse.
Mrs. Richards: Won it on a horse!
Basil Fawlty: It doesn't matter. Do you remember me giving it to you?
[Looking confused]
Basil Fawlty: [Desperate] Oh, think, please, think!
Major Gowen: [Thinking hard for a moment] What was the question again?
:hihi

Wow. Forget some times how much things have changed. I think Love Thy Neighbour used that term as well?

A thousand apologies....

I always got confused why these 2 blokes despised each other. Were they both from Pakistan or both Indian or one of each?

Ali was from Pakistan and I believe a Muslim, whereas Ranjit was Indian and a Sikh. They used to insult each other during class, but they seemed to get along quite well outside of it. I only remember seeing one of the class in another role and that was Max; the Greek one, he bobbed up in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as a member of a sect trying to prevent the Grail from falling into Nazi hands.

Think he also bobbed up in a James Bond film with a similar role (Pierce Brosnan JB). The teacher was quite well known.

Agree. Does seem a hard show to get hold of these days.

RIP Mario Milano. As a kid, I enjoyed watching the wrestling on TV hosted by EJ Whitten and even live at Festival Hall. He and Spirios were the big favourites. As fake as it was, it was all funny stuff.....the good v bad.....ahhh memories.

On the other side of life, it looks like the great Kirk Douglas finally made it to 100.

One of each one was Indian Sikh the other a Paki.

Ranjeet and Ali their names were from memory loved that show as a kid and Love thy neighbour, and some mothers do ave em.

There was also the hot French girl, the Greek dude Max and Italian Giovanni and Juan "Perfavor" the Spaniard and the older Jap guy and the young Red Chinese Commi girl who always quoted "Chairmasn Mao" Su Lee i think her name was.

Geez that seems like a lifetime ago.
