the only possible conclusion i can come to from reading this post is you think we have the cattle and thus dont need early picks. good for you. i hope you enjoy the culture.

If that's your only conclusion, you need to expand your brain..........buy a Wii mate. ;D

Sheesh, every club needs early draft picks, but clubs exist to play and win games of footy, forst and foremost. Not limit and minimise outcomes. Our cattle, as you put it, presently are of a 9th to 12th placed side, IMHO. Said so at at season's beginning and nothing has changed my mind yet.

So you think having an extra second round pick is the difference between us being a contender and us languishing near the bottom?

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Scully/Butcher at no.2, Extra 1st rounder and Pick 19.. Not quite yet but not too far off. 1 more Draft/Trade period if we play it smart. But we won't.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

We won't get no. 2 no matter what so your argument falls down right there.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Is the list better off with pick 3 19 and 20 or pick 6 and 22 for example. Is that to hard to comprehend?

picks mean nothing if you pick dud players and don't develop them.

we have to get the last part right

Thats not the question, the question is, is it worth deliberately playing to lose every single remaining game just to get those picks? No it aint when we should be able to recruit intelligently anyway.

Picks mean nothing - lol.

I seem to remember a few supporters trying to justify us trading pick 19 for McMahon at the time becasue (a) we wouldn't have been able to pick a good kid at that pick and (b) we wouldn't have been able to develop him also.

I'll take cattle over meaningless wins thanks.

Thank you.

You need to cattle who you can actually develop. We've done ok since Francis Jackson has come on board. Top draft picks are like gold. Especially now. Ask yourself this.. We are more than half way into this season on 3 wins.. is it not worth securing an extra pick and improving our draft position instead of winning meaningless games against bottom of the ladder sides? Hold on. I already know the answer.

Are there any other professional sports in the world where you are encouraged to lose games? AFL has to do something about this mentality, its not normal.

I am usually vehemently anti tank but not this year Goodies.
The AFL is just about to hand GC17 the best picks in the land for the next several seasons. This is the last chance to get a player who is virtually guaranteed to be a very good one.
Common sense tells you that we must make the most of the AFL system (however *smile* that it is).

For some reason they have their head in the sand and refuse to recognise how flawed the system is. I hate that I want us to lose, it goes against everything football should be about.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Unfortunately that's the system and we need to make the most of it.

ToO, dont get me started on this, its the death bed of a Vic team or two. However, I know that GC17 have the best picks but once again I think how other clubs benefit from this will be their ability to trade with GC17 for draft picks. And this doesn't mean trying to offload your fringe players in the hope that they will be sucked in, it means realistically evaluating good players of one type that you can afford to offload in exchange for a draft pick that might land you someone who you are short of. Or trading a player who might be just on the high side of their prime for a draft pick with the focus on a long-term view. I hope that the Tigers have already planned for this in whatever decisions we make over the next couple of years.

Just a confirmation, are trades for GC picks allowed next year or is there one year they have to all be drafted by GC (I vaguley remember reading something about this).

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

How much trade value have RFC players had in the past Goodies?

I hope that you're not hanging your hat on that.

If the Gold Coast have any common sense whatsoever, they will hold onto those draft picks like they are gold nuggets rather than giving them up for recycled players.

With the current emphasis on youth it doesn't even matter if they cop some awful hidings for a few years. What will their reward be? More draft picks of course. :spin

Exactly!

If anyone at Richmond is considering loosing *any* games then I don't want them at Richmond. I don't care if its the guy mopping the floor or right up to the CEO.

They need to establish a solid fan base though. Can they afford to be easy beats early on?
