Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Thanks for clarifying that LRR. It is such a stupid system that rewards underachievement. The sooner they get rid of these priority picks and then just have a lottery for the order of draft picks for teams finishing out of the 8. These current enticements for losing are a blight on our great game.

Couldn't agree more.

as far the future of the RFC goes the last two weeks have been as good as wins if not better.

Tambling Lids Cotch Post Vickery have all shown glimpses of being A grade footballers

It is very exciting to watch

The fact that we have come so close to two final 8 teams has been very encouraging with a team of kids. Hopefully it will continue

totally agree. watching the kids play is much more enjoyable than watching the old hacks play, no matter what the results. i must say, the carlton game this week was possibly the most enjoyable game this season for me cos we played the kids, and the kids stood up and played well, never mind the loss, it's insignificant to me at this point.

Agree with your general sentiment, but gee the St.Kilda game was hard to watch. Quite a few around me left early, some in the third quarter.

Luckily we are not Fremantle supporters. Ever seen anything as crazy as the Adelaide - Fremantle game?

Get a pp before the start of the second round Mr P if you win less than 5 games in one year. If you do it for two consecutive years you get it before the start of the first round.

was going to reply to Mr P so thanx WT for posting that...

Seems to be alot of tanking going on last couple of weeks. Both North and West Coast both in commanding positions and let it go to lose. Melbourne, was surprised they kicked on this week, but they did have another game or so in hand, but last week they were also in a commanding position late in the match to finally let it go. Seems to me that all 5 teams still under 5 wins are hell bent on losing to gain their priority picks. If it comes to the last game Tigers and West Coast both with 4 wins, its gonna be a doozie of a game because West Coast especially will be giving up one of two picks in the top 5 if they win that match.

its crazy goodone and the hearld sun today has a big write up, shows the run home for freo, melb, rich, WC and north...

I believe that WC and North dont have room to move and will win at least 1 more game...
Rich sheez a tough one, lets just say i hope we win 1 more game and thats it..
Melb they have freo, rich and north, my dees mate whom i spoke to last night thinks they'll win 5, he cant see them beating freo as they are tanking more than anyone and believes richmond will drop that game against them (dees), he reckons we want scully badly.

have to agree MT, i proposed some time ago a slightly different lottery system which i think the AFL should adopt...

Top 8 teams remain as is, u play finals then the order goes from 9 to 16 which is fair enough...

A lottery then goes like this;

Ladder Positions 9 to 12 determine draft pics 5, 6, 7 and 8, so u can finish 9 and still get pic 5 but worst case pic 8
Ladder Positions 13 to 16 determine draft pics 1, 2, 3 and 4, so like the above u could finish 13 and still get pic 1 but worst case scenario pic 4

PP should be instead of 1 year for receiving a PP at the start of the 2nd round have it for 2 years in succession...so for arguments sake RFC and North and Freo would not receive a PP at the start of the 2nd round this year as its only 1 year with 4 wins, now do it over 2 yrs and fair enough u receive a PP at the start of the 2nd round...
Same goes for the PP at the start of the 1st round if u win 4 games or less for 2 yrs running u receive a PP as mentioned above at the start of the 2nd round, make it 3 yrs running if ur down the bottom for 3 yrs ina row and i mean less than 4 wins then i say u deserve a PP in the 1st round....

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Seems people are finally warming to draft pics, season is nearing the end and our draft positioning is becoming more important, i do recall some weeks ago that the poll had 'late Season Wins" on 67 and Draft Pics (inc PP) on 54, then it jumped to 57 but still some 10 votes behind late season wins now approaching round 16 the votes have swung the other way in favour of draft pics (inc PP), 10 ahead now....

Draft pics (inc priority pic) 78 (53.4%)
Late Season Wins 68 (46.6%)

Wouldn't work, there would be tanking to finish 13-16 so as to be eligible for the #1 pick. Finish 12th and your best pick is #5.

Needs to be a probability-weighted lottery involving the non-finalists, without subdivisions.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

We need more quality youth with 3 picks in the top 20 or so.

I would like one more young tall defender and two more midfielders.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

The simplest was to fix it is simply get rid of the PP's. Then tanking at best can achieve one or two picks higher. The average fan won't be fussed by that but Melbourne's case this year is clear - picks 1, 2/3 and 18ish against say picks 3 and 20ish.

agree. it's the priority pick that's the big incentive, even if it's at the start of the 2nd rd.

I reckon something like 9th gets 8 tickets in the draw, 10th gets 7, 11th gets 6,......, 16th gets 1. This means there's incentive to finish higher.

Tough to get a perfect solution though.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Seriously people how do remember the 2005 season? We played honorably and finished 12th then took JON in the draft at pick 8......... :-[ This was not a good year!

We could have re-fuelled if we won four games dishonorably with two picks of a crop that included Ryder, Clarke or Higgins.

This is called list management. Learn the rules of the game and play to them. Don't give me the Marquess of Queensbury stuff, it's a street fight remember

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

claw has always believed that lotteries are rubbish. nothing has happened to change my mind.
claw believes there should be a committee that looks into all things about where a club has been that clubs talent pool and how long a club has been down.
take us for example.07 we got a spoon and a pp at the start of the 2nd rnd. last yr we were clearly a bottom 4 side yet finished 9th. this yr we show our true colours and go bottom 4. any moron can see that past performance and the make up of our list would entitle us to a pp at the start of the 1st rnd. we have been crucified because we tried to win as many games as possible in 07.

no an independant committee is the way to go. how we set said committee up and what lines it operates under is for others much smarter than me to work out.
