Harry and Claw, we already have the nucleus of a good team with many kids still to show their wares.

This is where the difference of opinion lies. IMO we have an ordinary list and a bunch of ordinary kids coming through. Look at Coburg and you'll see the cupboards bare. The kids in the firsts arent that flash either. 2 kids last year, 3 in 07, 3 in 05. pretty poor effort. Look at the kids coming through at other clubs and look at the senior players around them. You'll see we that we are miles away from most other teams. We need to catch up some how and finishing 10th with a late run home of meaningless wins isn't gonna help. Ask yourself - why is woosha being re-signed.

D-Rod: Davidrodan why is Woosha being re-signed?

Davidrodan: I dunno

D-Rod: Choo, Choo

BTW we don't have dissociative identity disorder ;D

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

This whole debate is centred around the logic (or counter to) that you need to bottom out to ensure the best kids become available i.e high draft picks, BUT recent history will tell you that there are a lot of great kids picked up down the pecking order or even (heaven forbid) picked up as rookies after initially being over-looked... that's where I believe your argument falls over - it's just NOT guaranteed to produce a result AND you have the residual 'bonus' of enjoying the losing culture.
I'm damn sure that Cotchin, Deledio, Tambling, Reiwoldt, Rance, Moore, Jackson, Foley, Collins etc. would prefer to be winning games together - not hedging their future successes on a speculative high draft pick.

Where was Cox picked up?
What about Foley?
What pick was Rich last year?
Geelong must be kicking themselves at only being able to get Selwood huh?

Of course nothing is guaranteed Ocker. But you increase your percentage and if you are down the bottom in a draft year that has an absolute standout then you are much better off being in a position to take them.
Look no two drafts are the same, but lets take Cotch for example, this guy looks like he could be as good as anyone, and I do not say that lightly. It would have been awful to finish middle of the road that year and miss a potential superstar like that.
Yes there will be greats of the game that slip down the order, yes there will be top five pick duds. But its all about percentage, the more high picks you get, the more likely you get the next matchwinner.

And that is what we need - the matchwinner that we lack.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Had a crack at a ladder predictor and had us with 4 wins beating Melbounre only. Had WC and Freo with 6 & 7 wins respectively and Melbourne with 2 wins beating WC at home. In that scenario (with us tanking) we get pick picks 3, 18,19.
With those I believe Melborne would take Scully & Butcher leaving us Trengove at 3. Love us to take Cunnington & Christensen from Falcons with 18 & 19 if available.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Given all this talk about "why has Worsfold been reappointed" ... I'm guessing Harry & Claw are happy to give me odds on whether West Coast will win any more than 1 game for the rest of the season? Money where your mouth is boys. You reckon West Coast are tanking? I'll take any odds you give me...

This is of course after Claw sobers up from celebrating his beloved knocking off the Hawks tonight ;)

Why have WCE given Worsefold an extension - coz he plays to win? He's tanking dude and WCE couldn't be happier. They'll be holding up the cup light years before we do, don't worry about that.
Yep nice Tank By Worsfold Harold ;D

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

A top 3 pic can get these types of players as we have previously with lids and cotchin...

Clawman and harrymeister would be crying seeing natanui strutting his stuff, last year them 2 and a few others didnt want us to win more than 4 games as we wouldve had the first pic "priority pic, No 1" and another top 5 pic, natanui and rich or natanui and watts would be at punt road now, they were right and on the money...players of this calibre dont go pic 6 or 7 or 8...yep rich went pic 7 but he was first touted to go pic 3 along with watts and natanui..
We couldve had them both plus another 3 top 20 pics in this coming draft, gee im already crying thinking about all this...

Bring on 3 top 20 pics in the 09', 3, 18 and 19 etc etc

I think you will find that they are having a go at harry and claw for implying that WC's tanking is methodical.

well they did tank last year WC no doubt about it, i dont know maybe just signing a 2 yr contract he's feeling a little safe woosha...
I was feeling a little sceptical with WC of late but them winning 2nite kind of blew that out of the water...Then again when or if they win their 5th game then ill say yep no tanking this year for the WC..

Their run home has them playing Melb (MCG) next week, Freo, North and Rich all at SUBIACO, ud think they'd win at least 1 of those.

hmm claw has mentioned wce on this thread how many times ::) or related wce to tanking on this thread how many times. seems to me claw is being confused with the figment of peoples imagineings. nothing changes with the ferals.

Re: To win or not to win - Draft pics V late season wins

Too much at risk with tanking. Players llosing integrity in the club knowing they are not being givenbest chances of winning, it is a recipe for ultimate failure. Apart from getting a good palyer every now and then hte negatives outweigh them way too much. SUpporters dropping off due to losing, lack of membership, appeal to sponsors not as good, players losing interest and belief in the values of the club they are palying for. Tanking is ridiculous and has way too many negative consequences that would outweigh getting a potential superstar who will end up not being of much value due to the reasons mentioned above. How can his talents be utilised properly in a culture of perennial failure. Why would they want to bother.

Spot on.

A win against the defending premiers regardless of said form would be against the tanking playbook

Imagine the meltdown those two will go into if we are on 4 wins and knock off Hawthorn later in the year ...

So West Coast aren't tanking in your opinion?

lol to much risk after 26 yrs of the same the real risk is to do what we have always done. oh well im looking forward to another 26 yrs of mediocrity with ferals worrying about doing things differently but ultimately doing nothing.
