The Official "RFC Coaching Position" Discussion Thread

Why does the current Hardwick situation get me thinking of a Meatloaf song....

Craig Cameron:
Stop right there!
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further--!

Do you wanna coach us?
Will you coach us next year?
Do you need us?
Will you never leave us?
Will you make us so happy winning games by the bag?
Will you get us to the finals and will you win us a flag?

We gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you wanna coach us!!!?
Do you wanna coach us next year!!!?

Hardwick:
Let me sleep on it
CC, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Craig Cameron:
Will you coach us next year?

Hardwick:
Let me sleep on it!!!

Craig Cameron:
Will you coach us next year!!!

Hardwick:
I couldn't miss another job
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to Mark Williams and Brett Duncanson
That I would coach Port to the end of time
I swore that I would coach Port to the end of time!

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with Mark Williams
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with Port!!!

If we ever come good, and my backside is still pointing to the ground, Midnight Oil's "Forgotten Years" is gonna get a belting and a half!!

Just on Rawlings.

I'm sure the people making the decisions know that they have retained Rawlings for next year. He is contracted and there are no more senior jobs around. The only risk of losing him is that he may go somewhere else as an assistant. Hawthorn might be a possibility if they have to replace Hardwick but, nonetheless, he is contracted and would need to make a very good case to be released.

He'll be an asistant at Richmond next year.

That leaves Hardwick, Richardson and Hinkley. Now Richmond have been interviewing coaches for a while, mainly because they need to replace a couple of assistants as well, including a senior assistant in Royal.

If they have been going about this correctly they will end up with three of the four remaining candidates. A senior coach and a Director of coaching who will be the other candidate that presents to the board. In each case, either role would be a step up from their current position.

Remember, Rawlings has only been the VFL coach this year so he can tick the "coach your own team" box. He has done that now. What he needs to do next is show that he can successfully take control of an aspect of an AFL team.

My guess is that three of Hardwick, Hinkley, Richardson and Rawlings will all be working together at Richmond next year. Hardwick holds the key to all this because he has another option, albeit of the "sword of Damocles" variety. We'll know sooner than you might think.

Just when I start doubting him I search back and find scooty's first statement on the role from way back in April before Wallace was sacked.....

I can't see it myself. The only thing in your post i think is 50/50 is Rawlings staying on. Contracted or not. I don't think he will return to being an Assistant Coach I think if he stays/returns it will be more in a similar role to the start of this year as Coach of Coburg and in more a development role.

Hardwick I suspect will be too ambitious or have a better offer elsewhere, as an Assistant. I also think he will find it tricky leaving Hawthorn for anything other than a senior job.

Richardson will stay at Essendon if he doesn't get our job most assuredly and Hunkley the same at Geelong I suspect.

It's Senior Coach or nothing I believe strongly for our three top candidates.

Agreed. They're not going to go from better clubs to Richmond just to be an assistant unless we offer $$$ way over what they're worth.

I’ll be a bit more specific.

Hinkley will be senior coach or he will stay put. Hardwick will be senior coach or he will go to Port Adelaide and play silly-buggers with Mark Williams. Rawlings will stay at Richmond as an assistant.

Have you looked at Richardson’s CV lately? Coach of East Burwood, Coburg coach 2001, WB’s development coach 2003-05, Collingwood Development coach 2006-8, Essendon Assistant coach, 2009. What does this tell you?

Richardson has not had an armchair ride into coaching. Every move he has made has been strategic. Where were WB on the ladder in 2003? Where were Collingwood in 2006, where was Essendon last year? Find the run-down cafe and improve it, that's a better career move than buying the market-leader and watching it implode. He is prepared to take the steps required to climb the ladder. He will be tempted by a Director of Coaching Role. And he is perfect for it, given that he has specialized in development of younger players in recent years. He is exactly what Richmond need from a 2-I-C and it provides him with another step up the ladder to climb. The next time someone needs a senior coach, he will be front-and-centre in everyone’s minds.

Hinkley or Hardwick coach, Richardson 2-I-C is the smart play here.

Yep agree with this post and I expect as usual that they'll largely want to bring their own assistants group to the party or at least play a key role in their recruitment.

Question Tottie?
Since when has anyone who left Richmond been 'front-and-centre in everyone’s mind'?

And a good queston it is!

You stuff up and nobody wants to know you.

Here's another question for you. All things being equal, at some stage even Richmond will get something right and climb the ladder. I know it is hard to visualise but somewhere along the line, it will happen. It might be a fluke, it might take some really amazing work but it will happen. Who will be the highest profile assistant coaches then?

Wallace, this year. Media gigs designed to get everyone watching from his calling of a RFC match just after he left to trying to ignite the Tanking debate with his "look at me comments".

I'd be very, very surprised if we ended up with more than a coach out of the 'process' from the remaining candidates (Rawlings aside). I hope you're right though Tottie.

You're right on that front (though yes I do find it hard to visualise) however I still find it unlikely that assistants from clubs like Essendon, Hawthorn and Geelong will just pick up and move to Tigerland in relatively similar roles particularly under a guy who beat them out for the top spot. Like I said I'd expect the senior coach to have a big part to play in A.C. recruitment and I expect the odd fresh face.
