The Official "RFC Coaching Position" Discussion Thread

■ Richmond and North Melbourne continued their search for new coaches. Both clubs appear to be moving towards consolidating short lists with the Tigers hoping to make a decision well before the end of the home-and-away season.

I'd be rapt if this was the case, it would be a dream result. I don't believe the process should be hurried or shortened but the sooner the better. If it dragged out too long we could potentially loose ground in other areas.

Lions assistant Adrian Fletcher - has put his name in the ring - haven't heard much about his prospects, hardly even named in media.

Its where each candidate would go from here and how they would go about it which will hopefully reveal who is actually the right person to take the tigers forward.

This is the heart of the matter where I am concerned.

Some seem to be happy to take things for granted or jump on the media bandwagon, I'm a little more wary myself. Not from intelligence, I have none. But twice bitten, three times more shy thanks to Wallace & Geisch.

I'm not ready to join the Rawlings love fest yet, despite thinking he has done a great job as a CARETAKER (very different to a real coach).

Depends how you look at it, I am not saying put weight on all of the following, but i have some fears such as;

Jade hasn't neccesarily really made any hard decisions, he's possibly made smart political decisions for his career.

Jade was popular as an Assistant. He was the most popular of the Assistants in terms of getting along with the players. Wallace became untenable towards the end. Obviously the players will lift and morale will improve once the black cloud is gone and the sun comes out in Rawlings, someone most of the players like I get the impression. Is this neccesarily a good thing though or a strong factor? Players shouldn't be advocating coaches fullstop, let alone based on popularity contests. Sure it is important the players want to play for the coach but it has to be for the right reasons and not because of comfort zones. That's part of our culture problem we need to change, people not comfortable out of the comfort zones and wanting the easy rides or expecting results to happen with time rather than hard work.

Some seem to be over emphasising how much the players are playing for each other too. Sure it's a improvement but it is minimal in my opinion. It's a natural flow on from increased morale and happier players bonded through a tough time that is starting to be put behind them (as far as Wallace's tenure).

You also have the natural flow on that once the scruitiny is of the Coach (Wallace) it gets turned on the players and they know it. They can't point fingers and say it's because of the walking sultana with indecipherable magnet boards anymore.

I suspect the Board and club have had a strong influence over how the players are used/named and who is tried etc. I think Cameron might be the power behind the scenes there more so than Rawlings myself. He is the List Manager and he has to make the decisions.

My main fear is Rawlings role right now is more as a mouthpiece for club and instrument for list management. Albeit a well speaking and likeable one with great communication skills.

Either the Board will feel he is or can be something special or he will merely be a means to a end.

I do believe this process is a real one, so I will be happy to support 100% whoever is named at the end of it. I just think despite all things shown as caretaker, Rawlings would not be a favorite myself. Clearly he has a chance but in my book I wouldn't have him as the favorite when there are more credible and experienced opposition. To be fair to Jade though he could bea natural talent, there is always intangibles when these sort of things are being filtered. It's not just about the most experienced.

Its not just the 1 match, that match was the straw that broke the camels back for me.

I think maybe your expectations of what a caretaker coach can achieve it a bit high. He has come in mid season with a team on the bottom of the ladder recruited and trained around a particular playing style. There is only so much change and improvement he would be able to get in the short term. Teams take years to build, game plans take at least one preseason to teach, usually longer. FWIW I have noticed gradual improvement in the style of our play and our defensive accountability.

Do you think Hawdick, Richardson or whoever could have got a better performance out of the team in the same situation?

I'm not sold on Rawlings, but I'm not going to write him off either on the basis of a few bad games.

That's because he didn't get an interview.

Don't think he will get it but maybe we have been a bit tough on Jade because of our inconsistent performances over the past few weeks. After all we have been playing kids, Cousins and has beens.
Hard to set up a successful defensive strategy with kids and has beens.

It was reported last night on 3aw that Hardwick had met up with Port officials to discuss coaching options there.

Mike Sheehan was bemused why he would want to go to Port as an assistant for 2 years with no gurantees of the senior job. Mike said he is confident that he will get either the Richmond or North jobs.

King also publicly withdrew from the North Melbourne race as well last night on AW

Said after discussions with trusted advisors, the Tigers poor track record during his tenure meant that he would have no chance getting the job.

I was actually quite stunned by this. I know the team you come from is a part of your resume, but if you believe in yourself and your philosophy on football, you can rise up against this (look at Knights).

Listening to it I was glad he would be leaving soon. Sounds like he's down on his time at the Tigers, which I understand, and thinks he needs a new start to rebuild his rep.

Cameron was extremly impressive he has the tactical nous the ability to communicate however he has not been apart of a flag and has only been a coach at one club however they belive his organisational skills development skills and the fact he has done an apprenichip under the tactical genisis of rocket benifit him plus his understanding of the tigers history and his desire to see success is what impresses them

Scooty was off the mark here it seems.

Cameron, Lepitsch, Rock, and Neeld out of the running.

Will be out of Hardwick, Rawlings, Scott, Richardson and Hinkley. Scott and Hardwick leading the way
