The Blair "Which?" Project

Regardless, the past is in the past, we'll take our medicine and get some quality youth through the door at the end of the year.
That's it, we could have 50 pages of analysis and nothing changes, it just makes us frustrated.

Better to look forward

The other way to look at it is that we won our flags partly because we had some elite talent but the fact is for a club like ours to get that elite talent we probably need to be *smile* for a period

you may be right but if you look at the stats less than half the players picked between 31-50 make it over 40 games. He was pick 46 and plays his 40th game tomorrow.

So if he stops now he is about average for where he was picked

Certainly been afforded plenty of opportunities. I certainly don't wish him to fail, even though I have major doubts still. Hopefully can carve out a decent career.

Excellent summation posh. Add in 4-5 top juniors over next two years (fingers crossed) and we are back in a major way.

Our defence is looking promising for the future, wings and mids also ok.

Forwards we have very few I would consider lock best 22 - Lynch is really the only one. Potential in Bauer, Cumberland, Campbell, MJR, Lefau. (i consider Bolton a mid)

No doubt thinks can change quickly get a quality draft next 2 years to. If you told me we have found a few good kids in Campbell, Miller, Brown, Hugo etc and older bloke Lefau start of season I would say not sold on that.

Conor Nash, I’d be throwing the kitchen sink at him.

We are going to need bodies to shield the next generation of mids. Absolute uncompromising attack on the ball.

Perfect partner for Taranto. Sends Hopper more outside. And runs both ways.

I'm pretty sure he just agreed to a new 4yr deal.

Hmm. Maybe.
FootyWire shows he’s a UFA end of 2024. I’ll keep looking though.
Nearly 26, 198cms, 94 kgs, 87 games

A team to look at this year for players is the swans.

They have a very tight salary cap and have recontracted a lot of players this year. They also have Warner coming out of contract next year so they need space to do a deal with him.

They may well have to let a couple go.

Or we can help them keep Warner with cap relief for picks.

One player to keep an eye on is Jacob Kostanty.

This is the way to manage having a *smile* list and not overpaying them.

How do you actually execute this though?

I’m not sure ‘in exchange for pick 18 and 36 Richmond pays 250k of Warners’ salary for 3 years’ is an allowed deal.

This is 1 area that the AFL have been looking to add to the allowed trade package, essentially selling parts of your salary cap for Picks. It will be interesting to see if this is brought in as part of the changes to the overall trade system either this year or next. It would be a good addition IMO.

Trade your pick/s to “overpay” your salary cap by plonking the excess on another club’s salary cap.
The “overpayer” ie “plonker” keeps their “overpaid” player/s by sacrificing a pick or 2 depending on the salary cap money they “plonk” on the “plonkee”
The “plonkee” club that takes on the excess salary cap from the other club receives a pick or picks for taking the “plonker” extra money

The “plonker” would have a full list and they’d near be contending and don’t want to cast anyone off. Their salary cap is about to explode by trying to keep their list together. They get the advantage of keeping all the players they want.

The “plonkee” club would be one rebuilding. Need extra decent picks. Have a young inexperienced list and they can use their cap room by “renting” it to the “plonker” club, in return for some juicy draft picks. Rather than use that space to front load contracts to “fill” their salary cap.

Like the Suns did with the Cats taking Bowes. Take an overpaid player who isn't in their plans, give up a fourth rounder and get a high pick in return. Cats got pick 7 that way for a future 3rd and a hit to their cap.

Wasn't much of a hit to the moggies cap. First thing they did was rework his contract to a much lower paid 4 year deal.
