Tambling (merged)

Thanks mate. His TOG/disposal/CP numbers are starting to look a little like Foley's a couple of years ago.

he is gonna be a gun by years end, maybe already is now

Interestingly, I have just checked Pro-Stats and Ritchie is our no. 1 tackler with 23 so far this year. Kudos to him for leading in this super important stat!

Also highest inside 50s - 21.

He has also got top 50 in the league for: Running bounces (in fact Richmond has 7 players in this category with Jake King the highest in the league ;D) and Contested possessions.

Not a bad effort! Certainly stepped up this year.

Here's a brief summary of the past fortnight: "Tambling is improving...tackle count is high...coming along nicely...question marks over his pace & agility...more work is required with his decision making...but his doing just fine...stick that where it fits!"

Last year, Tambling salvaged something in the 2nd half of the year, in what was a dissapointing season overall for Richmond and himself. In the next fortnight, Richie must instinctively focus on attacking the ball. He cant afford to be a spectator against the likes of the hawks or cats midfield. There will be alot of pressure off the ball and it's this part of Tambling's game that must show improvement. Dont worry about the increasing stats, they only hide the real problems.

Are there many other players in the AFL who rack up plenty of touches, tackles, contested possessions and kick a few goals that have real problems Skills?

Tambling got himself into a mess half way through last year because of the pressure he received "off" the ball and this consequently made him struggle. There are many moments throughout home & away games, where intensity and pressure resembles close to the norm of a finals match. I'm pleased to see Tambling getting more touches, but if he can work on the real problem (as stated in my earlier post), his game will flourish to the point where he will always get 20+ possessions a game. I dont want him to be the type of Richmond footballer who goes missing in the big games against the better teams - that has let us down for 26 years.

Yep I think the real problem with Tambling is the perception of some supporters who really don't know much about what it takes to become an AFL player and that it doesn't happen overnight. I haven't seen any real major deficiencies in Tambling's game this year, in fact I have seen him lead by example. I'm sure some would still be making weak arguments even if Tambling was on top of every statistic in teh book.

No need to get personal GoodOne, this thread should be used to critique his game...and to celebrate a 100 page journey. ;D

Pressure around the stoppages Disco forces Tambling out of the contest early.

I don't disagree, but this would be an area where he'd have a good chance of improving wouldn't it? A lot of kids struggle with this early in their careers (man childs like Lewis are the exception). Agree it'll be a good lesson for him however he goes the next couple of weeks.

Absolutely. It's this area of his game (and his kicking) that will ultimately determine just how far we rate him as a footballer.

True. I haven't really stuck my neck out (aside from to say we need time before we really know how good he is going to be throughout his career) in this debate but I have always been of the opinion that if he is going to become a truly valuable player it's going to be as a ball winning midfielder and you're right that to become that he needs to learn to stay in the contest. I think improved fitness will help him in this area too.

One thing that I will say has been very good from him this year is his natural use of his left foot. He absolutely looks to me like a true two-sided player now.

Yes. You must be watching alot of replays lately. ;)
This is very important, especially coming out of the middle.
In any given contest at AFL level, the very good players think with both sides of their body.

Who's getting personal, I wasn't necessarily referring to you ;)

His disposal looks to be far more composed ATM & his decision making is improving too. The confidence is growing and the game is getting better.
The next fortnight against the two best midfield's in the comp will be a big test for ALL our young mids and as Disco says he will learn from it no matter how he goes.
I hope he throws caution in to the wind and doesn't change a thing he's been doing recently.
