Anyone seen Howard and Turnbills latest hysterical spin on the ALPs 'radical economy destroying greenhouse gas target'?

Absolutely unbelievable. They must have decided they've got nothing on global warming so they'll try and drag the agenda back their way, ie. nothing to worry about, no action required.

I find it staggering for 3 reasons:

1) The target isn't radical by any measure except those of extremeist global warming denialists. 20 per cent reduction of 1990 levels by 2020. That is, a fifth reduction in 13 years. Given the seriousness of the situation, its not a radical figure. Nowhere near enough if you believe the science, and I do.

2) The level of hysteria of Howard yesterday was amazing, You'd think Labors target was zero emmissions in 5 years the way they carried on. The level of hysteria suggests to me they really don't want to act on this issue at all. Even the coal industry reckons the Coalition stance is a bit over the top.

3) The apparent total lack of faith in the capacity of Aussie's to research, develop, innovate and make money from new ideas. Again, the way the government is carrying on, you'd think all we are capable of is digging black stuff up and burning it. I find this approach extraordinary from the side of politics that is supposed to be the most capitalistic (I don't buy that for a second by the way).

Finally, its just a target. If we don't reach it, or if we hit snags on the way and have to adjust it up or down (California have adjusted theirs up), so be it. International cops aren't going to lock anyone up.

Again, either Howard is digging himself deeper and is becoming a bit like Abraham Simpson, or I'm taking crazy pills again.

Poor old Ruddy hasn't had a good couple of days:

Firstly, Keating has a crack at him and his team:

and then Ruddy himself makes a boo-boo:

Mr Rudd told reporters he blamed himself for a blunder yesterday in which he welcomed a decision by Prime Minister John Howard to send a further 300 troops to Afghanistan - despite such a decision not being made yesterday.
"As you would appreciate, when you are at press conferences like this and something immediately breaks of a significant nature, then you tend to want to respond because you are not going to be out talking to the media later in the day," Mr Rudd said.
"Information is an imperfect business, and sometimes you get it a little bit wrong.
"None of (the Labor advisers) were behind me yesterday - I'm responsible for the events yesterday."

In Rudd's defence, I think Keating should shut his mouth.
He has had his go as PM, and while he may be right in what he says, he should be staying out of the limelight, and letting Rudd and his 'team' do what they do.

Interesting in the other story, that Rudd welcomed the '300 more troops' to Afghanistan, even though Howard made no such promise.
Looks like another thing Rudd agrees with Howard about... ;)

Looks like the pressure of the election is starting to weary Mr Rudd - and the elections has not been called yet!

The other bloke is running around like a headless chook making all sorts of shallow promises - about Climate Change policy and Workplace relations etc. etc. and then has the temerity to say "Who do you trust?" Certainly not you Mr Howard.

Our choice at the election poll looks very poor again.

SURELY AS A PEOPLE WE DESERVE BETTER

Have to agree.

A headless chook running around in circles and a talking head with no body or substance. Then there's the greens whose policies would lead us into a depression to beat all depressions and the Democrats and DLP who no longer remember what they are supposed to believe in.

Whatever happened to the good old days when the choices were clear cut?

It is easy to be cynical about both sides, but in the end we get the government and opposition we deserve.

As someone who was once a member of the ALP, the "differences" between our choices is almost laughable.

Both parties agree on 90% of things

Both parties then blow up the remaining 10% to make them such high and mighty critical issues.

Both parties will slag each other off over these 10%, even if its just for cheap political points scoring.

And the best bit, voters expect it and demand it! When I do my "how to vote card" bit at the ballot boxes, you usually get chatting with the others from the Libs, Dems, Greens, and Family First. After all, you are standing there for hours with nothing to do, so you talk. We then get people who come up and criticise us for talking to each other, saying we should be hating each other and how can we be friendly with people whos politics we oppose. People love the fight part of politics, and its why Keating did so well dispite being disliked.

On another thing, if you know who you are going to vote for, dont take the how to vote cards of the others and be offended if they offer you one. I can tell you right now we dont care who takes them, and prefer not to hand them out to people who ditch them because its a waste of paper and it just means we need to get another fresh stack sooner :)

Good point. I refuse to take any of the how to vote cards as they are a waste of paper and also take any independent thought away from the voter.
