Talking Politics

Understanding the issues would mean making an effort to read material that may not support your own views. Chelsea has admitted that he is incapable of such a thing.

Eightace...A problem that I have is that certain posters don't seem to read posts properly. The following is a perfect example. Where have I admitted to what you infer?

I restrict my time to those topics/posters who interest me and perhaps agree with me.  They know who they are.

I agree Liverpool, point I'm making is that I have done that. I admit there's times I've let loose with a smart arse comment here and there, pretty harmless stuff and nothing I wouldn't say t a friend or family member during a spirited debate, hence the christmas comment.
It just seems to me that as soon as the evidence presented by say, me or Razor, starts to get a bit hard for the opposition, say, you, chelasea and Poppa, to deal with, suddenly the focus goes onto being all indignant at a supposedly personally insulting post, that actually isn't.

Tigersnake,
I think swearing at people and names such as "*smile* idiot" or "shithead" aren't harmless stuff, especially if that poster has only stated their opinion, and not used personal insults directed at anyone.
If this is what happens at your Christmas, then maybe it's best you don't invite me! :hihi
It can be quite intimidatory to someone who has posted on that thread for the first time, or even someone new to the forum altogether.
If I was thin-skinned, I would have left here long ago.
I admit, I have been sarcastic, but I think sarcasm isn't against the post-guidelines....personal insults are.

tigersnake said:
Also said this a million times Liverpool, if someone has views that are based on little or no understanding of the issues, they are misguided. Full stop.

Tigersnake,
I think that is one of the major problems between some of the posters though mate.
Just because I have a different view, doesn't mean it's misguided.....who makes the left-wing on here the guided ones with all the knowledge, and the so-called "right wingers" the ones with 'little or no understanding'.....what, simply because they have a different view on things? or a different opinion?
I think that's a little bit....uhm....arrogant?
Just because people have a different opinion, doesn't mean they are wrong or misguided....its their opinion, thats all.
The same with politics...some people vote Libs, some vote labor...all for different reasons....is one set of voters wrong? is one right? I don't think so....for me, I vote Libs because I think they handle our money a lot better, and I think with John Howard, he has been a bit tougher on certain issues that I think got out of hand under the previous regime.

I don't read your posts chelsea. I only read those who interest me.

Eightace,
Maybe just a simple apology to Chelsea would have been sufficient enough?

No need for an apology, Einstein. My post was perfectly valid. And the day I need to take advice from the likes of you is the day I take the pills.

It wasn't valid.
You made a mistake, by posting that it was Chelsea who said such a thing, when in fact, it was PoppaX, and Chelsea simply corrected you.
Just an apology would have been the courteous thing to do, I would have thought.
And there is no need for the "Einstein" comment at me...we're not in kindergarten mate....the name is "Liverpool".
Let's leave it that, shall we?
This is the "Politics" thread, so can we just leave the personal stuff out of it now...and stick to the topic?

Thanks Razor for all the facts and figures relating to nuclear energy. It has certainly helped clarify things for me. Let's hope some common sense prevails in Canberra and Solar, geothermal and possibly hydrogen are embraced as we wean ourselves off cheap but dirty coal.

I'm hoping that nanotechnology will have some of the answers to our dependence on oil for plastics, textiles, chemicals etc.

Does anyone have thoughts on ethanol and other biofuels as replacements for petrol?

I can't believe I learn so much from a Football website....but then again we all barrack for the mighty Tigers.

No worries HT.

Hydrogen is effectively a way of storing energy, not a means of producing it, so it's inherently energy negative. Sounds good in political speeches though. ;)

Nanotech is a very interesting and exciting field...unfortunately it probably won't make a great impact on our lives in the future as we move to a world where there is less of everything to go around - including research dollars. Not to mention the fact that ATM the medical profession - IMO where it has most potential to do wonders - is completely reliant on plastics and cheap oil...so much future research funding will have to be directed to finding non-plastic replacements for a huge amount of 'essentials.'

Ethanol and all current bio-fuels are EROEI negative - and that is in our current age where inputs (fertiliser, pesticides, fuel costs etc) are only just beginning to rise. Eventually they will be prohibitively expensive and make ethanol/bio-fuels increasingly unviable.

It does have some potential in helping make individual farms more self-sufficient, but it is not the answer to our energy woes. To replace the amount of fuel the world currently needs (let alone the future) we would need another couple of planets and still struggle to find enough agricultural land to feed ourselves.

A shift to a more sustainable source of bio-fuel like this have the potential to make it a bit more viable, but it's not being widely adopted, and again, is more viable for individuals and small communities than as a national or global solution. At least a perennial source like copaifera langsdorfii has less inputs and other uses (medicinal, timber) which are incorporated into its life cycle - unlike input hungry annuals like corn and cane.

Current ethanol/bio-fuel sources require massive subsidies to farmers in order to be viable even at a small scale...and small scale is all it will ever be because the bottom line gets worse the further you scale it up. In reality, all it can achieve is to keep some farmers on the land a bit longer using outdated monocultural practices and also ensure a few more food producers switch to a different unviable industry.

US claims 'plot' to topple Lebanese government
Last Updated: 8:36pm GMT 01/11/2006

The White House has claimed that "mounting evidence" shows Syria and Iran are joining with the militant group Hizbollah in plans to topple the Lebanese government.

Press secretary Tony Snow said that there were indications that Syria wants to prevent the Lebanese government from setting up an international tribunal that would try those accused of involvement in last year's assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri.

In an unusually strong statement, he said any attempt to manufacture demonstrations or use violence or physical threats against Lebanese leaders would be a clear violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and of three UN Security Council resolutions.

A UN investigation into Mr Hariri's killing implicated top Syrian and Lebanese security officials.

The assassination sparked massive street protests and prompted Syria to withdraw its forces from Lebanon under international pressure.

Mr Snow said Washington was "increasingly concerned by mounting evidence" that Syria, Iran and Hezbollah "are preparing plans to topple Lebanon's democratically elected government."

The statement provided no specific details about the stated evidence.

The White House announcement came as Hizbollah threatened street protests to force early elections in Lebanon. Hizbollah is demanding creation of a "national unity" cabinet that would give the Islamic militants and their allies veto power over key decisions.

The United States has been concerned about Syrian and Iranian actions in Lebanon for some time.

At the United Nations on Monday, John Bolton, the US Ambassador, accused the two countries of trying to destabilise Lebanon's democratically elected government by violating a UN arms embargo.

He stressed that Syria's obligations to respect a UN arms embargo authorised in August "are particularly important, as it is the one country other than Israel that borders Lebanon."

Those of us whom studied French Revolutionary history can well remember Robespierre's "Committee of Public Safety" and how this institution brought "terror" to may thousands of innocent men & women.

A man walked into a curio shop in Melbourne.

Looking around at the exotica, he noticed a very life-like,life-size bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag, but it looked so striking that he decided he must have it.

He took it to the owner and asked "How much is the bronze rat?"

"Twelve dollars for the rat, and a hundred dollars if you bring it back," said the owner.

The man gave the shop owner twelve dollars. " I' ll take the rat. And I won't be bringing it back."

As he walked down the street carrying the bronze rat, he noticed that a few real rats had crawled out of alleys and sewers, and began following him down the street. This was a bit disconcerting, so he began to walk a little bit faster. Within a couple of blocks, the group of rats behind him grew to over a hundred, and they began squealing.

He started to trot towards the Bay. He took a nervous look around and saw that the rats numbered in the thousands, maybe in the millions and they were all squealing and coming towards him faster and faster.

Terrified he ran to the edge of the water and threw the bronze rat as far out into the Bay as he could.? Amazingly, the millions of rats all jumped into the water after it, and were drowned.

The man walked back to the curio shop. "Aha," said the owner, You're bringing it back!

"Actually no" said the man. " I came back to see how much you want for that little bronze John Howard over there."

I gotta ask...who in their right mind schedules an election on the same weekend as two regular music festivals??? Didn't they read the calendar? Yeah, I know you can postal vote (which is what I'll have to do) but are they stupid or what? You'd think the first thing they'd look at would be "oh, so whats on that weekend that might conflict with this funky election?". But no. ::)

The festivals are Ian's Earthcore and Queenscliff Music Festival, by the way.

When I went to Livid on federal election day in 1998 we voted en route, but I'm pretty sure the organisers ran a free shuttle bus to and from the nearest polling booth.

It's only taken 5 years!

I think the election is a set date now as passed in by the government. Anyway if they had it earlier it would have clashed with the spring carnival and that would have been too hard with voting queues before the first race and campaiging issues would not have been heard due to coverage of the carnival/finals football. Dont think these festivals would have the same impact.

Regarding this current Victorian State Election, there is a something of great concern to me.

This area of concern is a candidate personally endorsed by Steve Bracks called Khalil Eideh. He is alleged to be a rabid and public antisemite, and preselected for a number 1 upper house slot. THIS MEANS HE IS VIRTUALLY GUARANTEED ELECTION.

Eideh is alleged to have publically sworn loyalty to Bashar Assad - the 'president' of Syria and is alleged to have chaired functions fundraising for HIZBULLAH. He is alleged to have described Jews as 'satan's dogs' and called for 'holy war' against the opponents of Islam.

When people are voting, think about the message that we send. Also, below are a few links to articles about Khalil Eideh and a link to protest to Steve Bracks over the matter.

I am all for immigrants from foreign countries making a new home & prospering in Australia. I also understand that descendants of immigrants would want to carry a link to their ancestral homes. However, I do worry if this person, Khalil-Eideh, does carry the views that have been alleged.

I would certainly welcome a public statement by him stating his tolerance for all peoples, races & religions, including the Jewish people & Israel. If he does this, I would gladly lend him my support.

I hope that you can understand that this is a very large concern for me.
