Talking Politics

So judging by the number of Liberal adverts I've been seeing, the Libs are going hard for the Dunkley by-election (of which I'm a resident).

They are going hard on the old negative marketing scenario and painting it as a protest vote at Albo, for 3 reasons.

1 - Albo broke a promise to reduce our power bills by $275 - Ok this one hasn't been the best result for Albo even taking account of external issues
2 - Apparently Albo broke a promise to fund the "extension of the Frankston line to Baxter". Now this is a bit of a fallacy. There is already a trainline running into Baxter, the change was electrification of the line and was essentially unfunded. The previous Scomo govt had pledged $275m but apparently it would cost $1.5bn to electrify the line. Thats about 15km of electrification from Frankston to Baxter. To me thats an awful waste of money, what would the benefits actually be? A bit for the environment I guess but $1.5bn worth of benefits???
3 - The tax cuts - They have sold this as Albo has not followed through with long term tax relief. Well actually he has, he didn't cancel it, he just spread it differently and because Dunkley has an average salary BELOW the state average, it would seem this would be falling on deaf ears.

Plus Frankston residents aren't overly pleased with Nathan Conway being the representative. If he's all about getting cash in the hands of those who needs it, why has he consistently voted to increase council rates by the maximum amount through his tenure as the Mayor of Frankston?? I think its to the point that Frankston councils rates are in the top 10 in the state, I think just on the cusp of the Top 5, despite being well down the list in terms of average earnings.

Re 1 - the promise was a reduction of $275 by 2025 - still, unlikely to happen...

Frankston quite up market but that went down hill once The Pines was built late 1950.

I live in Frankston South (the upmarket bit) and I make sure people know it when they ask where I live. I think I say South louder than the Frankston bit. My ex-wife lives near the Pines. I don't think its as bad as it used to be, but its not the best area for sure.

Spent many a summer going down the pines pool waterslide. Think it was a 20 go master pass. Just had to avoid the bodies stored in the deep end of the pool and you were good.

Was heading in from karingal. Was always clear to emphasise it was near Frankston but not Frankston.

Do you not know, that when the boats were stopped, the asylum seekers just jumped on planes, they've been coming here in their droves ever since.

You've been reading, listening and watching too much right wing news.

The below article is from 2019.

Nearly 100000 asylum seekers have arrived by plane to ...

8 Oct 2019 — More than 95,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Australia by plane over the past five years triggering fears over exploitation and slavery.

How do asylum seekers actually get on a plane to Australia without a valid passport and/or visa?

I know multiple people who haven't been able to board a plane from Australia because their passport expires within 3 months, or they don't have a visa. I went to Vietnam for Xmas and the guy before me was knocked back as he didn't have a visa.

Is it up to the country where you board, or the airline? Has always baffled me.

They arrive with a valid visa and then apply for asylum.

I think people are lazy, i shopped around, did the numbers and are paying less than 12 months ago. Check this out for a 3 bedroom house with 2 adults that are home all of the time with gas heating/water/cooking. We have been running 2 aircons on hot days. Gas is our killer
Pension discount applies

Not including daily charge of 77.86cents about $285.00 less 17%pension discount

Have not had to pay a electricity bill for over two years as WA gov is paying it. Total last bill $139.29 which included $64.00 supply charge. Gov assistance (seniors) $52.02credit. Daily average $2.39 .Not too bad as pool pump six hours a day & evaporator working overtime.

Well, in better news, Derryn Hinch is considering running for Lord Mayor of Melbourne.
FMD. Another rubbery tired old fart that wants to help rule the world, or at least a little part of it. About time some of these old dodderers put on the slippers, pulled the rug over the knees n slipped off into terrorising the retirement villages.

Nothing wrong with being a Octogenarian as long as the brain is still functioning . I have three female cousins in Melbourne in their nineties living in Brighton Sandringham Mont Albert still managing their & families affairs after losing husbands quite some years ago. As for Derek not a fan of his but do think Melbourne City Council is too Woke Teal or whatever & needs to get back just running the City. Maybe Derek is the person for the job. Here in Perth we have Basil a revelation straight as a die not this not that but looks he will enter state Parliament next election.

Watching costello media this morning and the big deal is Labor vs Lib primary vote polling. It's deceptive because they are making out that the libs are in a winning position.

Advertised poll results are normally 2pp so I assume the switch is because of the by-election

This article explains why my ears continue to bleed night after night about how "Albanese has rejected long term tax relief". Sure.

Looks like the good people of Dunkley are not stupid enough to believe some of this crap peddled by the Libs. They are stating that Labor are against long term tax relief when all they did was reallocate it to a different segment of the electorate. They haven't stopped it.

I just worked out the impact to me. The tax relief changes are actually marginally negative to me (not by much) but I think they are the right thing for the country so I'm ok with them. I'm still much better off with them than if they were completely rejected so I'm happy and I'm happy that the changes will now benefit more people.

Looks like Dunkley agree.

No idea how much the Libs have spent on their marketing campaign in Dunkley, looking at the volume of TV ads its easily in the millions of $'s. I haven't tested it, but just going off what I see, I suspect their ads are 10-1 compared to Labors and they are still losing.
