Talking Politics

Now a witch hunt is pointed at John Howard's involvement over Iraq 2033 war. I see Tassie bleeder MP Andrew "Wee Willie "Wilkie having his pennies worth. Nice guy Willie back stabbed his Army brudders & sisiters. He is in his right place a MP in Tassie.

Ooh, I reckon those consultancies make the public service look like rank amateurs when it comes to consuming taxpayer funds for very little of any worth.

DS
It does David but it is interesting how it happens

In my experience working in the public sector the workforce tends to be thin. There are a lot of people who do their jobs but not a lot of elite talent. There is some but those people are very busy and are pulled in multiple directions.
What that means is that when anything special or specific comes up they don't always have people to do the work in the time period required but also some of these public sector projects require independent views and assurance by legislation or by policy.

The consultancies perpetuate the shortage of quality by poaching key staff and paying them much more than public sector wages and then contracting them back. That seems a waste of money (and it is) but the public sector can't pay people enough under their wage policies, they cannot match offers.

Despite that there are many things that don't need consultants for which they are used. A lot of that is because the public sector is largely risk averse i.e. Noone ever got sacked by asking ( insert consultants name) .

Not defending it btw

I hear it’s a “choose your own adventure” type book.
You can read it in actual chronological order starting at Prime Minister and adding portfolios as you go, or why not start as Health Minister and see where that leads?
So many options!

He is actually releasing a new game called SCOMOnopoly. You roll the dice and get portfolios as you land on them and go around the board.

And instead of buying utilities, you sell them all off.
And there is no go directly to jail square

Inflation the lowest in 2 years. crickets from all corners of the media who are more interested in Culture Wars over Australia Day.

Now a witch hunt is pointed at John Howard's involvement over Iraq 2033 war.

78 documents deliberately hidden by Morrison in a report justifying the reason for us to go to war in Iraq, which was proven to be false.

How is this not a big, big story?

If Labor were in government at the time, you can bet your bottom dollar Morrison would have milked every drop of it. He's a disgrace.

Not really modern politics but still topical

The story that appears to be buried is the saga of the Governor general's letters in 1974-5 and the bid to have them released that was finally resolved last year. There was a program on the ABC about Jenny Hocking who is the historian who took the national archives all the way to the High Court to get access to them, the National archives and Kerr's family fought it for years. When they were finally released the Head of the national archives managed the message to the media that the Palace knew nothing of the Whitlam dismissal in 1975 before it happened. This conclusion was based on only 9 of the more than 200 letters released. You may recall the headlines at the time.

Jenny Hocking is firmly of the view that the Queen, Prince Charles and the Queen's secretary Martin Charteris all knew that Kerr was planning to dismiss the Whitlam government and that they did not stop it and perhaps even encouraged it and she says the correspondence with Kerr confirms it.

This of course a direct interference in Australian politics by Buckingham Palace as they should have said nothing more to the Governor General than "seek the advice of the Prime Minister" which of course Kerr could not do.
What this means for one thing is that we have been lied to by the then Queen, the now King and their representatives and that it shows an unacceptable involvement of a foreign country in our domestic affairs. As a young man I was outraged that an elected government could be removed like that by an unelected figurehead representing another country's monarch (apart from being a drunk) and this brings back all those emotions.

Get rid of the monarchy in Australia, it has no role here. We actually should be outraged by this.

The fact that there is not more outrage about the sacking of a democratically elected government is a blight on the history of this country. How could we just accept this, and retain the monarchy, it is so disappointing.

Then we get the morons who reckon selling Chinese crap is more important than our own democracy, you can judge for yourselves their moral compass.

My partner is an old mate of Jenny Hocking's, she worked so hard and for so long to get the Palace Letters made public. A great public service. It is meant to be our government, we should be the first to know what is going on, not the last.

Not sure if you saw the ABC doco David but her resilience and tenacity to get the papers released was incredible. She put her own money on the line. She had highly paid silk working pro bono as well.

The fact that there was any hesitation and resistance to their release is incredible. There must have been a lot of pressure on people not to, the National archives spent nearly $2 million on legal fees.

All that for what happened nearly 50 years ago. What a waste of taxpayers money, as usual.

Oh yes, we watched it.

Such a waste of money by the archives, they have plenty to do and need the funds to preserve the archives, not pay lawyers to keep the citizenry in the dark.
