Talking Politics

Today is a great day for Australia. One of the worst, if not the worst, Prime Ministers this country has ever seen is leaving politics.

I've read some rubbish on this forum but this and some of the other recent posts takes the cake.

Let's tax the people more that work hardest and studied more because I'm not smart enough or don't work hard enough or didn't study hard enough to get a decent paying job or start a business with all the risks that come with that. Not to mention that everyone who makes a few quid rorts the system. You can't rort the system with your wages and those earning $180K plus DO pay roughly half of any $ over the $180K in tax and levies, you can't just keep plonking $100K into your super every year, you can't make a PROFIT of $5M selling a business and pay no tax, unless you've got accrued losses, there's so much BS in this post it's insane.

Nearly a third of ALL tax paid in Australia comes from the less than 4% that earn in excess of $180K and many here want to whack them some more, but hey don't let facts get in the way of a good whinge.

Some people on here are dead set communists. Let's make sure no one earns too much more than anyone else and the government should pay for everything for those who can't afford things, regardless of why. And those that don't earn the big money, it's because of generational discrimination or rich people ripping off the system. Typical tall poppy syndrome, instead of aspiring to achieve, smash the ones that do.
This is a bit hyperbolic. I’ve seen MDJ post on this stuff before, he works in the tax space and generally knows what he is talking about.
Calling people communists is just ridiculous, cheapens any argument that you may have.
There is a lot of inherited wealth around with inherited privilege that has nothing to do with working hard.
Check out what percentage of medical specialists went to private schools, or partners in law firms.
I have been a victim of not coming from the “club” in Melbourne because I am public school boy who came from a very ordinary working class background, I’ve seen it and experienced it. I have seen inherited privilege that is not earned but expected.
Wanting that to change has nothing to do with tall poppy syndrome and has everything to do with creating a more level playing field for all.
How we do it is always up for debate

If people want to change the date of Australia Day, then today would be a great substitution for a public holiday :)

Morrison quitting certainly is a great day, it doesn't beat Maxine McKew kicking Howard to the kerb in the 2007 election. He was only the second serving prime minister to lose his seat, a truely great day.

Labor true blues entertaining us with their delight ScoMo going . They should be focusing on Albo & Co because we are being ripped off by corporate Australia. Albo is in damage control after waking up he sucks to middle & below order Australia.

This is actually a really good move by Albo IMO. Moving to reduce the top rate of tax back down from $200k to $180k. Leave the other tax rate changes there but increase the tax free allowance.

Keeps the tax rate changes in there to halt any political fallout amongst middle income earners but also clearly pitched to their core voters.
Agree. Those on 180K still get some benefit of the bracket changes.

Another change I would love to see is a medicare levy increase to provide some basic dental services for everyone too.

It’s going to be an interesting fight. The LNP have already commenced the broken promises line.
Personally I have always thought that philosophy to be garbage anyway. The assumption that parties have a mandate for every one of their policies at an election is flawed because we know one of two outcomes will always come from an election but that doesn’t mean the voters agree with with every policy position of the victorious party.
Even Dutton will have problems selling the original tax cuts against these because more people will benefit from the labor version but he won’t concentrate on outcome it will be wall to wall “you can’t trust this government” .

I think its a brilliant move and well timed.

firstly, it goes a long way towards nullifying the myth from the usual suspects that the government isn't doing enough to resolve the cost of living issue.

Secondly, it wedges the LNP. If they shout from the treetops they are against it, they will come across as being of touch and/or looking after their rich mates again.

Finally, if the LNP and RW media wanna turn this into a massive issue, then it'll be a deflection from Dutton's pathetic culture wars strategy.

I really can't see how Albo loses on this one.

I’m seeing a lot of people on social media carrying on “good riddance to the worst PM in Australian history.”

But was he? I've been thinking about this a lot of late, and it depends on the context, doesn't it?

In terms of bumbling incompetence and not being up to the job… sure, he wins hands down.

But in terms of damage done? Howard “wins” hands down for mine. I know that's a big statement after the damage Morrison caused by bumbling his way through the pandemic. But history has not looked too kind on Howard.

"Communists" is the latest buzzword from the right who have no idea what the word means. They just call anyone who disagrees with them a communist.

I've never been called a communist before!

And I am not fond of communism it doesn't work, there's possibly more corruption than under any other system.

yeah different ways of measuring the worst I guess.

However in terms bumbling incompetence SCOMO would have someone rivalling him and that’s Billy McMahon. Long time ago I know but he really was in that category

Yeah, Howard was good at what he did. Morrison was bad at what he did.
They both had bad priorities and policies, and both were dishonest.

What about lower income ,self funded retirees etc etc. Last year my Tax went up $2000.00 as Tax offset was made redundant.

Well maybe we take the same viewpoint as you do on other issues. I don't care unless it affects me, so frankly I don't care about your situation because its different to mine.

Or maybe I should join in with your ridiculous statement about me selling in Soho, go sell some Bintang singlets in Bali.
