According to Kingy, we are 20% better than the next best side, but that is bad news for us because there are 15 weeks left until finals and everyone will be watching us intently trying to devise a plan to beat us. While that is true, it doesn't mean they will find one. Everyone tried to find a way to beat Hawthorn for three straight years. (Not that it stopped Wankley drooling over the prospect. He is desperate for us to come unstuck.)
How do you develop a tactic to combat extreme pressure and superior running?
Teams get numbers back in defence, A) to help out defenders, because the only thing forwards like more than a 1-on-1 is a Joe the Goose, but also B) to run the ball out when they win it back. Overlap running is devastating but can only happen if you have numbers behind the ball. The trouble is, running the ball out of our forward line is immensely difficult, because each handball merely refers the pressure to the next link in the chain. This leads to dump kicks forward, which are eaten up by our defence, A) because they are so good, and B) because they have a numerical advantage.
So, what do you do? Don't get numbers back so you have an even contest when you dump kick it? Good luck leaving Jack and co. one-out. Win contested possession and play keepings-off? You'll need elite ball winners and elite ball users and a lot of patience, because if you chip it around against us, we'll man the mark every time and slow you down to a crawl. Extreme pressure and ballistic ball movement? Welcome to our backyard.
I dunno. It's hard to see a way to beat us at the moment. Pundits are asking if we're peaking too early but I reckon we have 20% improvement up our sleeve.
"Hope to meet Richmond in the grand final and then assign someone to knock out four of their players" is the clubhouse leader at the moment.
