Steve Morris F/S

re the media, there are too many wankers trying to get a story these days thats half the issue, Morris is goiing alright for a newbie. The Tigers have such a well deserved stigma attached to them for being dumb and unskilled that any opportunity to bring up old faithful for the sake of it is taken.

Very well spoken by young Steve. Didn't dodge anything, just said he aimed to learn from his mistakes.
Even when pressed again and again, he kept his cool and spoke very maturely.
I'm very impressed with him.

Agree Willo. Bizarre interviews but handled himself with aplomb.

Isn't he kicking at 80% efficiency? Sure a lot of them are chipping it around but still better than many in the AFL atm.

Not only that, but because Adolf has decided to destroy anyone in the media who presents a negative story about the AFL, they are going after soft taregts like players 4 games into their careers.

I was critical of Morris's disposal in preseason. But having re-watched his last few games I think the criticism of him in the media has been over the top. He is generally good defensively, his attack on the ball is obviously a strength and his hard running means that he's useful offensively even if he is a below par kick.

My only knock on Morris right now is he is holding Dea out of the team and I really want to see Dea play.

malthouse got into him....very harsh judging on a guy thats played 4 games, yet jackson escapes scrutiny from the media week in and out.....staggering.

Jacko didn't escape Robbo a week or two ago.
He smacked him!

maybe they should have asked him about the christensen goal?

the media manager should have stepped in and said last question to the vultures.

morris has been great so far this season imo. his disposal has been pretty good, better than I expected. but he's now labelled as a poor kick by the media and will have to live with it forever like king and rance.

This attack on Morris by the media would have to be pretty much unprecedented. A player four games into his career being ripped into in a press conference, bizarre. Does anyone remember any other four-gamer being put through such an interrogation?

KHunt and Izzy copped worse before playing a game.

Malthouse has not learnt when to go hard, when to just relax and go with the flow and when to seek more information.
But he is just 4 weeks into his new career and still carrying a lot of baggage from his sacking and replacement by a younger performer
We should reserve our final judgement until we see how he goes with more games behind him.

Yeah just watched that press conference on the RFC website.

WTF was that??

10 minutes of being grilled by tosser journos. ::)

Handled himself brilliantly.

Well done Steve.

Was a long & awkward interview.

Not sure it was the best week for the club to role out a 4 gamer after the winning goal was kicked on him...

Fair point superficially, though they copped it after careers as professionals in another code, not four games into their professional careers.

So you are the PREnder that gave the media the idea.

Shame on you :)

Just on Morris's disposal, is it really that big of a deal if he handballs so much ? When he does kick it he hits his targets now.

My sentiments exactly, if a footballer learns to play within his limitations then he should be applauded. When footballers get cute and attempt low percentage plays, things start to slowly unravel. Morris has an ungainly kicking action but he seems to have accomodated that within the general scheme of things. The ongoing challenge will be to mix it up a bit when opposition clubs begin anticipating the handballs.

Some interesting parallels with young Steves' AFL career. Maybe MM should extend the same courtesies as part of his learning curve.

I will say this about MM's analysis ability from a game day coaching perspective. He is excellent.

Half way through the 2nd Q , he had seen enough to know that it wasn't a day for tall marking forwards. He had also presumably, felt that Richmond had the ascendancy in the game at this point. He proposed that if Richmond REALLY WANTED TO WIN the game, they had to roll the dice early with their substitution, and bring on another fast running player ( Matt White) and really take it up to Geelong by replacing Miller who was only attracting a 3-4 defender ( supposedly Geelong preferred the ball in his hands) and doing little defensively. He said it was risky to utilize your sub so early, but sometimes when the game is there to be won, you have to take risks, and the risk was mitigated by its' corrective nature, structure wise, and the fact it would be a HUGE WIN for Richmond, announce their arrival, and kick -start their season. All sound points . All hard to argue with . He argued that our run and carry was the main reason we were in a position to really put a break on geelong, and we should be at that point in time looking to put them under as much perceivable pressure as possible. Put it down to experience/ knowledge/ imagination, but I sometimes think Dimmas' gameday coaching is a little too reactive - and even then, too slow - rather than proactive. He questions the boys' ability to win games, but I question his.

I would love to have MM in the box like Thompson @ the Bombers,

I know it's an easier call to be made from the comfort of a commentary box, but it was instinctive, and I suspect correct.

I agree with Micky, I was surprised at the time we subbed a small when we did bring on White.
