Steve Morris F/S

Balmey confirmed that there is a selection panel so decisions are made jointly. If there is a deadlock Dimma gets the final call.

At least that's the public position. For people who put a lot of stock in public positions, keep in mind that our public position on game plan this year is "just let them play" which of course is total BS.

Collingwood, for some years, seemed to drop one to four win or lose. Rarely unchanged. I can't remember if the Cats were like this under Balme but the minute he arrived at Richmond *smile* got dropped.

I put the change in policy down to Balme.

I like a lot of the consequences of this:

Everybody has to be ready to play firsts. (Preparedness.)
Nobody is indispensable. (Indispensability creates smelly complacency.)
Everybody can play ones if their form is right. (Better reserves form.)
There is no established elite. (Smelly complacency. Smelly cliques. Nepotism.)

I don't know if Morris had to be promoted but he definitely had to be dropped.

Yes, the days of favourites seem to be over. Even if you are "good for structure" you'll get dropped if you stink it up too much. Will be interesting to see if the Morris experiment was a one-off hark back to the bad ol' days or if it's repeated, hopefully not. Morris's form in the VFL was good, but you know what you are going to get with Stevie and it's not good enough for seniors. Hunt similar.

So you acknowledge Dimma has played "favourites" prior to now?

Well that's absolutely clear. Every coach has favourites just like every fan has a whipping boy. Sometimes the two even coincide.

If you read back to last year you'll see I supported Morris being dropped, and he was. Dimma's loyal, but even he will drop his favourites like Morris and Ty eventually.

So maybe Morris was a favourite last week but not this week. Why was Morris selected in the first place?

I reckon they were playing the emotional return card

You'd have to ask the selection committee. But the good news is that if "experiments" like this don't work, they rack 'em up again and try something else rather than persisting with a proven failure.

I was sure the experiment of playing Morris as a defensive forward was already a proven failure. Just give it one more go hey, and make him first emergency for the next game.

Certainly was emotional for supporters by halfway into the 2nd quarter. I felt nothing emotional about his return until then.

Well sometimes when you experiment and it fails you have to try the experiment again....just to make sure it's a proven failure. And then one more time just to be sure.....

I refer you to the selection committee on that. But like I say, team selections this year have been pretty exciting mostly haven't they TL?

Certainly, up until last week. Hopefully last week was an aberration and a weak moment by our coaching panel/selection committee and it won't happen again.

Regardless of where I stand on his selection I like Steve Morris.
I like that he gives 100%.
I like that his Dad played for the club. I love that he's absolutely invested in the club.
He's a strong individual & strikes me as a great fella.

calling someone a whipping boy suggests that they have been unfairly maligned.

Events have shown that Morris was very fairly maligned! ;D

Correct.
Then you have to repeat it year after year after year.
And when the same old failures keep on repeating themselves you don't stop.
That's when you extend contracts.
And then you hear Benny Gale say,
"All the indicators looked good".(bout Hardwick)
Then all things become obvious.
Like the upper echelons have NFI.
