Just a reminder of how Morry was playing the week before he did his knee.

As typed up nearly a year go and since when he has not played AFL footy...

Relevance?

We should dredge up the 4 million posts bagging Steve. :)

yes he did have 3 or 4 good weeks before his injury - i really felt for him actually.
not in our best 22 but willing to watch him give it his best.
our coaching staff knows more than us.

is he in in?

The thread title has a typo.

Morris has been sensational in the two's, his attitude, leadership, and work ethic are amongst the best at the club. That's why he keeps getting in the frame for selection.

My concern is that we have struggled at times with two things. Cleanness in the contest, and getting the ball out the backline. Both were significant deficiencies against Melbourne.

At best, Morris doesn't address these, at worst, he exacerbates them.

Why oh why? He's 28 now, he's not the future. Great of him to ressurect himself from a serious injury and kudos to him for that but he was a fringe player then, with the growth of our younger guys why is he still being considered?

As a rule, when you're in the top 4 you don't look at 28 year olds with that mentality.

Disagree. Any top club, at this stage of the season, would look to be giving experience to a potential tier of young players over a 28yo fringe player coming off a knee reconstruction.

The age factor is independent of the injury factor and the Morris factor. Only bottom 4 teams exclude 28 year olds on the basis of age, not young teams sitting at 5 - 0.

You could say he shouldn't be selected due to a lack of talent, or a lack of composure, or he has poor attacking instincts, or he needs to learn to kick, or handball, or mark, or maybe he can't find enough ball, or when he does he kicks it out of bounds, or gives away too many free kicks, or sometimes helps the opposition more than he helps us - but he shouldn't face a barrier to selection from being 28.

Of course he should. I never implied age is the only factor. I have not said we shouldn't be giving games to Grigg, Reiwoldt, Rance. Are you telling me that having had the opportunities he has had being on the list for 6 years recruited as a 23yo and shown to be a fringe player, that this shouldn't be more of a barrier than if he was 22yo, on the list for only a couple of years and not had the opportunity yet to prove himself at AFL level? We're not talking about a top 10 player who is 28yo we are talking about a player who has for long periods of time been unable to perform at an adequate level and a fringe player at a middle of the road club (during his playing career).

Just look at the Bulldogs, they bit the bullet and disposed of some much better players than Morris of vintage age. Geelong disposed of guys like Hunt and Varcoe. The list goes on. The luxury the best teams have is being able to introduce young players into the mix as they are more strongly supported by good players. Sure if you don't have those ready young players you are forced to keep playing the Morris's to save face but we have the youngsters coming through; Eliis, Garthwaite, Menadue, Shai, Markov, Stengle, even Townsend at 23yo. I don't think it's wise to have a Morris taking the place of other younger players when there is no future for him. Been gifted far too many games over his career, not sure why he is deserving of special treatment again. Harsh but the realities of top-grade footy.

Age becomes more relevant with decreasing output of the individual, and the team, I agree.

But hypothetically, if someone is a 28yo and the 22nd best player on a young list going at 5 - 0, then his age alone should not be a barrier to selection.

I think you are saying you would like to exclude him on the basis that he is not the 22nd best player available, which is a different argument altogether.

If you're saying a young, top 4 team should not play anyone above the age of 27 unless they're a top 15 player, or a top 10 player, then that's a separate argument too, and one that depends on the average age of the list and the abundance of talent in that position. Neither work against Morris IMO. Of the players outside the current team, you've listed an 18yo key defender, 2 teen small forwards, and Townsend. In theory, age shouldn't place any of them above a 22nd best player at age 28, in a different position and a young team, unless they're a better option on merit regardless of age.

The argument to exclude Morris right now would be to say he's not the 22nd best player available. We need to think like a top 4 team when it comes to selection until we are no longer a chance to finish top 4. Performance all the way. Long season. Give kids a look against easy opposition, not against the ladder leaders for a selection designed to curb Eddie Betts.

Can't see where he will play. No longer required up forward (not that he ever was) and I would think Betts will tear him a new one first up from a spell.
