Steve Morris F/S

Morris is just not an AFL player sadly, he had a breakout year because the opposition had never seen a bloke run so furiously at a contest making helicopter noises before, so it caught people by surprise, but now that teams know what those odd noises are they are able to negate the human helicopter by moving aside and kicking or hand passing the ball directly at him, once the ball is in his personal space they are a sure thing to get it back.

Would prefer Taylor Hunt.

Would prefer Taylor Hunt's mum to be honest.

Need to stop getting picked.

Doesn't get to the contest in time to put any real pressure. All his pressure is implied. 4 possessions. No impact. Thanks Steve but make way.

who plays backline? as it was we played one backman short last night, so played Ellis there for 3/4s before moving McIntosh there. If Morris is dropped it has to be for a backman.
Hunt or Chaplin?

Love it great post Jamo.

Having watched the replay again, he's actually pretty funny to watch. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a more confused footballer.

Anyone who can amass more than 1 kick will do.

About the best thing I saw from Morris the other night was him furiously running to the bench. What was good about was I knew that he was going off the ground for a spell, so was unlikely to make any costly mistakes sitting on the bench.

dunno. i dont mind a backman who can defend.

i know most on here will never think of Morris as anything but a joke, but as a backman he did the job of beating his opponent this week. if Grimes is going to play as the '3rd tall' this year we will need a 'small' who can play on the likes of Betts, Ballantyne, Rioli etc. Morris may just be our best for that role.
I would be happy to see Morris play the year in the VFL, but if he does it can only be to be replaced by Hunt, or Batchelor IMO.

Didn't need to play.

This has always been Dimma's problem - he always needs to have a buck each way.

Once he learns to trust in the group's natural attacking talent, we will start winning by big margins.

I love backmen who can defend. But you can't afford to carry players in today's game who can only get 1 kick. Sure you have to defend but you also have to provide an option when it counts otherwise you play effectively a man down. Morris has had far too many 1 kick games. And that's because he doesn't know where to go. As many have said he is often 1 step behind the action.

Sounds like you would have been a fan of the likes of Bullus & Mcguane.

Unfortunately, we don't have many options as a small defender and Batch cannot play on the best small forwards. As you suggest Hunt may be the better option.

There would be very few pure stoppers in the AFL these days.

It has to put pressure on the other players to effectively be a man down when we have the ball

Bullus was a much better player than McGuane or Morris

Agree he was a "better" player, but not much more than a stopper. Averaged less than 10 possessions a game.
State of origin player.... The other two mentioned wouldn't make a 5th or 6th 18 at origin level.

Surely this long-term experiment is done and dusted.
Simply no place for Morris in the best 22, in my opinion.
The 2nd best 22?
