State League Recruits

I have absolutely no idea. I'm just some schmuck who posts some of his thoughts on an internet forum whenever work gets too boring, not the second coming of Graeme Richmond. The experts can make those calls.

And we're all the same TOT

comment of the year...

Yeah, but in another draft those two picks could have been Rioli and Taylor. That's the gamble. Good teams are built on good draft picks and the only way to achieve sustained success is to embrace the draft by trying to maximise the number of premium picks you have.

Its still a bit of a lottery though disco.. some you win some you lose.

My concern is whether we even have a scout over here looking at these guys.
We do have a scout over in WA. Jackson has mentioned it a few times before at the Club80 dinners.

I am pretty sure we have Victoria, South Aust and W.A. well covered by our recruiters. Not sure on the remaining states though.

Well, there you go. I'd take the good player every time, given the quality of our list at the time.

There is actually no rule in the AFL that says Richmond should never recruit a good player.

How many players of the standard of Darren Jolly do you need before you can call yourself a good team? Ten, twelve, fifteen?

If it is 12 and your recruit one, you are 8.5% of the way there!
Darren Jolly was not a star when traded by the Dees.
He was not even getting a game every week at Melbourne.
He was a risk that paid off.

Blackwell is one that I would take post 50.

I think we are better equipped for WAFL scouting.

Who else do you like Streaker?

I follow Claremont as much as I can, so I know the most about their players.

Claremont

Blackwell will definately get picked up, but not by us. If Dimma is true to his mantra of recruiting guys who can kick, then Blackwell is a pass. The only knock on him I would have is that he is not a good kick.

Wilkes is an Albany boy, and I have heard it from a very reliable source that he is likely to go to GWS if no one else nabs him. He would be worth a look at for us if available very very late, but would only be a stop gap.

Alroy Gilligan will surely get a spot on a list. Been playing very well, and looks to have put on a bit of muscle.

Kane Mitchell is another who probably should get a chance, but at 174cm might be considered too small. Really hard running and hard at it midfielder with good disposal and can kick goals.

The Claremont bloke I reckon we should have a look at is Tom Lee. Originally he was drafted by Adelaide at pick 60 in 2008 as an athletic forward. Was definately a longer term prospect at the time, and never seemed very settled in Adelaide. From what I have heard, needed to do some growing up. Delisted and came back to WA this year. Claremont have him listed at 194cm and weighing 96 kgs. Very quick for a bloke his size and with good hands, and has certainly improved his kicking. I'd actually recruit him as a defender, I reckon he could play back quite nicely. Certainly the type of bloke I'd rather have on the rookie list than Brad Miller.

But there are certainly others available. Some of the others I think could make it to AFL level include

Aaron Elari from Perth. Bit small again (around 170cm I think), although plays as a small forward so maybe that can be forgiven. Tough nut type in the Jake King style, but a better open field kick. Very quick mover, with low centre of gravity and very nippy.

Ryan Cook at South Fremantle. The ex-Colliongwood player best known for his involvement in the fracas at Pendlebury's 21st in Sale. Too good for WAFL level, and with good pace and endurance, will surely find a home somewhere else. Most likely WAFL player to make it onto an AFL list IMO.

Haydn Busher from Perth. Real smokey. Played mainly as a CHB as a junior and at U18 State level, but has been a fairly handy forward for Perth this year. Only 191 cm tall, not great for a KPP, but a very solid, consistent player.

Good to hear.

Hope we're scouting them thoroughly.

The 12 changes leysy hoped for is starting to look on the lean side.

Why does it sound so easy and our football club make it seem so hard?

it is fairly easy - it just takes stamina. You've just got to keep plugging away and a Barlow will eventually pop up.

We don't plug away.

Streaker, what do you think of Reece Adams from South Freo?

I hear good things about Matt Suckling and Luke Brown of Norwood. Anyone know of them?

Suckling, in that same draft year as Cotchin is a hard at it inside mid with good skills.
Do remember Suckling was hard at it & also some confusion at the draft with the Hawks.

yeah, he was the 'other' Matt Suckling and i think he thought he was drafted when Hawthorn drafted their Suckling...or something like that.

Matt Suckling from the hawks is doing well so I think they would be happy that everything got sorted out.

Wouldn't mind another left footer in the backline.

Sam Dwyer is a player I would be looking at for a rookie list spot. Liked what I saw again today. 2 years ago he was playing very good footy before being struck down with a knee injury.

Watched the Port Vs Willy game.3 players i hope we look at.
Callum Sinclair-200cm,96kg..Very mobile for a big man.Played up fwd and had an impact,Mobile enough to play CHB/Ruck.
Malcom Lynch-An upgrade on Hicks,Would love the open spaces of the G
Batsanis-Reminds me of a Nathen Foley, uses the ball to advantage inparticular by hand.

Sinclair would be a very good upgrade on Westhoff.

Not seen a lot of him Scoop. He has not played a lot of games since his debut in 2008 (I think?)

He is very quick, but has suffered some hamstring injurie in the past so you'd want to do a medical. Played very few games last year after suffering a really bad hamstring tear.

Tomorrow I watch a guy who is exactly who we should look at in David Mirra of Box Hill. A 20 year old guy with great skill, reading of play and poise. A guy we should draft without battering an eyelid. Not only of talent, but mental strenght to get himself to this position of being draftable.

Got Bob's quote from another thread. David Mirra is someone who I am a huge wrap for.

Did some research on him and here is the rub. Is a Mazenod College boy who a teenager was a little bit mouthy and looking to get his shirt off at any excuse and was in love with the man in the mirror. Always had talent and a great footballing brain but just didn't apply himself. Went to Box Hill and over the last two years has turned his football around and more importantly his attitude. Now doing every thing to get better, is always doing extra at Box Hill and has become a leader. As a footballer, as Bob says he is a great reader of the play and gets to the right spot. Very good at putting himself in the dangerous spot as a defender and plugging gaps. Having said there he is also very good body on body and wins his own football. The small defender role with rebound is the role he would play. Mirra kept Ahmed Saad very quiet in the VFL this year and has tagged other AFL listed players for a win. I would call his kicking neat and tidy but damaging. He might not kick the cover off it but he picks the right options so his kicking is a weapon. The people at Box Hill think he will be on a AFL list in some form.

Also, the Hawks are spewing on Cunrow and Pederson not being at Waverly Park. The club knew both were good enough and the football department wanted both with any picks after 50 in the draft. But Pelchen assured the coaches that they would get both in the rookie list and outsmart everyone. Didn't work out that way and it was a major black mark in the Pelchen black book.
