State League Recruits

Waylen Manson now playing for the Waratahs in Darwin (alongside Fev this weekend.) he kicked 8 goals last week.
it will be interesting if/where he gets drafted.

He's the sort of guy that would struggle with a move to Melbourne in particular and with the demands of AFL football.

yeah, probably a guy a perth team will be most willing to take the risk on.

Don't know how accurate this is but in his interview he may have said he likes to go hunting in the outback for a few days at a time. :hihi

Manson kicked 10 goals today, alongside Fev who kicked 8.

if he keeps up this form, I wonder if GWS might take the chance early?

He's kicked 28 goals from 3 games. He's quite impressive.

man another 10 from Manson, was it a blow out or a close game?

I wonder if we (or other teams) are starting to think bout him for a late first/early 2nd rounder
GWS could pull the trigger even earlier

Blow out at the end. Fev kicked five of his eight goals in the last quarter.

I'm thinking he will go late in the draft or as a rookie. Could be a good pick up though.

Mark Hutchings would be a solid addition. He was on the Saints rookie list and had a good season this year. His state testings were pretty good. Well worth a look at.

Has he learnt to kick yet Gussy? I saw he improved his speed dramatically so he's been working hard.

Personally hope we load up using the state leagues. Picking guys who are 19-23 and playing against men. Not all will come off but if we can snare 1 or 2 good players out of it then its worth the punt. Id imagine we'd go the standard path of 2 juniors with our 2 first rounders then pick 55 id like to use on a mature-ager. Same deal with a PSD pick (which i hope we end up with one after final list lodgment)

Then load up on mature age players in the draft. I've watched a fair bit (biased towards SA/Vic) and this is what i have come up with based on what may be available at each pick (not just picked all the guns out of it :hihi)

Would some of our draft experts be happy with an overall draft that looked like this?

National Draft

15: Hayden Crozier (Eastern Ranges - HFF/Wing)
Ht: 185cm Wt: 68kg Age: 17
I know i got shut down for this selection by some on another thread but we need a game-winning smaller forward type and I'm going on the presumption that all the top level mids (such as Kavanagh/Adams) are gone. Can play as a highly skilled wingman long-term but could see him being a sub/small forward to start with. Is quick and despite popular opinion his endurance is already pretty good. Nearly averaged 19 disposals in the TAC Cup this year

26: Alex Forster (Norwood - Midfielder/Defender)
Ht: 189cm Wt: 81kg Age: 17
Think Forster can become a midfielder/utility long term but will start as a HBF. Already has some runs on the board against men playing for Norwood. His senior form is better than Grigg FWIW. Grigg had a better champs though. His foot skills off both feet are very good-elite and could probably take Deledio's spot down back if Hardwick wants to.

55: Tom Sundberg (Collingwood VFL - Midfielder)
Ht: 183cm Wt: 83kg Age: 23
Sundberg won the Collingwood reserves B&F this season. Powerful runner who reminds me a bit of Swan (not as good) but just endurance wise he is very good at VFL level. Also been compared to Paul Licuria. Very good left foot as well for a guy who wins a lot of inside/contested ball. Of all the mature-agers available IMO this guy is the one who could be a very good AFL player. Averaged nearly 24 disposals in VFL, half of which were contested and over 6 tackles per game (best in Collingwood VFL team) In the Pies best in all but 2 games this season and averaged nearly 1 goal per game. Would put alot of pressure on guys like Grigg/Jackson and the added advantage he would know the Collingwood game style. ;D

Pre-Season Draft

7: Brayden O'Hara (Central Districts - HBF/Wing)
Ht: 183cm Wt: 82kg Age: 24
A mature ager from the SANFL. Another elite user of the ball and would be very close to playing round 1 as a back-flanker or wingman. 24 years of age soon and would allow Houli/Deledio to push further up the field and also be replacement for Newman who may have 2-3 more years left and as we should be challenging by then i'd be happy having a 26-27 year old playing in a finals series than a 20 year old in his early days.

Highlights from 2009 (unfortunately only have full matches for this year): http://bigpondvideo.com/AFL/219045

Rookie Draft

7: Tom Lee (Claremont - CHB)
Ht: 194cm Wt: 94kg Age: 21
Bit of a tall utility who is best suited to being an aggressive KPD who can run off his man. Pretty sound defensively and can take a grab. Has the added advantage that he is versatile enough to go forward. Was recruited to Adelaide as a KPF and was only about 191cm and a bit immature. Still a bit of a project but is a super athlete, lightning quick, big leap and good endurance.

25: Willie Wheeler (Coburg - Midfielder)
Ht: 176cm Wt: 75kg Age: 19
Very clean, one touch inside midfielder. Not really mature age as he's only 19. Presume he was overlooked last year because of his size (or lack thereof) but has been very good for our VFL affiliate and has been right under our noses all year so we'd be in a very good position to judge him. Another good clearance player and can tackle for a small bloke. Ave. 25 disposals in VFL.

43: Daniel Garside (St.Bedes/Mentone VAFA - Defender)
Ht: 187cm Wt: 83kg Age: 19
Bit of a roughie this kid and have only seen his highlights and read what others have seen of him but a rumour on BF that we are very keen to rookie him so thought i'd put him in for discussion for other who may have seen him? Plays as a lock-down defender in the VAFA. Has a sprinting background so is lightning quick. Only 19 years old so was from last year's draft class. Is a superb kick of the footy and is already a VC of the seniors at his club. So fits the character/kicking profile we look for. Only concern (from what i've read) is when his team has the ball he is still minding his man instead of trying to get the ball (bit like Thursfield) where he'd be a real weapon with his kicking (not like Thursty :hihi).

Highlights from his 2011 VAFA Season: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGiDKSWVvmM

61: Mat Suckling (Norwod - Midfielder)
Ht: 182cm Wt: 82kg?? Age: 22
Bit of talk earlier in the thread about him thinking he was drafted one year and another thread where Phantom says we were keen in 2008. Another inside midfielder who is a very good kick of the pill. Very good contested player and in fact i think he led the SANFL for clearances (an area we battle in) Is super fit and can run all day which is what we would want in an inside midfielder. Was at Port Melbourne in 2010 so has played for 2 very good state-league sides and done well. Kicking efficiency over 75% this year.

Highlights of his contested/clearance ability: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjzG_hiTGJs
Highlights of his kicking skills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyE-O0ZXfiE

79: Aaron Hall (Hobart - Midfielder/HFF)
Ht: 186cm Wt: 82kg Age: 20?
Have only seen this kids highlights and he has some very good AFL traits. He is super quick, good size midfielder/forward. Very good kick of the footy and has that bit of x-factor around goals. Can also take a strong contested grab which will allow him to play as a medium forward and midfielder. Can really break the lines.

Highlights of 2011: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMi3V_VCQBY

97: Ben Gazzola (Norwood - KPF/Ruck)
Ht: 194cm Wt: 87kg Age: 21
Big KPF who can pinch-hit in the ruck. Was an ex-basketballer who has a pretty good aerobic capacity, a good mark and has a big leap on him. Would rather have a bloke like this developing than someone like Westhoff. My only concern is at AFL he could be that James Sellar in between KPF/Ruck type. More athletic than Sellar though. Worth a punt in the rookie draft.

All I could find was his Goal of the Day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gma9JRUBgw

115: John Heslin (Ireland)
Ht: 189cm Wt: 92kg? Age: 19?
Our Irish recruit who we already are committed to taking in the rookie draft with our last pick.

Ignore the rookie draft numbers because no other teams will be taking 7 picks in it so each pick will be lower than that, just no idea what they will be.

Not getting excited by Suckling by any means ( and I know it was low pressure SANFL) but it's good to see someone kick the ball properly. Kicks didnt go over the intendeds head or bounce 5 m in front of or to the side. He also kicked it out in front of the the intended allowing the intended to run into it ( rather than kicking it to him where he WAS which meant it goes over his head)

Beautiful kick of the footy. Especially when you combine it with his inside work and his hard running to get to contests. Interesting neither him nor O'Hara got an invite to state screening. O'Hara may be more of a mature-age rookie option.

Will watch with great interest where Aaron Hall ends up - likely pick up somewhere given the year it is.

Nioce work by the way Tigi :clap

Interesting to see Wheeler's listed as 3 cm taller than King & Nahas. The way people have been talking, thought he must've been knee-high to Mila Kunis.

You know how some players play tall.............................?

would rather draft genuine mids who can be used on the hff or wing, not the other way around.
