Recruit to play forward as well.
Can't see him taking a mark any time soon.

Come on mate, give him a break his only 2 metres tall and 100kg, how do you expect him to take mark?
He couldn't mark a beach ball.
Worse trade since Fleming.
Carlton do not loose good players

Trade?? :hihi
Pretty sure we traded one of our picks for him, trading a pick or a player to me there's no difference. We still had to pay something to get him, unlike a free agent.

He was delisted by the Blooze.

Last year Hampson was ranked 40 in the league for average hitouts per game.
of the guys who averaged more, 1 (Pyke) averaged more contested marks, and 3 ( McEvoy, Jolly and Cox) averaged more marks. none averaged more marks I50 per game (he was ranked 31 in the league).

he aint no superstar but last year he wasnt a terrible mark (admittedly from a small sample). he figures from the year before were similar.
this year before injury he averaged 13.5 disposals. since injury 6.

against the pies, and particularly the lions he stank around the ground but his ruckwork was good.
against the hawks i thought he stank around the ground, and his ruckwork was no better.

i doubt they will drop him this week, but he would want to start to improve to hold his place.

thanks Brodders, those stats and your analysis back up my own impression. He was an OK mark at Carlton, I saw it with my own eyes, wasn't fantastic, but not bad. Took the odd very good mark and was solid on the bread and butter stuff. (Likewise on his link up play, which was fine but is now terrible) This year he doesn't look like taking a mark. As Bulluss said we drafted him thinking he'll at least maintain and hopefully improve. For whatever reason hasn't happened. He was never a super fluid mover but he wasn't bad for his size and he's definately more robotic this year.

The lack of confidence with his marking has spread to the other players as he made 2 legitimate leads that were ignored both because I reckon the players just weren't trusting him to mark the ball. One was Newwy on the wing in the last qtr when Hammer made a decent lead on the half forward line in space and Chris just ignored him.

He got plenty of hit-outs but very little around the grounds.

It doesn't matter why he's failed for the last three weeks but he has. Hampson has a talent that has not failed in that time - he can make space for a clean tap.

But he is a bludger after that. Can he mark? That can be form.

He's very fast and strong. Does he chase? Does he tackle? Nup.

Shaun Hampson is a little bit too important to play football for Richmond. Could learn a lot from Griffo.

I think you'll find he often played as a semi-permanent key forward last year (he only ave 11.7 hitouts per game in 2013) as he did in 2012 (where he ave 18.5 hitout per game). This would help explain why he took more marks than some other ruckman and also why he took more I50 marks (because he played there more often). In 2012 & 2013 he almost doubles his ave marks per game as against all other years in his career.

he is showing some good signs as a pure ruckman but agree he needs to do more to hold his place.

Disagree that he was terrible against Brisbane, 52 hit outs with 37% being to our advantage are hardly numbers to scoff at. Granted, he's been spilling gettable marks but I'll put this down to confidence, his form in the first couple of games were good, I expect him to bounce back strongly this week.

Its easy to look crappy and down in confidence, in a side that is down in confidence and playing crappy. The inverse is true also IMO.

Sure The Hammer's velvet is a little scratchy lately, but the fact remains he was relatively cheap for a ruckman and hes shown that, at worst, hes pretty good ruckman insurance for the next 5 years.
