I actually don't see how that's going to work.

Hampson is useless anywhere other than the ruck. Has the worst coordination in the afl, butter fingers and drops every mark that comes his way. So crap around the ground and up forward. What happens when Maric is in the ruck?

We paid way overs for him.

A second rounder for what seems to be an injury prone Trent Knobel clone. Away from ruck we are effectively a player down. Agreed we paid far too much.

Was a little fumbly but his intensity was first rate.

Ground level pressure acts were elite for such a big man.

Stout hearted last night.
I thought that too and it was noted by the guys on Fox in their post game wrap up too. If he could just learn to mark the ball he'd become a lot more valuable. Does anyone know who was picked up with the pick we used for him and what their prospects are?

Is certainly not going to just explode into a player like Maric did. Weak overhead and at the hips so doesn't hold his ground enough. And he's not getting to enough contests to break even. The tap work is the obvious strong point, but I wasn't overly impressed with that either v Bris. Kicking...worse than meh. But yeah unfortunately he seems to be doing the best he can.

While getting plenty of hitouts, too many favoured the opposition.

His marking is dreadful - whether it's his eyesight or he's just unco. Have to better than that to have a long term future.

Message to Vickery should be if he wants his spot back, it has to be as a ruckman.

We looked better when Griffiths rucked last night.
Agree with this. However, having heard that his father dies during the week we should cut him some slack. That's huge that he still played considering those circumstances.

Hawthorn get tough and get mccavoy....one of the best young gun ruck men around
We go all conservative and fiddle around and go for hampton..a second rate..back up ruck for an injury prone,in his final years Maric

Sums up up really

Sad

LOL...watch the replay mate and you'll see PLENTY of taps to advantage from the game. Not his fault our mids didn't take full advantage of it, particularly in the first half and late in the game. Absolutely dominated West, and so he should.

LOL, thanks mate. So you are saying if the mids don't take full advantage of his taps but the opposition consistently manage to, that is still elite eh? Go figure. Putting it down the throat of your mids is what is elite in my book.

Granted it's harder to see each and very ruck contest at the ground, but I can tell you for nothing that what so many of us (100's) sitting in Stanley St end saw was very disillusioning. Didn't hear anyone say "Thank god we had Hampsen, he's elite". Plenty of collective groans though.

BUT as I said, if this guy had a personal hardship through the week, then it's possible to put it to one side. It's not like we had much option but to play him atm.

So you'd have been happy if Richmond gave up their first round draft pick for McEvoy? That's what St Kilda wanted and got from Hawthorn, plus Savage.

I agree, paid well over in my book - but premierships talk and can disguise folly as good fortune.

True and Hawthorn really did need a ruck man. They may regret it in a few years time, but they'll have at least one more trophy in the cabinet by then and we'd probably sell our souls to get just one.

Maric has proven that he can take marks around the ground. Play them both and rest Ivan up forward when Hampson is in the ruck?

I can did say that one of the things he'd like to work on is playing up forward in an interview I heard, but it was his usual laid back style and I almost fell asleep listening to it, so I may have misheard.

he's no superstar, but thats taking the p!ss

Yes, he's younger, fitter and has a girlfriend Trent would actually drool over. But there is a grain of truth here. Your first ruck (and Hampson must be aiming for that) has to be able to relieve pressure and mark your outlet pass what - 25% of the time? Knobel couldn't, Stephenson can't and Hampson isn't.

...and I got pissed off last night watching even two handed taps (i.e. complete control of the ball) go straight to a Brisbane player.

No, some of his taps went to the wrong spots i.e when in your defensive half the general rule is you tap towards the boundary unless you know the ball will land where we have more than a 50-50 chance of roving it. On numerous occasions he tapped inside to no-one in particular and often Brisbane roved it. A better team than Brisbane (there are about 17 in the current competition) will make you pay dearly for these errors. If he did it once or twice its forgivable but he did it often throughout the game.

Without reading the last few pages what i saw from Hampson on last nights game i wasn't overly impressed with his tap work which mainly went to lions players and he couldn't mark a ball to save himself...Butter fingers, just so fumbly on first contact with ball whether in the air or a lose ball...
One thing hampster doesn't give us is that get out of jail card that maric can give us around the ground with his strength in the air and bollocking work around the stoppages.........

Apart from jumping off the ground at ruck contests, and sometimes hitting the ball to the advantage of Tiger players, Hampson offers absolutely nothing else to the team. He contributes so little around the ground, hardly competes, applies no physical pressure in packs and doesn't put his body on the line or shepherd. Not sure what sort of long-term value this player will be for the Tigers.

Actually thought with the No. 1 mantle he would have been great value.
Really disappointed in his output around the ground and only better than the O due to athleticism.
