Agreed.

For one, think Maric is going to find it extremely hard to recover from his groin issues. And two, it is Hampsons best position, the new ruck rules suit him to a tee plus he is no good up forward.

iVan as a floating ruck/tall forward and back is a pretty effective weapon

Ruckmen that can convert to playing as forwards or defenders, especially at Ivy's age are as rare as hens teeth. Barely recall one in the past 30 years. History says it wont work.

If all stay fit leysy can see either him or Hampson being pushed out as the season wears on. At the very least leysy expects one to be sub nearly every week with TV pushing up to do some relief ruckwork late in games.

If injury does hit one though, the other will be worth the weight in gold.

Didn't Ivan want him at Tigerland?
That's the mark of the man when you want a bloke that could take your spot for the benefit of making the team stronger.

I think Ivan's role is pretty safe barring injury though.

We'll need both of them going into the Granny...

The thing about Hampson is he doesn't have to be a superstar, he rounds out our forward line and gives Maric and excellent chop out. Have a look at his stats on AFL footy wire (?). Averages as many contested marks as Jack R over the last two years and is a better ruck than Vickery.
So in my eyes, all he has to do is be competitive in the guts ( which he is) and allow Vickery to become our second forward. Hammer actually brings others into the game.
He's a good problem to have in my eyes.

we got him for a reason & barring injury Hampson/Maric will both play each game unless rested. with the interchange cap in place they'll both ruck and instead of going to the bench will rest fwd instead/rotating with the other. thats how i see it working. with another rule change working in thier fav, the relaxing of 1 on 1 marking contests work work in thier favour as they are bigger boddied than most of thier opponents will be

There is plenty of upside for the Tigers if Hampson has a solid season and I am hoping his recruitment proves to be an inspired selection. Time will tell, of course.

Will give our mids first use of the ball far more than they have had in the past - will surprise many!

According to Champion Data, Hampson is the second best tap to advantage ruckman going around - only Sandilands has a better percentage. This is exactly what we need, Cotch & the crew will be licking their lips at the prospect of regular first use of the pill. Compared to say McEvoy, we've clearly got the best man for the job.

Where did Will Minson, Todd Goldstein, Nic Nat and Sam Jacobs slot in to taps to advantage?

It was on a recent podcast so I'd only be guessing, but I'd say Minson & Goldstein wouldn't be too far behind, somewhere around the high 20's as far as percentage is concerned. From memory, Hampson was 28% or thereabouts, McEvoy around 16%. Sam Jacobs was the next tier down in the low to mid twenties. If someone has the prospectus handy, maybe they could confirm the figures.

It's a hard stat to track down but after a google search I found 3 different articles that state that over the last 3 years the best HTA were Jamar in 2011, Jacobs in 2012 and Minson in 2013.

Here's a podcast featuring CD's Glen Luff re. Hampson.

For a recap of discussions.

- Liam McBean performed exceptionally well at ground level and is clearly in the elite category for a 202cm forward.
- Reece Conca has outperformed the vast majority of pick 6's in his third year and already has a healthy 80 point CD average (not including injury affected matches)
- Shaun Hampson has the second best tap to advantage stats in the league over the past two seasons, with only Sandilands ahead of him.
- Tigers have an exceptional draw and will be pressing hard for a top 4 spot
- Anthony Miles appears to be a very astute selection in the tradition of Moneyball (a reference that Champion Data cheekily like to avoid and replace with their own trademark)
- Lennon looks like another inspired Francis Jackson pick, continuing his outstanding record of first rounders.
