I think some people are underestimating Hampson's rucking potential.
He is huge, with great length and extension and a massive leap.
The problem at Carlton was not that he was "4th in line" as some people claim. It was that out of Warnock, Kreuzer and Hampson (and previously Sam Jacobs) he was better than the others up forward so he rarely got excessive ruck time - cos' the others were crap up forward. When Carlton played all 3 of these guys in the last 2 years he rarely went in the ruck. But in early 2012 Carlton played both Kreuzer and Hampson rotating equally between the Ruck and Deep Forward roles. The problem was, Kreuzer was useless in the forward line and when he got injured in Round 9 they brought back Warnock who played virtually the whole game in the ruck shuffling Hampson back forward for the majority of the game again. However, during those early rounds Hampson was very strong in the ruck and as a tandem with Kreuzer and they were dominating teams in the centre bounces and around the grounds.
That will not happen at Richmond. We will have Vickery, Jack and possibly McBean all playing up forward.
I think Carlton have stuffed up here by trading Hampson instead of Warnock. Now Carlton are left with a tap ruckmen who can't do much else and a potentially powerful follower who will again be sent back forward during games where he has had little success. I think they should have planned around the tandem of Hampson and Kreuzer playing similar roles to how we may with Ivvy and Hampson.
Either way, I see Shaun averaging 25+ hitouts a game for us with Ivy getting 15-20 when they play even ruck time together and would not be surprised at all if he takes Ivy's place as our #1 ruckmen by season's end.
The beauty of all this though is the matchups it causes. If Ty, Shaun and Jack are all in the forward line one of Ty and Shaun will have a ridiculous matchup that they can take to the square (Think Jesse White on Petterd in the Sydney game) or if teams double up on them with talls then Jack gets a 3rd tall spud like Bootsma again who he can obliterate out of the square. Both Ty and Shaun are mobile enough to keep up with a 6ft 2 3rd tall defender and then strong enough overhead to punish them.
The one thing we must be careful of is forward pressure dropping off but the options and flexibility this provides us to take on different defences is very exciting.
