Does Malthouse have a history of letting decent players go?

I can't recall any decent players leaving Collingwood/Eagles and becoming solid players elsewhere (albeit I am operating on limited sleep thanks to sick newborn twins)

paid way overs

Don't understand why we dealt so quickly - got 2 more weeks where we could have waited with our 3rd round offer.

I think some people are underestimating Hampson's rucking potential.
He is huge, with great length and extension and a massive leap.
The problem at Carlton was not that he was "4th in line" as some people claim. It was that out of Warnock, Kreuzer and Hampson (and previously Sam Jacobs) he was better than the others up forward so he rarely got excessive ruck time - cos' the others were crap up forward. When Carlton played all 3 of these guys in the last 2 years he rarely went in the ruck. But in early 2012 Carlton played both Kreuzer and Hampson rotating equally between the Ruck and Deep Forward roles. The problem was, Kreuzer was useless in the forward line and when he got injured in Round 9 they brought back Warnock who played virtually the whole game in the ruck shuffling Hampson back forward for the majority of the game again. However, during those early rounds Hampson was very strong in the ruck and as a tandem with Kreuzer and they were dominating teams in the centre bounces and around the grounds.

That will not happen at Richmond. We will have Vickery, Jack and possibly McBean all playing up forward.

I think Carlton have stuffed up here by trading Hampson instead of Warnock. Now Carlton are left with a tap ruckmen who can't do much else and a potentially powerful follower who will again be sent back forward during games where he has had little success. I think they should have planned around the tandem of Hampson and Kreuzer playing similar roles to how we may with Ivvy and Hampson.

Either way, I see Shaun averaging 25+ hitouts a game for us with Ivy getting 15-20 when they play even ruck time together and would not be surprised at all if he takes Ivy's place as our #1 ruckmen by season's end.

The beauty of all this though is the matchups it causes. If Ty, Shaun and Jack are all in the forward line one of Ty and Shaun will have a ridiculous matchup that they can take to the square (Think Jesse White on Petterd in the Sydney game) or if teams double up on them with talls then Jack gets a 3rd tall spud like Bootsma again who he can obliterate out of the square. Both Ty and Shaun are mobile enough to keep up with a 6ft 2 3rd tall defender and then strong enough overhead to punish them.

The one thing we must be careful of is forward pressure dropping off but the options and flexibility this provides us to take on different defences is very exciting.

Thanks Rosy....for the sake of our own sanity, I hope so too :)

i've been one has has been very strong in suggesting we won't get anything for white... but the AFL will have to give us some form of compo if we lose both white and mguane to free agency

Why? McGuane couldn't get a game and White could only manage sub player most of the time. I'd personally be surprised if we managed a late 2nd rounder as compensation but would also be very grateful if we do.

Seems to me Richmond could've been a bit more creative with what we gave Carlton. His manager affirmed that no one other than Richmond were interested in Hampson, yet we immediately cough up our second pick.

Carlton were probably keen to get him off their books given how many other ruckmen they have ahead of him.

Certainly not one of the better trades we've made in recent times. Just hope he can make himself useful. Nice athletecism but he'll need to improve his marking.

Hard to see where Griff fits in now, a week after he is given a new contract.

Yeah agree mate,

Carlton needed Hampson off the books with Daisy & others coming in.

We would have got a better deal by holding. Even if it meant giving up our 2nd rdr little doubt playing the waiting game would have got us something like Carltons 3rd back.

That would have at least got us a slighter better pick with our 3rd/4th selection or given us some options re: packaging picks off to move up the draft a little.

There is a fair chance we will get a late 2nd round/early 3rd round for Matt White leaving and potentially Luke McGuane. If that is the case, we pick up Hampson and only move back maybe 10 spots in the draft.
Don't let that stop anyone bagging the club. This period is not about the club FFS. It's fan venting time. It's what we do best. ;D

Not sure about holding. They were probably nervous that the Hawthorn deal for Longer may fall through increasing demand for Hampson. As juffaricho stated brilliantly above Hampson is a more established ruck than he currently gets credit for. Play him in position and this may end up being a very astute selection. Here's hoping!! :clap

Juffa fingers crossed that your theory comes in to practise but I think what will transpire is us contemplating giving na early pick for an always injured sub standard player.

Whatever happens, it won't be as bad as trading pick #3 for Strawbs O'Dwyer.

There were some great pieces of ruck work. I read somewhere he was amongst the top ruckman in the league for hits to advantage.

Tried looking for this stat but can't find it. Judging only by the highlights package on the RFC website, he does seem to be a very good tap ruckman. L2RTR - are you able to put up his stats for hit outs to advantage and compare to other ruckman in the league? Thanks in advance if you do manage to put these up.

Another snippet from my carlton mate, an astute follower of the game (if thats not an oxymoron for carlton supporters) is that shaun hampson is in the quickest if not the quickest at the club over 50-100m. Some quick little guys at carlton so not a bad effort.
