OK i have a theory.

It may be possible that FJ and Blair have assessed the draft crop as having maybe 25 top level talents. The rest maybe they believe are all speculative and around even as far as potential goes. So giving up pick 28 (which would end up being like 35) may not lose you a player you actually wanted as they may indeed be available later on.

Crazy but it's not outside the realms of possibility.

I think you have done really well, has had a couple of injuries that has stopped him in his tracks a few times and I am disappointed to lose him for that pick. IF you can keep him on the park and if you can fix his kicking he could be a tower of strength. Also I know you don't have the small forwards, but if you improve there, Hampson gets his hands to everything even if he doesn't clunk it, this gives a big advantage to the smalls.

Honestly is worth a lot more than pick 28 and I would not mind betting this time next year if you run a thread on whether or not you payed overs or got him for unders (if he doesn't do a knee or something), I wouldn't mind betting most will then agree you got him at a bargain price.

Thanks for your balanced perspective.
This succinctly captures why we have done this trade.
Hampson is entering his prime, and if he can get some continuity in his footy, there is some significant room for improvement.
Richmond will certainly give him the opportunity, as we had a real need for a ready to go ruckman NOW.
In context, Carlton will be happy with pick 28, but in the fullness of time I believe Richmond can reap huge value from this trade.

That's what I was thinking maybe they have a player identified already that will get to there next pick anyway maybe it's another recycled player we still have pick 11 which will be a good kid. Should we trade our last pick for Sewell as an inside mid for a few years probably wouldn't happen.

Opportunity at another club can improve a player bigtime..e.g maric.hard for a hampson to show what he can do when the other 2ruckman r being picked in front of him he is a richmond man now so lets just wait and see before we all jump to conclusions about what we think
About the scenario no doubt shuan will be hungry to prove himself worthy to be given another opportunity

Seems to me Richmond could've been a bit more creative with what we gave Carlton. His manager affirmed that no one other than Richmond were interested in Hampson, yet we immediately cough up our second pick.

There is a fair chance we will get a late 2nd round/early 3rd round for Matt White leaving and potentially Luke McGuane. If that is the case, we pick up Hampson and only move back maybe 10 spots in the draft.

After reading through this thread, sitting back and taking a few deep breaths, i've now realised the sky isn't falling. This trade is starting to grow on me.
I've spoken to a few carlton supporters ( gone home, showered and re brushed my teeth) and they aren't dismissive of the trade either, certainly not laughing.
We've identified a real need for next year, assessed the options, weighed up the possibilities and got on with the job of filling the need.
I'm liking the look of the structure we're aiming at, as far as i can tell.

Carlton were probably keen to get him off their books given how many other ruckmen they have ahead of him.

Certainly not one of the better trades we've made in recent times. Just hope he can make himself useful. Nice athletecism but he'll need to improve his marking.

Hard to see where Griff fits in now, a week after he is given a new contract.

It is bemusing.

Carlton probably laughing all the way to the bank. No other interest = 3rd at best.

I personally think the deal as it stands is good for both sides, but if it ends up being Hampster for a 10 spot move, which looks likely, thats a steal for us, still a good deal for Carlton because the subsequent compo makes no difference to them. Smart

Was it round one this year that he clunked everything coming his way??. Only to let his kicking let him down. Will fit right in.

At least he'll be a good mark at training against his opponent. Loves playing against Tigers, took 4 contested and 8 marks in total against us in round 1.

I knew it, Gale is still mates with AD.
Why arent we going after Adams??

Quite true, but it was only for a year. I'd say the club is looking at only one of these guys going into 2015, and is giving both the opportunity to grab that spot.

I'm cool with that.

if we get the same mileage out of Hampson as we have got out of Grigg, Houli, Maric etc etc the fat Tiger lady will not be singing but laughing all the way to the bank.

And this is what makes me nervous… the club has done reasonably well with filling holes on our list by trading in the past few years. But that doesn't mean we need to continue to trade for the sake of trading - so people like blair hartley can justify their existance - which is what getting hampson feels like for mine. Trading can be hit or miss and eventually we're gonna miss. Hampson was 4th in line at carlton (behind casbolt FFS). The only thing going for hampson is that he's 24 and about to hit his peak as a ruckman... but apart from that he has absolutely nothing else going for him and it's a complete waste of a valuable draft pick IMO.

Trading for the sake of trading ala Greg Miller is what it seemed like to me, too. I haven't seen much from Hampson in his time at the Blues, but the real concern is the history of injury.

His marking has improved. Very mobile for his size and does well in the ruck contests.
Kicking needs a lot of work.

The big issue is, can he play a full season without breaking down?

Consensus around here appears to be that we will not get compensation picks for either McGuane or White, but I will bow to your superior inside knowledge on this matter.

I'll be wrapt to get picked under 45 for either one, and as you say would ease the pain somewhat.

sorry if its already been discussed, but is there any mechanism for negotiation/ flexibility? I'm thinking a sub-40 pick for both would be thereabouts, could even be a bit better depending on White's contract in particular.

i've been one has has been very strong in suggesting we won't get anything for white... but the AFL will have to give us some form of compo if we lose both white and mguane to free agency

Richardson was mentioning late second rounder to early third for Luke and Matt on afl trade radio

Struggling to find it now - was pre coffee - maybe I was dreaming
