Bill James said:Ladder position is not my argument never has been, neither was 2014 for that matter, but happy to revisit hitouts vs clearances at the end if the year. Here is a simple one dimensional question for you. Would you replace a fit Nank with a fit Hampster?
OK, Bill, I'll give you an honest answer, as I see it. You can only say Nankervis ATM because he is the only one fit. But it's hard for me to respond exactly to how you frame it - hitouts vs clearances - as I don't expect just the ruckman to win the clearances. That's one of the main functions of the whole midfield group.
However, Nank will, and does, follow up more than Hammer to influence secondary clearances. Hammer contributes more by sheer HO wins which can make a vital difference if our mids win enough of them. In the PA JLT game, from memory Q2, they started to get back into it when Ryder got on top in HOs, getting the ball to go their way. However, Nank beat him still, especially around the ground. Next PA game, Ryder starred, might have been getting back into form.
I think Nank may struggle against some of the huge and skilful rucks who may beat him well in the HOs, marks and equal him in the follow-up work (e.g. Gawn, Mummy, perhaps Goldstein) but he will fight hard. Major point - I think there will be some games we could use both him and Hampson, assuming he can recover full match fitness. Both Norf and Dees are considering playing two giants as I've commented on elsewhere. Some teams already play 2/3 rucks - Cats, Hawks, Pies, Swans. If Nank is our only man, they will double-team and grind him down especially by the vital Q4. Want Griff tp play far more CHF in support of JR.
Nank is our only decent ruck option at present but he will need support over this year. If not Hampson, otherwise Chol or Soldo have to come on fast.
