Ladder position is not my argument never has been, neither was 2014 for that matter, but happy to revisit hitouts vs clearances at the end if the year. Here is a simple one dimensional question for you. Would you replace a fit Nank with a fit Hampster?

OK, Bill, I'll give you an honest answer, as I see it. You can only say Nankervis ATM because he is the only one fit. But it's hard for me to respond exactly to how you frame it - hitouts vs clearances - as I don't expect just the ruckman to win the clearances. That's one of the main functions of the whole midfield group.

However, Nank will, and does, follow up more than Hammer to influence secondary clearances. Hammer contributes more by sheer HO wins which can make a vital difference if our mids win enough of them. In the PA JLT game, from memory Q2, they started to get back into it when Ryder got on top in HOs, getting the ball to go their way. However, Nank beat him still, especially around the ground. Next PA game, Ryder starred, might have been getting back into form.

I think Nank may struggle against some of the huge and skilful rucks who may beat him well in the HOs, marks and equal him in the follow-up work (e.g. Gawn, Mummy, perhaps Goldstein) but he will fight hard. Major point - I think there will be some games we could use both him and Hampson, assuming he can recover full match fitness. Both Norf and Dees are considering playing two giants as I've commented on elsewhere. Some teams already play 2/3 rucks - Cats, Hawks, Pies, Swans. If Nank is our only man, they will double-team and grind him down especially by the vital Q4. Want Griff tp play far more CHF in support of JR.

Nank is our only decent ruck option at present but he will need support over this year. If not Hampson, otherwise Chol or Soldo have to come on fast.

For a first gamer in AFL colours Nanks did more all around the ground that Hampson did in any game during 2016 season. Based on this showing I can't see Hampson playing AFL again for the Tigers in AFL unless Nanks goes down injured.

A series of stats was shown at the bottom of the screen near the end of the first quarter and I thought of Leon.

Hit outs Carlton 10 Richmond 4. HOTA Carlton 3 Richmond 2, Clearances Carlton 5 Richmond 8.

Big welcome to Toby!

Pretty sure we signed him up for another two years after his stellar season last year ::)

Correct. We signed him and Lloyd up for another 2 at the same time.

Yep, it was a master stroke of list management. Re-signed the cooked Maric for another year and the master spud Hampy for 2! Thankfully we got Nankervis otherwise we would've dragged Will Munson out of retirement.......

Yes, exactly illustrating my argument, that you refuse to comprehend no matter how many times I have attempted to convey it to you, because you are so full of your own conceited views. It is about the whole midfield team; not simply the ruckman. But if your ruckman is winning the HOs and your mids are sharp on winning the CLRs, then you have a powerful combination.

But just because a ruckman is winning the HOs, it does not automatically mean his team win the clearances. So this time our mids (which includes Nank) in the 1st Q beat them even though Kreuz was winning the HOs. It totally proves what I have given up trying to convey to you; I know this will fail too. However, maybe read RC's article in the Age today. Fascinating reading. Most of the winning teams had losing rucks BECAUSE their midfields and other players won the contests from and after the HOs e.g. although Sandy dominated, Geelong thrashed Freo around the CLRs; same with the Pies and Dogs. Grundy dominated but, as Beveridge suggests, you can overcome this by winning turnovers. The exception was Dees where Gawn dominated as well as their mids taming Saints and then getting well on top.

PS - And I thought of you while out driving listening to the segment on SEN with Luff and Champion Data. I wasn't able to stop and record the very interesting stats he revealed on Dusty's role in our midfield. It explained what I was struggling to understand. We all rate him as probably our top mid, but he's actually a poor CLR player. On stats, we actually do much better without DM in the centre. His value is as an outside mid running into attack and up forward. I had suspected for a long time that he does not have great anticipation nor read the play all that well; but once he is in a contest he thrives.

Norf win the hit outs 51 to 29 and got smashed by 43 points.

Yes because after the CBs and stoppages they lost the contests; couldn't win the ball; lost disposals 341/414. The ruckman is just 1/18 players. If the rest can't measure up to the opposition, what can he do about it?

WCE have this new guy to assist their existing stoppage machine Priddis ... someone called Sam Mitchell.

Dockers 15 hit outs to 4 at 1/4 time and they're getting smashed.

Same, same. Another example.

If we perform better this year, it won't just be because of Nankervis. It's because our whole midfield has been ramped up.

Prestia rated our 2nd best player; he plays mid. Caddy was ok to good (17Ds). The extra depth and support might have helped Cotchin, Grigg and Edwards to put in good games too. The ruck might be dominating but if his mids are chumps on the day, the side is cactus.

But you wont apply that logic to 2015 and 2016 where the midfield set up didn't change.
