Personally I only see hammer time as an insurance policy to provide short term cover to allow Maric to recover from his first ruck duties. He is never going to be our 1st choice ruck man with his limited ability to mark the footy and influence contested footy.

Without Maric we are definitely a weakened side, and while Hampson is unlikely to provide to same level of output as Maric, he does at least provide a good contest in the ruck. It allows us not to be forced to commit younger bodies to ruck duties. He will also help extend Maric's career by allowing him to rest games that he would otherwise by forced to play.

The question is then how much is this costing us? In terms of draft picks and players, we perhaps paid overs. Given the inexact nature of the medium of exchange available to clubs, this is always difficult to achieve. Even though we paid a premium, I don't think we paid something too costly. The bigger concern is how much cap space he is taking. If he is on in excess of $300k then it starts to hurt, but anything less is acceptable for what he provides the team overall IMO.

Good post Gia, I think he's on 250k, not over the top for a capable back-up ruckman. Even in hindsight I think we grabbed the best available in the second round category, McEvoy didn't fit our structure and clearly isn't worth a first rounder, ditto Longer & Mummy's price tag was nonsensical given we already have a similar type in Maric. Wood has been ok but we at least spent a month observing his performances on the track, you can't knock the club on due diligence issues. The key now will be to unearth a talented junior over the next few seasons, Soldo & another young gun can fight it out for a while.

Still time for Hampson.

Maybe it is just a confidence thing?

His game against GWS was probably his best for us albeit against inferior opposition.

I'll never understand why didn't we just keep Tom Derickx. He's doing a very serviceable job with the Sydney.

Because he's a hopeless tap ruckman, I wouldn't be surprised if he never plays another senior game.

Tommy averages 17.6 tap outs per game and Hampy averages 17.5.....

Taps to advantage are the only things that concern me, Hampson was running a close second to Sandilands early in the season. Those stats are also distorted by Hampson's sub games, no way Derickx comes close to him as a tap ruckman.

What's Hampys HOTA compared to Derrickx?

compare this year when they both played mainly as 1st choice ruckmen.

This year, he wins a hitout-to-advantage at 20.7 per cent of ruck contests he attends, which is ranked second only to Fremantle’s Aaron Sandilands, who achieves that feat at 21.4 per cent.

Don't know about X-man but from watching quite a few Swans games he was largely ineffective. He did mark the ball better, that I will concede.

That stat of 20.7 was based after 5 games, not a real big sample.

Look, I'm sure Hampys HOTA is better than Toms but by how much? My guess is it's negligible.

Nah, career stats take into account all of their variables.

We've been over this territory countless times, CD stats indicated the same thing over the past 2 years, I even linked the audio for you at the start of the season.

So be it. I'll take the lead of the RFC selectors who dropped him twice this season where he played 11 games ahead of a subset of 1 particular statistic as a guide of his ability then.

No doubt his form waned, don't think anyone's disputing that. Hopefully he can turn things around next season, at a bare minimum he provides good cover for Maric, we may even be able to extend Ivan's career by a couple of years if managed well.

I'f anyone wants to see what Hampson provides, watch the GWS game where he was absolutely dominant and continually gave us first use. Gave Giles and Mummy a bath. Griff and Vickery also played and Jack kicked 11. Hampson has a huge upside imo.
