In hindsight I concede it's not been a good move - but at what point did you decide it's such a bad move? At the time?
Having watched Hampson at Carlton, I was dubious when he came across. Saw the majority of games this year & from the Brisbane game onwards, lost faith in his ability to help us going forward.

Got hit outs, but that was it. Dreamtime game (after which he was hardly played), was the point where I decided it was the wrong move. For his remaining time under contract, he's purely back up in case Maric gets injured. Hopefully we can develop other ruck options as soon as possible.

The way I now look at Hammertime is we over paid but the jobs done, we now have a very good back up tap ruck on the list an don't need to go wasting high picks for a couple of years searching for a replacement for Maric, if managed correctly he could still be very handy to how Marics body holds up, played in the right games against the right opponents where Maric gets a rest he could still be handy an can give our mids a few easy clearances , far from a win or perfect but we can still benefit from him on the list

Yes, Hampy will be the "insurance" ruck for Ivan but you'd rather not be paying $250k for a VFL player to wait in the wings would you? Swans (Derrickx at pick 167 and what, $80k) and Carlton (Wood as a rookie pick, at $60k?) played it much better for rucks similar standard to Hampson (pick 32)

Derrickx is a dud. If Maric went down in rd 23 I would have been much happier having Hampson waiting than Derrickx.
Wood is the blues 3rd choice ruckman. Behind Kruezer (pick 1) and Warnock (traded for pick 16?).

Yep, Tom is a dud....and Hampson is on par with Tom.

And yes, Wood was the Blues 3rd choice ....as was Hampy behind Ivan and either TV or Griff.

But I never said Wood or Tom were bette than Hampy just better VALUE.

Derickx was such good value we delisted him after 4 uninspiring years.

The club made the trade.
Obviously there were concerns over Maric's ability to get back from injury, and the ability to play out the season, and that's where they placed Hampson's value.
In review they were wrong, with a caveat attached.
This year, as an AFL player, Shaun had a new workplace, with new workmates.
This year, as a man, Shaun lost his father.
In the same year, as a man, Shaun became a father with a woman 13 years his senior, and as she's a celebrity, all the attendant bullshite that goes with it.
In anyones life, this year has all the makings of an existential crisis.
He's just 26 years old, a heavy load on young shoulders.
I'll cut him some slack, and hope that he has a better 2015 both professionally, and more importantly personally.

Top post, brings some much needed perspective to the debate.

That's how I look at it too, Corny.

That too. To lose your old man at 26 would hit you hard.

And Hampy was such great value Carlton traded him after 7 uninspiring seasons. But I'm happy to revisit this at the end of 2016 and see what value we got from Shaun.

Reads like a list of excuses to me.

Hampson has eyesight issues. Well known at Carlton.

Has had several instances of corrective laser surgery, throughout his career, not that anyone could tell by the amount of marks he has missed.

Would have thought that would come up in any medical before we drafted him if it was that much of an issue.
Thought his cement hands might have come up too.

The eyes were addressed with surgery. His biggest problem has always been the hands. Gets to the footy, almost gets it but then lets it go.

Has always been an almost footballer. He could one day 'click' and tear a game apart but it becomes less and less likely as time goes on. Maric is your No 1 (I am a Blues supporter) but Hammer is an ok backup. I thought he would do better with his chances this year. Count yourself lucky you didn't take Warnock! I would have kept Hampson over him...

Exactly, for all Shaun's shortcomings Warnock is worse, can't kick & mark to save himself. Given this was Hampson's first year of full time rucking he deserves some slack, if he can string together some more performances like he did against Mummy then we'll have a respectable 2nd ruckman on our hands.
