Shane Kersten

Sounds a gamble but myabe one worth taking in this shallow draft - if he is still around, reckon others will punt on him first.

I remember in 2010, Kerstens being the FF and Darling being the CHF.
Or was that 2009?

With Reiwoldt and Vickery as key forwards, Kerstens height-wise would be a good mix as a mobile 3rd forward. And our team lacks for a quick lead-up forward.

Mind you, at 190cm, his mobility will be the key to his success.
His sub-3sec 20m sprint is good news, combined with strong hands and reliable kicking.
His lack of endurance is of concern for a 190cm because constant running will be required.

Gourdis, also a junior WA CHF, at 194cm, had a sub-3sec 20m sprint.
But he could never kick well enough as a forward, even as a junior.

I suppose his level of 'desire' will be the key. He has time to improve his endurance.
The key will be whether he desperately wants to improve.

To me, the question is how well Kerstens compares to a similar sized TAC boy, who already has shown all the physical and mental attributes for AFL.

Does Kerstens have the mental discipline or is as AFL ready as a Markworth, McKenzie or some other?

I just assumed all along GWS or Brisbane would take him, but now hearing this, I honestly can't contain myself.

That is what the article was inferring. It said that both Richmond and Brisbane had this kid going around the 12-16 mark. The idea seemed to be the Tigers would take him if he was there.

I wish I had a link to the article, but it doesn't seem to have made it up on the West's website.

oh well if Brisbane take him they can't take Docherty so we will end up with him.

Why would we take a lead up key forward as this guy seems to be ? Riewoldt, Vickery , Griffiths and also astbury can all play there and are all young .

I would be surprised if Brisbane let him go through if he is any good , they have no key forwards except an aging Brown .

I still expect a running player at 15

Yeah its an interesting one.

Unless he can play high in the forward line nearly full-time (of which leysy has no idea BTW), then really it is almost the last spot we need with Jack & TV on the books.

I think there is a silver lining in this for sure.

Streaker is correct there will be some form of silver lining whether it be one of the highly rated mids falls Greene, Adams, Smith, Sumner etc

Brissy seem very happy with Karnezis, and Retzlaff is going OK for a genuine tall. They already have Cornelius on their list, who is a great grab, good kick under-sized lead up FF type with limited ability/endurance to play higher up the ground; I doubt they're thinking they need another one. Reckon they may reach for Tomlinson @8, figuring he'll be off the board @12, and hoping he'll maintain the versatility hes' shown so far will translate to options forward and back. I find it hard to believe they won't inject some much needed pace and kicking ability into their backline with Docherty, however. If it weren't for Hanley fortuitously coming on this year, they would have been almost devoid of run and carry.

I think Tomlinson will be gone at 7. He's not "worth" that much, but GWS need some talls, and Brisbane will take him at 8 if they don't.

Don't forget he would need to spend time down back to round out his football education.

I haven't seen him this year so maybe he's developed a bit in twelve months but my initial reservations still stand. We've tried the lead-up forward many times in the past and it just doesn't seem to work particularly well. We wasted pick 12 on Schulz, pick 24 on Hughes, pick 51 on Limbach, you could even throw in Pettifer given he didn't really have a defensive side to his game. If anybody has any information to the contrary please interject but how is a guy who ran 13.08 in his beep test going to exert the necessary pressure required of a third tall?

Personally, I'd rather grab a guy like O'Hanlon with pick 55 and put the same amount of time building up his endurance, he's just as much chance of playing in the midfield as Kersten IMO.

Good point.

Might very well be better getting a 188cm midfielder who can kick regular goals.

I think Brisbane will go either Tomlinson at 8 if available or best mid.

As for pick 12 I think they will go Kersten if they don't pick up Tomlinson earlier.

Although they have a good crop of young talls, Clarke is too big a hole to fill not to pick up another quality tall forward.

I would have thought there are 3 types that end up playing the role.

2 types do it well.

The first category is the Chapman, O'Keefe type player. Brilliant at running the lines up and back, finding the footy, kicking long goals or finding a team mate in a good position. These types end up in the role but could just as readily play wing, half back or in the middle because they're just great players.

The second category is the freaky Stevie J type. These are very hard to find and probably diamonds in the rough. Using high draft picks to explore for these types is filled with danger. Someone gave Pettifer as an example and there are many others.

The third type might be adequate in a good side for a while but not sustainably good enough in a poor side or when he becomes the second or first forward. Think Stu Edwards, Jurica, P Bowden, Pearce, Williams etc.

And he is best mates with Dom Tyson having played together since Auskick and at school, so taking the pair might go some way to keeping the two private school boys in Blacktown after their initial two year deal.

Just took a quick look at another board and FWIW its being reported that Emma Quayle tweeted that there was no substance to the rumour that we would take Kersten at 15 . She said that Docherty will either be a Lion at 12 or a Tiger at 15 .

If someone has access to Twitter and follows Emma maybe they can verify this .

He needs to work on his inside game & will always be a bit more outside than those two but Jordan Murdoch could a similar role to the first you mention ILO.
Probably more wing/half back to go with his forward work than the excellent inside games Chapman/O'Keefe have.

Will start out similar to Isaac Smith but with his size & attributes can be a very dangerous floating 3rd tall in the future for leysy.

Reckon he's a cracking fit for us.

She said no to Kerston and no to Kavanagh for us. The Kersten rumour is out of the West in the context of Freo being beaten to their preferred option.

Could do worse than Docherty I reckon. Looks a ready-made prospect.
