Semi finals 2022: Cleaning dog hair off the couch games

No, I would say that maybe their talent allowed any issues to be ignored, and their arrogance maybe wasnt as strong last year as they werent reigning premiers.

as is often said it is very hard to win one premiership, let alone multiple, and a lot needs to go right. i cannot see how off field culture cannot be a factor in training efforts and in injury and rehab management. i also cannot see how a closeness of a group can be ignored contributing to whether those players do everything they can to make their teammates succeed.
Lever certainly didn't do all he could in the last couple of minutes.........selfish act! Lever was at just about every Dees player and he and May were at each other all night

Yep, Petracca, Gawn, Oliver all battling injuries, McDonald not in the side at all. Others just struggling for form.

Is it your contention they had a great culture last season and then they turned into jerks?
Maybe that they only held it together for one year is some evidence to say that it is possible they turned into Jerks

I think with Melbourne they are 1 - completely up themselves, 2 - arrogant and 3 - they don't work hard enough. Add that to a failing forward line for the amount of ball they dominate and it doesn't bode well.

No idea who their fitness guy was this year but either he is way worse than Burgess, they don't buy into what he is doing or they are arrogant enough to think they don't need to work as hard. The massive change around from blowing teams away in the final quarters last year to getting smashed in final quarters this year is stark and they can't claim its due to aging players, their players should be in their prime years.

going out in straight sets just shows the arrogance of the dynasty tagged Melbourne team.

And I hope Brisbane win it as that will show us how close we could have come to winning the flag.

BTW its not just the players but the footie department at that club too. Get Grundy and everything will be alright, meanwhile Ben Brown can't mark in front of smalls like Answerth and Coleman.

There was 1 specific time I think in the 3rd (Daisy Pearce claimed, Brown did really well making it a contest, um no), Brown was in front of Answerth (Brown is 200cm, Answerth is 183), ball was to Browns advantage and he couldn't take the mark. That is *smile* poor. Did it again in the 4th when on the 182cm Coleman.

Ben Brown is a small playing in a big guys awkwardly sized body.

So you mean the Dees arent as good at footy this year than they were last year? or even 3 months ago?

and that a culture that breeds humility cant correlate to a culture that breeds hard work, and likewise a culture that breeds arrogance cant lead to complacency and selfishness, and perhaps not working so hard? or that a culture that breeds arrogance cant lead to player disliking each other, arguing during games, and perhaps not having their heads in the right place when the going gets tough?
Beautifully put brodders.

It is possible for a team without the right culture to put it altogether for a season and grab the ultimate prize, it’s much harder to climb the mountain again and again and that’s why the Hawks and us built a dynasty and the Bulldogs, Eagles and now Melbourne did not. Of course there’s also TBR’s contention that everyone else is good and Richmond is bad.

I suggest an element of both

I agree it's a factor, I just think it is a hugely overblown one. In my opinion the off-field stuff is a romanticised view of sport.

If we all come together and try really hard we can win, Mighty Ducks style. And then we alter our perceptions to suit the result and tell the story we like.

If Lever was cooking his team mates last season, it was great leadership, this year they are having conflict. If a team is winning they have a great culture and all love each other, if they are losing there are issues. Someone has a laugh in the huddle when they win and the team is relaxed and enjoying their footy, do it when you lose and they are not committed and don't care.

The reality is you win because you play better than the other team. I understand there are arguments about fitness or effort being driven by external factors but I again think they come from within. I've seen very few, if any, professional athletes with poor approaches to effort or professional standards who were turned around by anything like culture but I've seen many, many people try. It is either in them or it isn't. And by the way, players carry that romantic view as much as anyone does in terms of the things they think help or don't.

This rubbish that I'm saying everyone else is good and Richmond isn't is just garbage. We won three flags because we had an exceptional list of footballers including one of the most exceptional ever. Melbourne won a flag with a really good list of players but couldn't sustain because it is a really hard thing to do.

I just did some numbers and the dees are just a different team to last year. Last year they were 11-2 vs top 8 teams and 6-0 vs top 4 teams. This year they were 5-8 vs top 8 teams and 0-5 vs top 4 teams.

I guess we didn’t go back to back in 2018 but did in 2019 and 2020.

So the Dees could still build a set of results that we would be envious of so I will keep my powder a little dry.

But the difference is that after 2017, we were humble and set out to prove it wasn’t a fluke and our premiership was deserving, hence our dominant 2018 season, the best H&A season we have seen for a long while. The dees problem is that their captain and club started talking dynasty immediately after their one win.

Right now they appear arrogant and went way to early and need to drink some humble bath water.

Aim to walk the high road, but talk the low road, the Dees talked the high road but ended up on the low road.

Says everything. The loss of McDonald could not matter that much either. In fact, they seemed to have a pretty good run with injuries too.

May was right though. Didn't he say that the Dees couldn't win a flag with Melksham in the team? Or did he say that about another player?
