I disagree with most on here. That shot in the second quarter was terrible, all small forwards should kick those 9 times out of 10. It was however uncharacteristic of Sam, he usually does kick those. The round the corner snap in the last, off either his wrong foot or check side I can't remember, was only ever a 50/50 chance.

Apart from that he is actually the only player on our list that plays like a true small forward. He was constantly finding space, getting himself to dangerous positions, front and centre of packs, and making a pest of himself like a small forward should. His miss in the third quarter was his first kick after running off the bench, a tough gig running on off the bench in a close game.

I can only imagine how Sam would be travelling if he had the confidence of the multiple games Morris was gifted in the forward line. Funnily enough his 11 possessions and 1 goal 2 is exactly the same return we got from our full forward, Jack Riewoldt, except Sam did it in half the game time.

Holy cow Batman... A considered, logical and facts based post IMO. Well done mate.

Yep. Why sub him, and only because Hampo got injured? Is this the only way we activate a sub? He could've had a few goals up his sleeve already had he started on ground from 1st minute.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

I would persevere with Lloyd for a few games. He's been out of the senior side for a while and it takes time to readjust from VFL footy. He made some errors but can't keep chopping and changing guys out. Think of all the opportunities Morris and Newman have been afforded. Has some talent no doubt. Persevere.

I don't really get small forward as a sub. If you want to add run late in the match a fresh mid or even a running back flanker would work better.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Disappointing performance

Could have put us 2 and a bit goals clear in the third but tried a miracle snap instead of running straight into an open goal.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Yep, it was a bad and costly miss from him but Sammy if he plays significant gametime will get you goals. But he needs to be given a decent opportunity on the field for the seniors to deliver. He cant kick them from the bench.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Gibve him the next three games and see what he can do. At the moment he's the pick of an ordinary bunch. Definitely better the Gordon, Donut and Morris.

would be impressive if he could.
but, yep agree, needs more game time.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Yep, best we have in this role. Was sent back to get more defensive pressure into his game and he seems to have been more aware of this. We'll only know if we play him. The only one who looks like he'll trouble the scorers.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Would not have dropped McDono for him. Nor can I understand why you would make this type of player sub. Now he is in leave him there until Shed, Conca or CEllis available Went to punt road Conca tried hard looked fit but needs match practice.

Geez there's a big opportunity for Short, Butler an co next year, that's if we don't land Motlop
Agree, massive chance for those 2, esp as the draft is deemed weak - irregardless of Motlop arriving, he isn't the Betts/Milne type we seek

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Lloyd hasnt played seniors for several weeks and to come on and expect him to star is a bit unrealistic ,
unless you give these guys several games in a row like Lloyd and Mcdonough its hard to judge how they are going

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

i'd be inclined to play him for a few more weeks, if he does ok.
he must nail those goals though. that is what he is playing for.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

True.
I would play him from the start though, not as a sub.

We need goals Friday night at it will be on from the start. Hard for a player with his experience in games to come in and impact straight away and get the feel of the game. He stays and starts.

Newman would be my sub choice this Friday. Has experience so when he comes on can assist us in what role we may require. I know he played his best game for a while but that's how in thinking at this time.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Averages a goal a game and has kicked a goal in 8 of the 14 games he's played. You'd assume these figures would improve with experience. I'd like to know what T.O.G he has in those 14 games too. I'm betting it's around the 50-60% mark.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Should be in the team as he is a true small fwd. Don't really care too much about the tackling pressure stuff (Morris was put there for this and wat an epic fail). I care that he can crumb is creative and can kick GOALS. That's his job and he has the most potential and smarts to do this. Leave him in the pocket and let him kick his 2-3 goals a game. Job done.

Hardwick and co's development and belief in natural small forwards is pretty poor.

I have a feeling if we recruited Jeffy Garlett he would've played about 10-12 games so far with a fair few as the sub.

correction. he is back to kicking 1 goal. out of the 20 power kicked. from 6 possessions. against essendon.
A belated reply: give Matty a break. He's had an interrupted year having just come back from his second significant injury. Probably still getting match fitness and form, but I think he's averaged over a goal a game at PA; at least in 2014. So if he was playing for us, you wouldn't take that?! Would have won us the Freo game, plus saved all the angst over Nahas/Morris/Gordon/Lloyd/McDonough/Short/Butler; not to mention contracts. I won't forget that Hardwick and crew didn't rate him worth keeping. But, all for Lloyd getting a real go now - young guys need time and Gordon and Morris lack the skills.
