Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

If it is a choice betweeen lloyd and gordon , Lloyd wins in a landslide . he is a smart highly skilled footballer . The only place i see gordon challenging for a spot is on the wing

As good as Sammy was offensively in the first half when we had the run of play and the ball was kicked to him he was absolutely HORRIBLE DEFENSIVELY in the 2nd half.
His opponent literally ran away from him numerous times to set up their run and carry overlaps.
Today you saw exactly WHY he should be playing AFL and exactly WHY NOT depending on what you value.
He has got ALL the tools to be an effective offensive forward but is so far off defensively it is a joke.
That being said, it is nice to know that if he gets super fit in the offseason and can improve his defensive side dramatically just to not be a liability then we have a player.

His fitness has improved drastically and it looks like he will be fit enough to not be a defensive liability.
And now that he could share the fwd line with a defensive manic like Morris then a pairing of Sammy and Steve up forward could complement each other.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Well ahead of Gordon and McDonough (his competitors) if we are using preseason games as any indicator.

I think he's the purest small forward of those three, in terms of his positioning, smarts and skills.

Agree, Lloyd looks infinitely more skillful and footy smart to me. I hope we persist with him.

Lloyd lambert Mcdonough all belong together (small rover forward) but gordon is more like deledio's height isn't he?

Gordon is 186, Lloyd 180, Lambert 178 but to put it in perspective Deledio is 188, Vlaustin 187, Martin 187, Lennon 188.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Interesting situation this one is.

Gordon has the runs on the board after last season and he is quite physcial can Lloyd match that ? Can Lloyd run all day like Gordon ? Can Gordon kick "bags" of goals like Lloyd ?

Lloyd also has a trick we haven't seen yet and that is he can take massive hangers.

Morris can run all day and is physcial but cannot do any of the other things which begs the question why the heck would he play forward. Both Lloyd and Gordon are more dangerous as forwards and it is easier to teach chase than goal sense.

Maradona is another thing all together as he is not physical, cannot run, can kick apparently but not a high flyer this leaves him trailling the others.

So in order I reckon it should Lloyd, closely followed by Gordon, fair distance (due to development) McDonut and then another kilometre or so back is Morris.

The way it will pan out is Morris - lock, Gordon - lock, Lloyd emergency and Mcdonuts VFL.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Fair summary and unfortunately I think the prediction on who will play also correct. Was at Saturday's game. Morris looked lost up forward while Lloyd looked right at home

We haven't had a good genuine goal sneak for a long time. Lloyd makes his opportunities count. I'm a big fan.

So am I ToO.

He performed well against a few of the better sides in the comp with a limited fitness base.

Now that this has improved, I think he'll surprise a few.

That's the thing Tommy.
Bottom line is he knows how to play.
This footy nomad has kicked a heap of goals in the ammos but he's never been exposed to elite training in the way he would have been the past 18 months.
Fitness is one of the easiest things to improve & I'm expecting a big year from Slippery Sam.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Agree, some real upside to Sam.

Reckon he'll be a lock for small/medium forward ahead of Morris, Gordon and Plugger pretty quickly this year.

I hope the coaching staff see it that way too

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

He's got some tricks.

Compensates for Morris' traits better than Gordon does too.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Surely this bloke gets a game round 1.

Has the smarts around goal!

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Needs to play. Has a good footy brain, Vickery has none. We need someone in our forward line other than jack who knows what to do down there

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Not sure what he has to do to earn more game time.

Morris vd Lloyd. Both will get you 10-15 touches. One will kick 2-3 the other will give away 2-3 free kicks and guard the mark well.
