Ryan Bastinac

Agree, Griff still has plenty of time to make it. Has plenty of AFL traits to do so. The move back even if temporary is a good one ILO.

Leysy stayed clear of this one & unusually hasnt had an opinion either way. Can see both sides.

But if someone does have the balls the call something out at the time, they do deserve some kudos though.

Am just keepin things honest Spook. ;D

Like when I picked Jack Darling with pick 10 in the PRE Phantom Draft and you wouldn't have touched him with a barge pole? ;)

Like most recruiters leysy had some doubts on him.

Top get at 10 by you.

Plenty of skeletons in leysy's closet.

I'd also point out that after two seasons Ben Reid had played six games for Collingwood.

And he only played two games in his third year.

Patience, grasshoppers.

Remember seeing Reid playing reserves in his first three seasons and he was a skinny beanpole who showed promise yet struggled to even make an impact at VFL level.

It's a timely reminder that very few KP players make an immediate statement in their first couple of years, even the freakish Franklin floundered in the reserves before making his mark as an elite talent.

Finding and developing quality bigmen is one of the toughest assignments in the business, just ask the Western Bulldogs or even Terry Wallace, those that succeed are the clubs that plan well into the future and by doing this, they avoid having their hand forced at the draft table. The last thing the RFC needs is to be stuck in a situation similar to the Doggies, having to pay above the odds for a guy like Jarrad Grant or Tom Williams.

It ultimately comes down to a numbers game and the stark reality is that the odds of success are a lot longer when it comes to identifying and preparing a key position player for senior football. We could pick up guys like Bastinac year in, year out, our overall success rate would probably be higher, but that doesn't necessarily make us brilliant list managers.

At the moment we have Post, Astbury, Elton and Griffiths all vying for CHB & CHF, I would argue we need even more players churning through the system to ensure we get at least two of significant quality. That ultimately means we have to use some of our early picks on talls, there also needs to be a realisation that some will fail, but in the context of unearthing some gems, that is simply the process at work.

Just had a look at that phantom draft for a bit of fun. Actually someone should go through some of the older one's & see how we all went.

Took Jayden Pitt @ 12, Scott Lycett 33, Sam Crocker 50 & George Horlin-Smith 53

No Darlings, but still happy with that haul.

I did have Gold Coast, so I was going to hit a few. ;D

I'd like to dig up the Allybabe's Top 75 thread - I reckon I did alright there too.

Parker went at 35 and Fasolo 45 in the same draft we took Batchelor at 30, so we could only have one of the three. I'm not unhappy with our man, not by a long stretch - I'd take him over the others today.

Christensen played in a premiership in his second year because he could slot into a mature team as an extremity, a nice haircut on a well-built, good-looking bloke with great bone structure. At the time we drafted Griff we were gutting the list and pretty much starting again. We needed to get that bone structure, to build a skeleton. Whether he comes on or not it was the right approach. We had zero spine players we could count on. Since then Jack, Rance and Grimes (taken that year too) have come on enormously and we still need one or two more to come on. If we hadn't drafted Griff, Astbury and Elton who would be the candidates? McGuane might have been signed to 2015. :help

You're looking at the 2009 draft through 2012 eyes. Only in your wildest dreams could you have thought we'd be anywhere near even hoping to challenge in 2013 back then. It's a testament to how much the club's got right since that we are.

Three mids this year, all taken with earlier picks than Parker, Fasolo or Christensen, combined with one or more of Griff, Astbury or Elton making the grade and we will be pushing for flags from 2014-2020. A longer, more sustained challenge because we took the time to build a big strong frame.

Yeah, fair play to you spook. You make a lot of sense. I get that but I wanted Bastinac at 19 on draft night.

And I was with you on Darling. Always a fan.

I'd love a good look at my picks in the Phantoms. Wonder how many shockers I have floating around.

Interesting thread that one. Just went back and had a look. Skiptomystu and a few others did exceptionally well...

15. Western Bulldogs- Ben Griffiths

31. Western Bulldogs- Dylan Grimes

63. Western Bulldogs- Majak Daw

79. Western Bulldogs- Travis Casserley

At the time we were desperately light on for talls. After taking Martin at 3 we were almost obliged to use 19 on a KPP.

Yep it was the right thing to do imo. I loved Bastinac aswell but after getting Martin we had to go tall.

Agreed that we had to take talls in that draft.

This highlights a reason why we do not have a balanced list. We are constantly forced to select types to fill holes that are current rather than planning for the future.
If you get even a single pick right it solves not only that problem but allows you room to fix the other problems.
As an example if we had simply got 2005 right we would have Swallow as a ten year player of a high standard so you don't HAVE to take Edwards and thus miss McKenzie who then solves your CHB spot for ten years and then you don't HAVE to take Gourdis and thus miss Bellchambers.

Fair point.

Didn't Collingwood for a few drafts in a row, get to a point where they could basically draft three of the same type in the expectation that at least one of them would work out. In other words, draftin en masse for need. It'd be a nice position to be in.
We need a Howe type and a Betts type as well as a CHB or FB so Rance can be the other and Grimes can be the third tall. Batch is just a bonus back there.
We also need a Nichols (GC) type. And a couple of good outside mids.
