Ryan Bastinac

Umm no thanks. Agree with Phantom. No need for any more light bodied flankers who can't kick.

Agree...best available.

We will be in the rebuilding phase for quite a while yet.

How do you compare short against tall and decide who is best? What is the citeria? I can see that you can do that at the top end where quality shines out but @ pick #19 in this weaken draft the difference between the kids is not going to be glaringly obvious. Surely then - if there is no clear standout - we have to use needs as the basis of our selection.

He isnt a flanker. Is very good inside and can win clearances at will. When he gets bigger will be very dangerous.

Not that hard is it? We pick the player we think has the most likelihood of improving our team over the long haul.

Like I said we have problems everywhere.
You may disagree but by all accounts I've read, the quality of mids looks to be considerably higher in this draft than the quality of talls.

I am no jnr expert but to me Bastinac (for example) looks likely that he'll play plenty of AFL football, yet some of the talls suggested around the same mark this year appear more speculative. Of course I could be flat out wrong. ;)

I'm not ignoring the need for structure either but we did go some way towards that by selecting two quality talls with our first two selections last year but of course we need more.
So by all means if there is a tall there that we like the look of then grab them.
However if they're not then you don't just jump at the next tall on your list to fill a need, you take the best available and in this draft that appears it will be a mid.

Says on his draft profile he's a Richmond supporter. Also talks about his strongest assests which he think is his ball use and decision making, models himself on Scott Pendelbury. Martin and Bastinac would be a good result.

Sheeyit old fart! Oops I mean gee whizz Tooheys. We put on Stumpy and High def but we lost Richo, Yowie, Steamee, Patto and the Cat so we've just gone backwards by three talls regardless of claims to quality or otherwise.
First two picks need to be best available as they are inside the top twenty. After that if there is not a huge gap in talent we need to adress structure. We'll lose Simmo at the end of next year if not sooner so the need for some large bodies is getting near desperate.

Spot on IRZ This kid will be a player..Book Mark me on that!!!

I sincerely hope Griffiths turns out to be a gun and isn't injury riddled all his career or else we will regret not picking Bastinac at pick 19. He's performing nearly as well as Scully in his first year, will be a gun and exactly what we need in the midfield. Good, smart ball user.

Barnzy I’m finding it difficult to read your posts cos I’m just looking at your avatar.

Agreed. Plenty here were a wrap for Bastinac.
He looks a ripper and going very well for the Roos.

I'm happy to pick up a player like Griffiths over a Bastinac, only because you need to take a risk to snag a tall forward.

So rather than compare the two, perhaps take issue with the club's approach. I think the approach was correct - early in a new regime, new rebuild, best to try and get some quality tall players first.

It would be a totally different scenario if we had of overlooked Bastinac for the latest McMahon, Hilton, Polo, Biddiscombe type - like we usually do.

Was three drafts ago SCOOP and at that stage we needed everything.

True but Bastinac as much seemed at least like a stalwart type footballer. He's heading beyond that now.

We were in a position where we couldn't afford to keep fluffing draft picks and Griffiths, for all his potential, did come in with shoulder concerns which have continued to dog him unfortunately.

This thread will disappear pretty quickly if Griffo kicks on though and I haven't given up hope of that happening just yet..
