Or we'd have Mitch Clark.

Yeah overlooked him for JONNY VICTA

Probably the most furious ive ever been on draft day that day i was expecting M Clark to RFC then Miller reads out some other bloke who certainly turned out to be just some other dud.

Yeah, I was pretty aggrieved, there were a dozen players who I would have taken before JON.

An interesting thread to bump. Amazing how quickly things can change in a few short weeks of football.

I have a question for those that have commented on the Bastinac v Griffiths draft choice. Given the last few weeks, the terrible form of the Kangaroos mid field and the new role for big Ben, who would you take on draft day with today's perspective on both players?

Bastinac still easily. That could change in time.

Hard to tell with talls especially injury prone ones. Always about the injuries with Griff from the moment he was drafted.

Griffiths 10 times out of 10. Those attributes are nearly impossible to come by in one player.

I agree. I said it before in another thread, North have been drafting good ordinary footballers for years now. At best they look a chance to slide into 7th or 8th with an easy draw.

The Tigers rolled the dice big time with Ben, an injury prone guy who happens to be 2 meters tall, runs like the wind, leaps small buildings in a single bound, and can kick the Sherrin over a couple of wheat silos. Big risk, big reward, Francis was looking for a guy who could win you a grand final with a 65 meter drop punt for goal from the M.C.G. wing.

Agree. 100 times out of 100 if the draft was held tomorrow for leysy.

Ballsy choice, but one which could pay off in a big way. Pardon the pun.

Not so clear cut for me. Griff still has a long way to go to overtake Bastinac as a legit AFL footballer.

The injury curse is (touch wood) hopefully gone but I wouldn't be making this call yet.

There is only one Griffo. There are plenty of Bastinac types every year.

Yep. Bastinac types are available in every draft and at every round. Luke Parker, Rory Sloane, are just a couple of examples.

It is more risky, time consuming and difficult to draft talls, but good teams do. Bad teams that take shortcuts draft midfielders every year. Griff has all Australian upside, which is incredible rare for a tall outside the top 10 of the draft.

Having said that I would have been happy with Bastinac, North could always argue Griff's body could go anytime whereas Bastinac will play 200 games.

At the time I wanted Griff but then started to question whether we should have gone a safe selection due to his injuries. If he can stay on the park it was a sensational pick.

He was top 10 on talent but the shoulders were always the issue.

Really liking him at CHB.

Agree midfielders are more readily available and when you have holes to fill like we did you can't ignore a Griff type or Elton type. I remember the year Geelong drafted Dawson they also drafted other huge blokes that year so to stockpile them and if they show talent that have value at the trade table if they become surplus later on. The only time I would definately draft mids in preference to talls is early in the draft ala Cotch, Martin, Pendlebury etc. The exception to the rule is if a Patton is available - this guy will be incredible.
