Round 2: The garlic Uber ride games.

10.5 END OF QUARTER
(a) The end of a quarter occurs when any field Umpire or emergency Umpire first hears the siren sounded by the Timekeepers to signal the end of a quarter.
The field Umpire shall acknowledge the siren and bring play to an end by blowing a whistle and holding both arms above their head.
Yep this is a good AFL rule. Leaves sufficient space for any issues to be swept under the carpet.

It’s when the umpire hears it and not when s/he signals it.

(b) For the avoidance of doubt, if immediately before hearing the siren to end a quarter, a field Umpire is of the opinion that a Player should be awarded a Free Kick or a Mark, the field Umpire shall signal that play has come to an end and then award the Free Kick or Mark to the Player. A Free Kick will not be awarded where the football has been kicked and, after the field Umpire has heard the siren, lands Out of Bounds On the Full.
So the end of the game is when the umpire believes he heard the siren. I reckon it crosses the line before the siren so should have been a free but no idea what happens if the umpire believes he heard the siren between the kick and the ball crossing the line. Possibly should still be a free kick as the act of insufficient intent is at the time of the kick.

Right. So nobody knows when he heard it except him.

But in any case, Watching again, the siren seems to sound after it’s gone out ie he had the opportunity to call deliberate and should have followed his eyes first and not his ears later.

Whatever, AFL will still say they got it right.

Exactly.

I was watching the timer. I thought it expired maybe half a second before it went out of bounds on my first watch. Haven’t rewatched. It was close.

The field ump can only make the deliberate call once the boundary ump has signalled the ball is OOB.

Field ump is ready to signal deliberate once boundary ump calls it OOB.

Boundary ump doesn’t get to signal OOB before the siren sounds, so the field ump simply cannot make the call of deliberate in play.

Seems simple to me.

Geez it’s so close. The ball definitely goes over before the siren, but the boundary umpire signals OOB pretty much right on the siren.

That being the case, then the field umpire has an eye and ear dilemma. In the end he went with the ear….but it’s totally line ball it seems. At least on tv.

There’s probably grounds to accept his decision. Again, only watching on tv.

That’s it, there’s hours of debate in this split second decision.

We have a very specific set of circumstances here that creates a correct technical decision rather than makes a correct moral decision.

Flog #23 put his arms up well after the ball went OOB.
It's when the umpire hears the siren, not when he puts his hands up. Norf blokes heard the siren and were celebrating before the ball went out. Anyway, evens up for the deliberate they didn't pay against Freo a few minutes earlier.

Thought the Freo North game was a ripper. Davies Uniack is a star. Loved watching Charlie Comben, such a whole-hearted competitor for a young tall.

If a player kicks the ball just before the siren goes, the the siren goes while the ball is in the air, then it goes through the goals, it’s a goal. How is this situation different? He kicks it before the siren, it’s obvious his only intention is the boundary line, the siren goes, it goes over the line. Free kick for deliberate or insufficient intent.

Can a free be awarded after the siren?

It’s different because it’s explicitly written into the rules.

When you point this out though it is super inconsistent.

Then again a forward never gets deliberate against when their shot at goal misses by a mile and goes out of bounds. Anywhere else a skill error is punished.

*smile* me, has anyone on this forum ever had a positive thought about anything?

I genuinely wonder why so many people follow a game they seem to hate so much.
I have positive thoughts that I hate everything bar the Tiges. Is that wrong or something TBR????
Personally deem it to be good therapy, get out all the angst, tension n anger by hatin at the oppo n HQ all weekend, then I find myself remarkably balanced n composed for everything else all week long.

That's what I meant. Norf players heard the siren, then jumped up with joy, but it's not over until the flog hears the siren and puts his arms up. The ball was well over the boundary by then.
