Round 2: The garlic Uber ride games.

It’s not meant to be logical. Haven’t you sat in the crowd in the outer at a game ?
TBR was too busy sippin Kardonhay in the ladies lounge n appreciating the Crow Baits sterling fight back during the third qtr, I'll bet the posh bugger even had his little pinkie finger nicely bent while raisin his glass.

If a player kicks the ball just before the siren goes, the the siren goes while the ball is in the air, then it goes through the goals, it’s a goal. How is this situation different? He kicks it before the siren, it’s obvious his only intention is the boundary line, the siren goes, it goes over the line. Free kick for deliberate or insufficient intent.
If the siren goes before the ball goes out of bounds, it didn't go out of bounds.

It’s when the umpire hears it and not when s/he signals it.

Spot on, and to take it even further the official siren isn't what you hear, it's played as a chime in the umpire's earpiece.

The 'siren' is when any of them hear that noise, so given the noise takes time to move around a stadium and it takes time to hear and signal something, there is always going to be a little gap between the two. If it looks on the siren to the naked eye it is almost certainly after.

Just to confuse it even more, I have a feeling the siren you hear at the ground isn't run by the timekeepers, it's done by the ground staff via the PA system by watching the official clock count down. They see it tick to zero and then push the button which is why there's always a little delay after the clock hits zero. I'd need to fact check that but vaguely remember hearing it at some stage.

Just a very civilised afternoon TM.

My only complaint is there needs to be segregated aisles so we don't need to mix with the unwashed upon entry and exit.

Coach/player relationship is breaking down I reckon.
Media starting to suggest something's going on. Hun ran a name check of all the premiership players that have left the Woofers for other clubs since their flag in 16, constant trickle of departure over the years.

Oh no! Surely they didn't force you to mingle with the heaving masses on the way to the dunnies TBR? That would be simply outrageous.

They just looked at the footage on the ABC, first I'd seen it. Siren looks like it goes as the ball crosses the line. IMO you could argue either way, my gut feel is that its probably just over, and given the slight delay in ump hearing it and registering it, it should have been a free. But the AFL have come out and ticked it off, so apparently you can only argue one way.

I think it’s pretty clear cut the siren goes before the ball crosses the line.

That was what I saw live and the replay confirms it. Everyone looking for outrage is off the mark here IMO. Perfect but technical decision. (Especially if per TBRs post the umpires get a chime in their ear when the clock runs out. And that is the siren)

With that said I would have preferred it to be another FARC up but there is no review protocol on this one I don’t think.

When did the flog call game over then?

The game is over when any umpire HEARS the siren, not signals it. The signal is to tell everyone else it is over.

The ball isn't out of bounds until the boundary umpire blows their whistle and signals it is out of bounds.

The umpire can't pay deliberate out of bounds until the ball has been signalled out of bounds as above.

In that instance the ball crossed the line around the time we heard the siren, which is a moment after the umpire would have heard it in their earpiece. There is no way the boundary umpire has time to whistle and signal so there is no ball out of bounds to pay a free kick for.

How do we ALL know WHEN he heard it in HIS earpiece???? His raising of arms should be instant.

Great to see that the AFL have released the ARC vision. It goes a long way to clearing things up when they do that, so its good to see them doing it consistently. Hang on a sec...

Because he tells us the game is over and they stop playing? Any of the umpires can hear the siren and could be raising their arms, not just the one near the play. In fact it is probably more likely one not near the play who would do it first.

You can hear an ump say "pay it" and only after that is "siren" called out. The call of "siren" is well after we and all the norf players hear the siren.
Not sure that earpiece chime is effective.

They definitely say 'pay it' before the siren goes and before the ball is over the line, they communicate like that with out of bounds decisions all the time.

As he finishes saying 'pay it' the siren has sounded so it can't be paid because the boundary umpire hasn't had time to signal.

The game is over when ‘the flog’ hears the siren which according to TBR is directly played as a chime in their earpiece when the timer clock hits zero. Seems a perfect system to me.

The clock hits zero with the ball in bounds. So there is no free kick to pay.

When they put their hands up is irrelevant.

Even if you take the siren as the one you heard, there's no way there is time for the ball to be over the line and the boundary umpire to have signalled.

The siren is sounding when the ball is near the line, it's hit the fence before the boundary umpire has finished signalling.
