Double trouble: McKay, Curnow to face Tigers, Grimes in fight to be fit
March 13, 2022
Carlton expect key forwards Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow to be fit for selection, while Richmond co-captain Dylan Grimes trained on Sunday and is desperate to take to the field in Thursday night’s blockbuster at the MCG.
The Blues have their main training session on Monday but Coleman medallist McKay (foot) and Curnow (knee soreness) are tracking well. The pair will look to rubber-stamp their fitness, but club officials on Sunday expected the pair to face the Tigers.
Curnow missed the Blues’ five-point win over Melbourne in the AAMI community series clash at Marvel Stadium, and McKay did not play the full match. The Blues announced on February 22 that McKay had a foot problem, but they expressed confidence he would be fit for round one. They believed the time off would help ensure the issue is fixed now and does not become an injury he carries through the season.
Curnow had a minor complaint after an incident in a practice match against St Kilda when he was taken from the field more out of precaution than injury.
The Blues have a tough call to make on Sam Docherty. The former co-captain has made a stirring return from chemotherapy, but the Blues must determine whether he would be better off having another game in the VFL earlier on Thursday. Star defender Jacob Weitering was rested from the Demons’ clash but is also set to return.
Buoyed by their off-season development, revised game plan and the addition of midfield recruits George Hewett and Adam Cerra, the Blues are desperate to end an 11-game skid against the Tigers. They have not beaten Richmond since the 2013 elimination final when they were coached by Mick Malthouse. They last prevailed in what has become their customary round one clash in 2012, when Brett Ratten began his last year as coach.
The Tigers will have to make a call on new co-captain Grimes, who had surgery last week on a fractured left thumb and was in a cast. Grimes has hopes of playing but the Tigers’ medical staff will have significant input on how wise a decision this would be so early in the new season.
Tigers’ senior advisor Neil Balme said Grimes, who trained with the thumb bandaged on Sunday, was keen to play. The Tigers’ match committee met on Sunday, but a final call had yet to be made.
“Grimes is reasonably confident but no certainty. He is very keen, but we won’t take a silly risk on him. He did a bit today [Sunday]. The doc was much more confident today than he had been, but he is still no certainty. It’s just a matter of how he recovers from it,” Balme said.
Fellow defender Nick Vlastuin is nursing a hamstring issue and will likely be ruled out.
Balme said recruit Robbie Tarrant, the former North Melbourne key defender, and star draftee Josh Gibcus were expected to line up. Gibcus, an emerging key defender, has been praised for his athleticism and development over summer, and has spent considerable time manning up veteran Jack Riewoldt.
