Robbie Tarrant

Not a chance.

We used to have Rance and Astbury as our tall back, Grimes on the best small, Vlas and Broad as mediums and Houli and Short as small backs. Its moved a bit over the last 5 years but this is how I see it.

When Rance went out, Grimes needed to move taller to replace him. We now have Balta in the Rance role, Grimes can go back to that smaller role or play taller when teams play 3 talls against us (and Broad doesn't match up well, sometimes Broad will man that 3rd tall).

As 22 points out, on the chart Grimes is missing.
In the 2020 GF we were too top heavy. Dave on Gablett. But Balta on the ball changed the game.
Then I,d suggest we adapted this year and played 3 smalls with some success.
Had to with Balta and Broad out, and Dave with reduced agility.
So we know that Astbury Balta Broad Grimes Vlastuin is too tall a mix.

And the new gamestyles is to have more short passing around the 40-70 mark. We need speed and agility.
It changes it up.
One of the 4 talls is pushed higher up the ground to half back

True. Didn’t think much of him before. Didn’t really know much about him to be honest.
But………since he announced he wants to come to us I’ve been looking over his career and how he hasn’t won at least one Brownlow and earned a few all Australian selections, I’ll never know. I’m flabbergasted :))
Every one seems to look better in yellow and black

To be clear I,m not rating Tarrant over Vlastuin. It's more about size and backline mix.
Nick spent most of this year manning blokes a foot taller, he did well but was fighting out of his weight division. We know this.
He now goes back to the mid size role. Which is no longer there.
All I am saying is that will disrupt the mix
Nick was an intercept player forced to play tall last year. There were no issues in ‘17 when we played Grimes, Rance and Dave as the 3 talls and allowed Broad and Vlastuin to be the smaller defenders. If Tarrant and Grimes are in the gorillas then Nick can take a player who he matches up better on size wise.

Was initially negative about taking a 32 y.old instead of the younger Talia. However, reading all the informed comments here, have come around to it. I have always rated him as a quality KPD and we definitely needed a trusty one for the big gorillas (a lot of 2m KPFs getting around these days) while Miller makes progress hopefully, and packs on some size. His is a better choice as long as he stands up for 2 years.

It's still not making feel any better for losing both potential forward/ruck options, CCJ and Chol, to tide us over when JR8 goes. But allows the greater chance to swing Balta forward now. That starts to work for me. Just maybe Cumberland comes on too.
U will feel completely orgasmic after our best early draft haul in 12 years which will include 2 talented kps,2 talented mids.

Even better with Grimes given the choice of playing small or Tall with Balta,Tarrant here

Am not understanding your Vlas worries,
Maybe your not factoring in,he should not have played almost any games this year ,such were his injuries with a smallest ever pre season.

If Grimes and Vlastuin aren't playing on gorillas it frees up Broad or Short to have a go at playing on the wing opposite McIntosh. I would like to see Short kicking into the forwards more often.

Tarrant was on our short list in the 2007 draft. Norf took him, and we had to settle for Alex Rance a few picks later.

Tarrant was very injury prone in his first few years.

His body should be feeling pretty good as he didn't play a real lot of games this year. I reckon this pudden is a gooden.
I am hopeful he can play the majority of games in his years contracted. His brother from memory did play in his early thirties.

Maybe Join in the chorus #lolnorf's got no balls.

Guess if we gotta plug a hole now that Dave's left, it was always going to be an older freebie while keeping all our picks for the draft.
One can only hope that both Cholly n Cujo fail miserably now they've decided to move elsewhere, nothing personal of course but once they remove the Tigers jumper, *smile* em.
Was hoping to get a look at the Cummerbund on the big stage late this year, pity it didn't happen. Takes marks, moves well, kicks goals n got an honest snippet of mongrel about his game. Can see him in a similar role to Cadds in recent years bit of mid n medium forward.
Chol was failing miserably at the RFC so no reason to expect that to change.

Get excited, folks.

This bloke ain't replacing Astbury, he's replacing Rance.

Bigger than Astbury and Talia. Stronger. More dynamic, with much better lateral movement and closing power. Unlike Astbury and Talia, will not just look to kill the air ball, but turn it into attack.

I hope we get Talia also, as it re-introduces the dynamic our back six had in 2017-2018, when we were nigh unstoppable.

It pushes Balta, Broad, Grimes and Vlastuin down the line, frees them up. Stack and Balta might even go forward.

Yes, Tarrant is 32, but his body is in great nick now that he's over the kidney trouble. I can see him providing 3-4 years of good service.

Thanks to the stand rule, backlines are sagging back more than ever. With less pressing, guys like Tarrant don't have to run marathons every game. He's good for a few years.

Cracking recruitment and easily, easily offsets the CCJ loss for mine. Good times.

Tarrant will be 33 early next season (25/4/2022). History shows us that it takes an exceptional player and/or athlete to play to a high standard after the age of 32. By 32 most players are cooked. It is imo a massive leap of faith by the recruiters at RFC to put a lot of faith in a 33 year old (who would most likely take the biggest forward opponent each week) and it has an air of desperation and short sightedness to it. Could Tarrant match it playing on the very tall and very athletic King brothers for example. Personally I would prefer to give Miller or Nyuon a good run at it early next season.
