Richmond vs St Kilda - Game Day Thread

Hard game to watch.

We did run out of steam, and yes this may be a fitness issue. But it could also be an issue of doing too much chasing. When you are not getting the ground ball, when they have the overlap runners and we don't, our players end up doing a lot of chasing for not much reward. I reckon there are some structure issues as well as fitness issues.

The centre clearances just dropped off in the latter parts of the third and all of the last quarter. This is a serious issue but the issue is we simply don't have the players to stop this. I looked in the centre in the last quarter and saw Balta in ruck, Aarts was there and can't remember the others. But there are serious questions to be raised there. We have 2 rucks, Balta needs to be forward or back, why did we need him in ruck when we have 2? Something wrong with that. I still think Soldo can come back but it might take time. Aarts in the middle, wow, desperate.

Cotch is looking close to done, last year surely. Shedda I have more faith he can go on, he doesn't look like the Shedda we know and love, but he has to lift to keep going beyond 2022. Jack out today but another who I think can be a lot better even at his current age, but I still think it will be his last year. Unfortunately I find it hard to see Lambert returning, a hip injury for a player who runs all day is likely too much of an issue. Prestia missing is huge. Dusty missing is huge. Aarts and Ross look to be not up to AFL standard, been given plenty of tries, time to try RCD - he performs or doesn't get another contract.

Clearly need to look at the selections. I can't see an overall strategy there, are we playing the older players on merit, why aren't we getting experience into the youngsters? We also need to be looking at the fitness staff, why play Graham in Round 1 and why play Grimes today? They need not have been selected. Again, something wrong, in our best years we did not pick players until they were well and truly over their injuries.

Some coaching issues too. The mids are clearly a problem. Forward line looks fine at times and woeful at other times. After the first quarter both teams had very high scoring percentage per inside 50, ours dived at the end and StKilda ended the game with very impressive inside 50 scoring percentage - more a result of unpressured centre clearances which are close to impossible to defend. The idea of 3 tall forwards has merit, but if they all congregate at the same spot, and the opposition are there at the fall of the ball if no-one marks it, then the forward line fails. Must get better separation, must be better at positioning for the fall of the ball.

All in all a lot to work on.

Umpiring - simply putrid, grossly inconsistent and clearly not good enough for a professional league.

Yeah but we need to start selecting bona fide midfielders. We have been absolutely destroyed in the midfield 2 out of 3 games.
No they will pick hybrid types.
Even when we were winning flags
The misses in the drafts were all going to come back and bite us on the ass.
Not only do you need some kids to turn into A graders bit you need to bring in spot fillers.
Why keep Caddy?
Is Stack ever going to be fit enough?
Why draft a tall in Coleman Jones when you already had talls on the list.
List management is still a huge issue.
Besides Tarrant who called us, why didn't we use at least 1 pick to bring on someone ready to play in the guts.
We used 5 picks $50 bucks in 2025 there will be lucky 2 would be still on the list.

I only saw 5 mins here and there.
But every time Cotchin went near it
It was a turn over.
Not sure who said Lynch was the fitness je has been in a very long time.
He looks Michael Roach in 1988.

I still have high hopes for RCD. Has played 2 good ressie games and i hope he gets his chance once again in the ones.

Today's game stats for the reserves. Sonsie looks the goods and I have been impressed with Judson Clarke. Mansell also played a good game.

Does anyone know if Banks was on managed minutes again? Last week he only played the 1st half.

I thought we played well for most of the game. Didn't watch the last qtr once we went behind. I watched it on kayo on delay. When my autistic son came and checked the score before he went to bed and said to me I love you daddy and gave me a cuddle I knew we had lost. His mum told him the score but he wasn't allowed to tell me but his actions gave it away and when we went behind I knew where it was heading and checked the score.

My concerns are with Cotch and Shedda. They look well past it. Cant produce what they are known for. Also though McIntosh was a liability. When Grimes went off we leaked like a sieve but his body and age also has to be a concern.

We can't have someone like Sonsie running around in the 2s. He steps up to the level and needs to come in.

Also thought Dow was great and Ross much improved. Let's go young and see what we get

I think most on here are underestimating the damage that was done within the club when Dimma strayed.

The whole team culture was built on trust, respect and caring for each other. Its hard for the players to live that culture after the coach did what he did to his wife and family.
Hmmm, now although not married, I also strayed at times and had the absolute "time of my life" doing it if Im being totally honest with myself ............. if players were affected by what their Coach was doing in his private life then Im not sure what to tell you.

And I'd like a dollar on a few more than the "odd player" having a side chick also, we aren't talking Choir Boy's here afterall.

Our success was built on connection both on and off the field. That's clearly been lost. The fact its not an environment that Dusty feels he can heal in is compelling to me.
i think its very relevant & i fear it affects our marketing & recruiting.
female supporters i know of were not impressed, why would existing & potential players wives/partners be any different?
i didnt understand the immediate re-sign when news broke.

Agree we have to try RCD, but it’s more in hope/desperation rather than any confidence. Suspect he’ll be found out running wise and that’ll be it. Need to know for sure though.

Sonsie on the other hand is a likely star, so just needs to be played. Stack the same as soon as he’s available. No more Aarts, Ross can have a spell until he comes back for one last ruck rover trial, Baker back, Rioli goes forward if he wants to keep his spot & Edwards has 2-3 more games to see if he can go on.

Love the story bout your son mate! Beautiful!

In regards to Grimes i think Dimma got that one all wrong. Should have replaced Grimes with Balta and allowed Broad to continue his intercepting role. He rearranged the backline and with the midfield falling away that threw us all over the place

Agree. We want Balta as a swingman. We should have thrown him back (on King),, played the resting ruck forward and Aarts forward

Blokes in their 20s have no right to judge a man who was with his wife longer than many of them have been alive. That said, they are children so I can see how they might be angry at Dad.

Kids are different these days. They are more sensitive and far more aware of whats happening around them.

Rightly or wrongly they will definitely judge him and if it means they have an ounce less respect for him now then ultimately Dimma is done.

Once the players don’t play for you it’s only a matter of time

I can’t recall another clubs fall from grace after a dominant era being so fast since Carey broke #lolnorf

They need Grandpa Balme to tell 'em a few facts of life. How many of them have given almost three decades to one woman and raised their kids to adulthood? Cut your old man a break.

What's the new gameplan? Kick it 12m? until it gets turned over?
.....
Dont forget Kick along the boundary line, slowly to a contest we are outnumbered.

We are still learning our new game plan.
The short kicks designed to give us a breather.
But in the last we can't even get our hands on it!

Umpires didn't help, our undisciplined acts didn't help and like RD 1 the boys coughed up a good lead and ran out of legs in the last quarter.

Being at the ground there were some bad howlers by the umpires, it's unbelievable how they are not held to account.

This one is so obvious but the ump didn't pay the free against the Jack Hayes for tunnelling broad, putting him under the ball.

What's with Shorty Craigy ? For me he has been our most disappointing player the last 25 games........ was winning the B&F the worst thing that could've happened to this bloke ? For some reason it feels like it, he doesn't hit me as the type to let it go to his head, but then again, how would one know ?...but Man, he has been well below Par last year and so far this season and I can't for the likes of me figure out WHY !
One of our best last week, and ok tonight. No Vlaustin Grimes Balta for big periods. New blood down there Ralph, Rioli, Tarrant.
I am not Shorts biggest fan but I think you being a bit harsh here

Its a tough job to retire champions and do it respectfully without them feeling jadded, or worse, ending up at other clubs.

Sheds, Jack, Cotchin, Grimes all look a bit ... old.

It happens to everyone, they deserve to go out on their own terms, given what they have given to us all, but its hard to do.

Ultimately, whether the dynasty is over, depends on Dusty, if he has had enough, we should play the kids, its been a wild ride
