Richmond vs St Kilda - Game Day Thread

The gap between very good and ordinary is the smallest it has ever been. Some of our older players fall off the cliff, a few injuries and we are ordinary again.
We will bounce back given some time but I want to see our aging champs shown the respect they deserve, they have given us so much.
I fear Cotch, Shedda , Jack and Lambo have reached that time that all players get to. I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple of them pull the pin during the season.

I fear you are right. Jack maybe plays on next year, but the others certainly don't look like it. Add Caddy to that, and there will be a fair whack opened up in our salary cap, probably around $2m for those 4 you'd think.

Jack to me is almost gone. I think we should be sowing the seeds now that this is his last year.
Champion player, heart and soul type who had given his all for the club but Father Time has caught up.

Would be a big off season for us, but could be our the big shift in our list management that we need. Frees up probably $2.5m with those 5 ending up (if they do), reckon 1 other might then leave (probably Martyn) and then we look to either bring someone in via trade or bank some cash for future years for free agents and then head to the draft with the rest of our picks.

The other intangible are guys are more easily swayed to go elsewhere for bigger pay cheques once the ride is over.

Read most of the comments about today's game and some very good insight. Clearly most of our issues are around the midfield. We did well there today until we tire in the last 1/3 of the game.I can understand the youngsters like Dow and Ross and so on doing that but our rucks and many experiences players seemed to as well.
The source of my greatest bewilderment however, is the use of Balta. For most of the day he and Lynch were flying for the same balls. And pretty much all bar once, unsuccessfully. Regardless of whether Jack plays or not I think Balta's true value is playing further up the ground. I want to see him compete on the wing for that long kick out of defence. A role that I thought he did admirably last week. This week, apart from a few minutes in the 2nd quarter he was no where to be found. I just think structurally this is the most important move we can make as this has been a big weakness of ours for some time.It may take a little while for him to master the role but if he does he can be a real weapon.

I went into the season hoping for a last run at it but the reality is we aren't anywhere near it. The midfield has been slaughtered late in two out of three games. The Saints aren't world beaters and they made us look ordinary. Without Dusty and Prestia we are probably a bottom six team.

I think we need to just keep finding out about players. Dow was a good today. I think we can nearly put a line through Ross. He just doesn't make good decisions. Hugo showed a bit, although Butts had too much forward craft for him. Sonsie and Mansell played well in the twos so maybe give them a go.

The midfield will need to be rebuilt over the next few years. There isn't much coming through. The 2018 combo of RCD and Ross looks like a bust.

Rule #1 - *smile* teams tire. As at R3 2022 we tire. In R2 GWS did. There's plenty to unfold yet.

We live in interesting times.

I can handle us losing , particularly after such good times , but that was white flag stuff , A bit like the dark days , I found that disappointing
We have short memories. The loss to Geesook last season when we were leading at halftime was equally as bad. As was giving up leads in the 4th to Gold Coast, Lollingwood and struggling to kick a goal against the Shockers. Our form in the last 8 weeks of last year wasn't far off 2016

Last year was the decline. This year will be the send off. If the club does it right we can re-generate with some quality kids and smart free agent and trade play.

Id be retiring Cotchin, Edwards, Jack and possibly Lambert.
Delisting Caddy, Martyn, RCD, Aarts, Ross.
Would seriously look at trading Graham to a SA team and also Castagna to whoever wants him.
Martin could also be moving on.

Big chunk of cap and players. Id be looking at bringing in 2 ready made mids eg Green etc. We need another ruckman with craft. Soldo battles hard but has no craft. He is a chaos footballer.

Would also make Jack an assistant and throw big dollars to lure Hodge as an assistant.

Then go hard again at quality kids. Will be 2022 and 2023 pain and then reckon we start coming good again in 2024.

Interesting comment, one we have heard oh so many times.

But I reckon it’s *smile*.

Its something the media in particular overplay to explain a teams meteoric rise, it sounds great, ground breaking even.

But it takes away from the fact that between 17-20 we were just a damn good football team.
Our success was built on connection both on and off the field. That's clearly been lost. The fact its not an environment that Dusty feels he can heal in is compelling to me.

Good in theory the issue is that Dimma took the majority of the reduced soft cap for himself when he resigned following his split.

It's why we have a bunch of crap assistant coaches now and no chance of getting the likes of Riewoldt and Hodge on peanuts.

Is an interesting point and that is why i think there is more to it. I get Dusty grieving and not wanting to play or concentrate on footy but to completely remove himself from the club yet then go out and celebrate a wedding has me wondering. Perhaps our special culture is now gone.

Whatever happened to the lady(forgot her name) that had done such a big job with the mentaility of the players and culture? Martin was a big wrap for her and would have thought she would be the first one he would have gone to for some help with grieving process

He is required every week. But sound like it was too early.
My point was more along the lines of if he wasnt ready we really werent desperate for a backman as Miller was good the week before. No need to rush back and now could miss weeks

Emma Murray. We've lost too many at the club.
