Richmond vs St Kilda - Game Day Thread

Club seemed to know we had to draft for the future. Gibcus is a futures pick.

The rebuild has already begun.

Give Cotch, Titch and Jack their victory lap.

Free up cap space. Go hard into the draft.

Develop Ryan and Mate. We’re on the way.
Lambert can hobble off with them too. Edwards kind've playing out of sync. Cotch: bad/ good/not good enough.
Injury was the excuse last year. It looks like its struck again. Prestia and now Dusty not playing. Both huge losses.
What's the new gameplan? Kick it 12m? until it gets turned over?
Dow, Parker have been very good. Gibcus? dunno? a rest? Miller? Nyoun.
Tarrant a bit disappointing. A couple of obvious holding frees. Pickett was good and bad with frees against.
May as well have a look at Sonie/ Nyoun/ Stack/ RCD Cumberland.
Grimes OUT I suppose.
Jack R IN.

I think most on here are underestimating the damage that was done within the club when Dimma strayed.

The whole team culture was built on trust, respect and caring for each other. Its hard for the players to live that culture after the coach did what he did to his wife and family.
Ive always thought it was a non issue and people looking for an excuse but gee the decline and lack of fight, togetherness etc really took a dip around the same time so is it coincidence or a real factor. Time will eventually tell but i suppose the question needs to be asked.

What a mess.

Obvious move was Balta down back. Instead we crucified a third gamer on opposition key forward. Disgraceful coaching.

Then we play Balta in the ruck when we already have two ruckman. No creativity to change midfield mix, ball pinging out of our forward 50 time & again, backline wilted, game over.

Real issue is midfield. Edwards is done, Cotchin can only play 2-3 quarters and rest either too slow or not good enough. Can’t solely be pinned on Martin & Prestia not playing.
It was a good test for Gibcus and he'll now know he's got a lot of work to do before he can compete against the best young key forwards in the game.

Agree with all that except Tarrant. King was nowhere to be seen till our midfield decides to do a houdini and the ball continuously came in at will. Done his job every week and ill think youll find he was moved off King when he kicked his last couple. Gibcus for mine had a day to forget. Still think Miller was stiff and should have got the gig ahead of him this week

It broke the relationship the skip had with Dimma which was the backbone of our culture.

I have been worried about Shedda's form through 2021.
Before his kidney injury, Dusty was playing some ordinary games with the burst from packs rare.
Cotchy is carrying the load of far too many selfless battering ram injuries.
Kane Lambert has always relied on his sustained running. Didn't see much of it last year.
Last year Tommy was being double-teamed close to goal. Still too easily spoiled. No use of his mobility in the square.
Josh Caddy out of favour in 2021.
Jake Aarts and George are consistently rewarded for being diligent triers.
Dion is great but injured.
Daniel does some nice things on the backline and everyone declares him a defender.
Importantly we play with many stars out of the team injured.

Nothing that has happened today is a surprise. The idea that a longer layoff would somehow cure our ills is wishful thinking. We need to take stock pretty quickly. We are looking so much like the Hawks and Brisbane post dynasty that it is scary. My point is that today's game is a microcosm of our 2021 season. We might be declaring a testimonial year for a few players sooner than we think. I wonder if our great dynasty captain saw the writing on the wall and may be testing the waters to see if he can still play top football.

We owe our champs so much, but we can't keep watching last quarters like round one and round three. Next week it's the doggies

Interesting comment, one we have heard oh so many times.

But I reckon it’s *smile*.

Its something the media in particular overplay to explain a teams meteoric rise, it sounds great, ground breaking even.

But it takes away from the fact that between 17-20 we were just a damn good football team.

Yes Red, very true.

But if we took the Geelong model we give up, let’s say, at least 2 of Gibcus, Browne and Sonsie.

For what though? The chance to stay relevant, but at the end of the day not really contend?

We did the hard yards for 37 years before becoming legitimate, through going for quick fixes before finally getting it right.

3,4,5 years of pain is a lot more palatable to me
I think that the club knew/knows where we are at. We resisted using any of our draft currency last year on top-ups. So I don't think we are having a tilt in 2022/3. In my opinion we kept the older players on as both a manifestation of our culture and so that they can be there to pass that culture on to five more of the next generation. No more quick fixes.

I have been negatives on this thread so a couple of positives also:

1. Dow looks a player. His hands and evasive skills are excellent in traffic
2. Broad, Pickett and Rioli are all in career best form. Short is now in the elite category also.
3. We have Prestia, Vlaustin and Dusty (hopefully) to return to this team in the next few weeks.
4. Sonsie is the classiest mid we've drafted since Cotch. Needs to go harder at the contest and build a tank but will be a good player. Bolton, Dow and Sonsie are our future midfield.
5. Tom Brown and Judson Clarke also look promising and should be in the seniors before the end of the year.
6. If we get new fitness staff next year it will go a long way to fixing our issues. Not fit enough and too many hamstrings already. I hope Balmey and Livingston are on top of this.
7. Biggy is going to be very good. Him and Gibcus will be our key backs for the next 10 years. Biggy should play next week - he is ready. I can't believe Hartley delisted him at the end of last year and took the risk of someone else grabbing him before we could rookie him again.
8. The best one yet is - How salty are Geesook and their supporters going to be knowing we played our last decent game in our era to beat them in a GF!

Our Dynasty didn't end today
It ended at 3qtr time against WC at Optus Oval.
We have won 3 games since that night
1 draw against Hawthorn.
Time to play picks between 11-19 opps all of them are gone

That is right. It is our topliners that are out bringing the second-stringers into playing against top opposition players and they are not good enough. We are playing b graders on a graders because our best are missing in action.

yes ziggy, that was a strange night at Optus Stadium.

They played so well that night and a win would see them 4th or 5th.

Were 4 goals up, and were completely overrun with a goal at the ending sealing it for WCE.

Since then we have been bloody pathetic.

That West Coast night changed everything.

We can sneak in and everything goes right (including Dusty) we can give it a shake but it’s prolonging the inevitable.

We need to integrate some more kids and stop playing middling players who have peaked. Look at what Clarkson did at Hawthorn, do the opposite. I think come years end with some vets gracefully going off into the football afterlife we should have cap space. I’m not sure we have much to trade.

Fair point.
We have been reeled in many times since.
Sad.
I remember watching us in 2018 and no matter how far back I knew we would win. 2018 and back half of 2019 was an amazing time to watch us play.
We grinded teams into dust.

That game ended West Coast pretty much also even though they got the 4 points that night.
